Dolphins present team awards on Tuesday

USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Dolphins presented several team awards on Tuesday, including the Dan Marino Most Valuable Player, Don Shula Leadership Award, and Nat Moore Community Service Award.

The Miami Dolphins announced several team awards yesterday, recognizing players for their play and off-field work during the 2012 season. The awards were headlined by defensive end Cameron Wake being presented the Dan Marino Most Valuable Player.

The award is voted upon by the South Florida media, and marks the first time Wake has been named the team's MVP. He started all 16 games in 2012 for Miami, recording 53 tackles and 15 sacks. He was selected to his second Pro Bowl last year, and was a First Team All Pro selection for the first time. Wake's 15 sacks were the fourth highest in the league last year, third in the AFC. The performance made him just the second player in team history to have multiple seasons with 14 or more sacks (Jason Taylor).

The Don Shula Leadership Award, as voted upon by the players, was presented as well yesterday, going to center Mike Pouncey. It was the first time Pouncey received the award. He has started all 32 games at center for the Dolphins since being selected in the first round in 2011.

The third award presented on Tuesday was the Nat Moore Community Service Award, which, for the second straight year, was presented to punter Brandon Fields. Last season, he shared the award with kicker Dan Carpenter, but won it outright this year. Selected by the Miami Dolphins Foundation, Fields' 2012 community service resume included participating in the highest number of events among any of the Dolphins' players, as well as working to coach the team's Punt, Pass, and Kick finalist on her punting technique. He also continued the work of the Brandon and Katie Fields Youth Fitness Fund, which was founded in 2010 and looks to promote physical activity and good health in children in the community.
