...Most diehard football fans love the process of draft evaluation as much as the real games. This is an exciting time of year for us football nerds. Lock us in our moms basement with some you-tube vids, some mock draft info, and NFL radio. And we can all play GM for a minute. What player, or players best fit our team. Which prospect will turn into a superstar. And did I identify him.
Now for teams it is much more serious then this. They actually get to do the real watching of game tape. They have access to real information, and most important. They are building a roster. As fun as it is for the fan. The process for NFL teams is long, it can be brutal.
Now to my point..Should the Phins be drafting for need(in the premium rounds 1-2) or should teams always take the BPA?
I think the idea a team can always take the best player available is nonsense. Because of free agency. Some teams can, some teams cannot. For instance. The Phins were very active in free agency last offseason. The FO had set themselves up to take the BPA(evidence by the trade up for Dion Jordan)...We do not know the prizes this free agency period will drop in our laps. We do not know what the roster will look like, nor do we know how our new GM has evaluated players on the roster now..My argument is that we will not be able to fill every void in free agency. Nor should we.
So..right now it is easy to say...Yeah..Always take the BPA. It is a no brainer. And if you sit behind a keyboard it makes this route even easier as none of suffer the consequences of being wrong. Only a bit of internet cred should we be right. And yes some teams may even follow this strategy. Will we draft for need, or do we try and find the best players?
