It appears the NFL may have its first openly gay player in 2014, if Missouri defensive end Michael Sam, the SEC co-Defensive Player of the Year, is selected in May's NFL Draft. Sam made his announcement last night, with many NFL players taking to Twitter to react to the story.
How did some of the Miami Dolphins players' react? We take a look.
Wow just saw the story on Michael Sam, courageous young man, Sec defensive player of the year, will be the first openly gay man in the NFL.— PAT SURTAIN (@psurtain23) February 10, 2014
I think the locker room will treat him like one of the guys. His collegiate teammates have known since August.— PAT SURTAIN (@psurtain23) February 10, 2014
As much as the outside thinks the locker room's this barbaric place, if Sams can play football the guys don't care & he's proven that he can— PAT SURTAIN (@psurtain23) February 10, 2014
I've never really understood the big deal about knowing someone's sexual preference. I don't care.— Brent Grimes (@BGrimey21) February 10, 2014
Unless your having or trying to have sex with somebody, I just feel like their sexual preference shouldn't really matter to you.— Brent Grimes (@BGrimey21) February 10, 2014
Realistically my "don't give a damn" attitude isn't everyone's, so there are some that this won't go over so well with.— Brent Grimes (@BGrimey21) February 10, 2014
Hats off to you Michael Sam, that takes some guts #respect— Jonathan A. Martin (@J_Martin71) February 10, 2014
Glad Michael Sam isn't afraid to be who he is... Gay, straight, black, white... It doesn't matter... If you can ball, you can ball...— A.J. Francis (@AJFrancis410) February 10, 2014
Much respect to Michael Sam for his courage! Best of luck in the NFL!— Jordan Kovacs (@JKovacs32) February 10, 2014
There was one strange moment, with Dolphins running back Mike Gillislee tweeting "WTF is this world coming to?" shortly after the Sam news broke. However, he deleted the tweet shortly thereafter and posted the following tweet, with him possibly winning the worst timing for an unrelated tweet ever:
Sorry if offended anyone my tweet was about something that's going on I'm my personal life!!!"let's clear the air"— mike gillislee (@mikescogilly) February 10, 2014
