With the addition of Wheeler and Ellerbe, and the fact we kept Starks and Soliai, we all expected to keep our rushing defense top notch. We ranked 13th last year in rushing defense. We got ran on 431 times letting them run for an average of 4 YPC and only let up 10 touchdowns. This year it didn’t look the same. Maybe it’s the fact that the opposing teams ran it 53 more times. We kept our YPC the same from last year to this year and gave up 4 more touchdowns. Yet, we ranked 24th in rushing defense in 2013. We did this while facing teams that do not necessarily run the ball that often. We can always expect the Jets and Bills to run a muck on us, yet comparing to last year when we played Houston, Oakland, Tennessee, Seattle, and San Francisco, and still put up good numbers compared to this year, where the stats are pretty similar, but faced less teams that like to run the ball tells me that our running defense took a step back this year. And I’m pretty sure we all saw that happen.

Our passing defense this year stacked in the middle of the pack. One stat to note down if the TD:INT ratio. Last year was 18 TDs to 10 INTs, while this year we were 17:18. Incredible. We had the same amount of sacks, even though we had more weapons on the defensive side of the ball. Our passer rating dipped down more than 6% from last year. All because we added on little warrior named Brent Grimes. Also, the stats could be because of the Kevin Coyle effect. We jumped from 27th in the league in passing defense to 16th. We did so without a starting CB in Dimitri Patterson for most of the year. So with our CBs being Grimes, Carroll, and Jimmy Wilson along with Jones and Clemons, we didn’t do so bad. We got passed on 580 times this year. Which is a drop from last year when teams passed on us 600 times.

Ok, so I know this is a lot of info to take in. All we have to know is Brandon Fields. That takes care of the punting aspect of Special Teams. Caleb Sturgis had a rookie year, but if he puts up numbers like this next year, well I hope he will be looking for another job. Marcus Thigpen is a dangerous kick and punt returner whenever he gets a chance. He also should get a chance to be the third down back on passing situations. He could be our Darren Sproles.

So from what I can see, teams ran the ball more on us than last year and passed less. Does this mean they saw our running defense as a weakness? Or that our 16th ranked passing defense was stout and they had no hopes of gaining anything on us. Grimes is a must sign, but will he stunt the growth of Taylor and Davis? What about Patterson and Carroll? I actually believe our defense has more questions than our offense.

Here’s something to remember and hopefully we can see this more next year:
