Why Albert Now?

All of this Albert talk has gotten me thinking? Why would Miami start the talks this week about getting a LT when Martin is supposed to move there? Why not use a draft pick for a younger, cheaper OT that we can keep for years? Well these a re good questions.

My thought that was based on the fact that Kansas has a can't miss young prospect in Joekel or Fischer depending on whom you talk to. That means you effectively wasted a franchise tag on a player and you want to dump him. That puts Miami in the drivers seat maybe getting away with a second round pick for a franchise player. Not bad if you can work out a longer term contract and reduce that cap hit from the franchise tag? But why now?

I think it comes down to Martin didn't (or couldn't) do what he was supposed to do in the off season. Get stronger. With the players coming back into the facilities in Miami, I wonder if Philbin saw the guys, and saw that Martin didn't strengthen as he was expected to in the off season, so now Philbin is saying, you had your chance to earn your keep, you disappointed me, Jeff go get me a proven LT.

The draft is sometimes a crap shoot. You are drafting potential and sometimes you get it right and sometimes you don't. Is Albert worth the 54th pick in the draft? Maybe. Maybe not. But Ireland seems to think so.
