G Danny Watkins, cut by Eagles, has tryout with Dolphins.— Howard Balzer (@HBalzer721) September 2, 2013
Watkins is a former fireman who was drafted at age 27 in the 1st round of the 2011 NFL draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. Watkins has struggled in his 1.5 seasons as an NFL starter, particularly at pass protection. He played so poorly in 2012 that he was benched midseason despite playing on an Eagles' offensive line that lacked depth. That being said, he had a decent 2013 preseason in which he was positively graded in 2 out of 3 preseason games by ProFootball Focus. He'd be unlikely to start on the Dolphins if he makes the team, but based on the beatings Pat Devlin and Matt Moore took in preseason, the team could use some upgrades on backup offensive line.
