Hall of Fame Game: Dolphins and Cowboys Connections

The Miami Dolphins travel north to Canton, Ohio to face the Dallas Cowboys in the NFL's annual Hall of Fame Game. Here's a look at some of the connections between the two franchises.

Football is back. Well, preseason football is back. Tomorrow night, the Miami Dolphins and Dallas Cowboys will face off in the NFL's annual Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. The Dolphins and Cowboys have had a very incestuous relationship in the past few years, with several Dolphins front office personnel, coaches, and players coming from the Cowboys. To get an idea of just how incestuous, we take a closer look at all of the connections between the two clubs.

Former Teams:

  • Cowboys wide receiver Anthony Armstrong has had two stints with the Dolphins. He originally joined Miami after two years in the Arena Football League, spending the 2008 season and 2009 preseason on Miami's practice squad. He spent the 2009 to 2011 seasons with the Washington Redskins before rejoining Miami last year for September and October. After he was released, the joined the Jacksonville Jaguars for two weeks before signing with the Cowboys.
  • Dolphins tight end coach Dan Campbell played for the Cowboys from 2003-2005
  • Cowboys offensive lineman Ryan Cook spent the 2011 season with the Dolphins, playing in seven games. He was traded to Dallas in August 2012 for a seventh round pick.
  • Cowboys wide receivers coach Derek Dooley was the Dolphins wide receivers coach from 2005-2006
  • Dolphins linebackers coach George Edwards was the Cowboys linebackers coach from 1998-2001
  • Dolphins Assistant General Manager Brian Gaine was the Cowboys' Assistant Director of Pro Scouting from 2005-2007
  • Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett played quarterback for the Dolphins in 2004 and was the team's quarterbacks coach from 2005-2006
  • Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland was the Cowboys' National Scout from 2001-2004 and the Vice President of College and Pro Scouting from 2005-2007
  • Dolphins quarterback Matt Moore was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Dallas Cowboys in 2007. He was waived in the final round of roster cuts, and was expected to be signed to the Dallas practice squad but was claimed off waivers by the Carolina Panthers.
  • Cowboys offensive lineman Jermey Parnell spent three weeks with the Dolphins in 2011, but did not appear in any games. After he was released by Miami, he was signed to the New Orleans Saints practice squad prior to being signed two weeks later to the Cowboys 53-man roster.
  • Dolphins defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers was the Cowboys' defensive tackles coach from 2003-2004 and the defensive line coach from 2005-2007
  • Cowboys tight end Dante Rosario spent the first two weeks of the 2011 season with the Dolphins, appearing in two games, before being released. He joined Dallas this year.

  • Dolphins offensive lineman Richie Incognito and Cowboys offensive lineman Demetress Bell were teammates with the Buffalo Bills in 2009
  • Dolphins offensive lineman Nate Garner played for the New York Jets in 2008 while Cowboys offensive coordinator Bill Callahan was the Jets Assistant Head Coach and offensive line coach
  • Dolphins offensive lineman Lance Louis and Cowboys tight end Andre Smith were teammates with the Chicago Bears in 2011
  • Dolphins wide receiver Marvin McNutt and Cowboys offensive lineman Demetress Bell were teammates with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2012
  • Dolphins defensive lineman Vaughn Martin and Cowboys tight end Dante Rosario were teammates with the San Diego Chargers in 2012
  • Dolphins cornerback Richard Marshall, Dolphind quarterback Matt Moore, Cowboys defensive tackle Nick Hayden, Cowboys tight end Dante Rosario, and Cowboys guard Mackenzy Bernadeau were all teammates with the Carolina Panthers (Hayden, Bernadeau: 2008-2010; Rosario 2007-2010)
  • Dolphins cornerback Dimitri Patterson and Cowboys linebacker Ernie Sims were teammates with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2010; Patterson and Cowboys cornerback Brandon Carr were teammates with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2008
  • Dolphins linebacker Jason Trusnik played for the Cleveland Browns in 2009-2010, while Cowboys linebackers coach Matt Eberflus held the same position for the Browns
  • Dolphins offensive lineman Lance Louis and fullback Evan Rodriguez played for the Chicago Bears in 2012 while Cowboys defensive line coach Rod Mairnelli was the Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator
  • Dolphins linebacker Philip Wheeler and Cowboys linebacker Ernie Sims were teammates with the Indianapolis Colts in 2011
