Dolphins could make tackle decision "very soon"

USA TODAY Sports

According to multiple reports, the Miami Dolphins could be closing in on a decision on signing, or trading for, an offensive tackle. Over the past few days, Miami has met with four different plays, and has not ruled out a trade with Kansas City. Thursday could bring an answer to the issue.

The Miami Dolphins have spent the last few days exploring their options at the offensive tackle position. The team has visited with free agent tackles Bryant McKinnie, Tyson Clabo, Winston Justice and Eric Winston, as well as not ruling out re-visiting the trade with the Kansas City Chiefs for franchise tagged left tackle Branden Albert.

Reports Wednesday indicate the team could be closing in on a decision, hoping to make it "very soon." The deal could comes as early as today.

Miami is trying to upgrade one side of the offensive line with the tackle they trade to get or sign in free agency, with second year tackle Jonathan Martin filling the other side. Most likely, the team will look to sign a right tackle, putting Martin on the left side, the position he played during his time at Stanford.

The tackle position has been the biggest need for the Dolphins this offseason following the loss of former Pro Bowl left tackle Jake Long, who signed with the St. Louis Rams in free agency. Miami had been thought to be close to trading for Albert just prior to the NFL Draft, but the deal never materialized, despite the Chiefs selecting tackle Eric Fisher with the first overall pick.
