Mike Sherman fired: Joe Philbin, Ryan Tannehill statements on coaching change

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Dolphins today announced the removal of offensive coordinator Mike Sherman from the team's coaching staff. Following the announcement, head coach Joe Philbin and quarterback Ryan Tannehill made statements on Sherman's departure.

Earlier today, the Miami Dolphins announced that offensive coordinator Mike Sherman had been relieved of his duties after two seasons with the franchise. Head coach Joe Philbin, who announced the departure, and quarterback Ryan Tannehill have both made statements with regards to Sherman's firing.

Philbin, who released his statement through the team, has worked with and for Sherman throughout most of his career. Philbin explained:

“I would like to thank Mike for his contributions to the Miami Dolphins. Mike has been a mentor to me throughout my coaching career, dating back to 1979. He is a man of great integrity, dedicated to his family, his team, his players and his profession. On behalf of the entire Miami Dolphins organization I want to wish Mike and his family the very best in the future.”

Tannehill's relationship with Sherman goes back six years, four with Sherman as Tannehill's head coach at Texas A&M and two with the Dolphins. In his statement, Tannehill said:

"Coach Sherman and I have a great relationship. He has made significant contributions to the Dolphin organization, and I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to play for him for the last six years. I learned so much about football and life in that time, and for that I am forever grateful. I will always respect Coach Sherman both as a coach and more importantly for the kind of man he is. I wish him and his family the best in whatever God has in store for him next."

The Dolphins had the 20th ranked pass offense and 26th ranked rush offense this year, as well as only scoring seven points in their final two games. A win in either of those games would have earned the team a playoff berth.
