I'll try to keep this short and sweet. If you've been around the Phinsider for a while you might recognize me as an "anti-Irelander".
Ireland spoke with the media today about the draft. As usual, he made a few statements that might give insight into decisions he has made in the past and his thought process going into this draft.
These are the ones that drew my attention:
- Obviously he is just being silly about building an entire team of offensive lineman... But he comes off as being very defensive. This leads me to believe our 1st Round Pick will almost certainly be an offensive lineman.
- If he loved Jake Long so much, why didn't he marry him? Or maybe just re-sign him? It sounds like Ireland is defending 'safe' picks he made in the past. I doubt many Dolphins fans are excited about the 2008 #1 OVERALL PICK only staying with the team for 5 years... and then losing him without getting anything in return.
"I’ve been in a couple of drafts where there’s a guy sitting there and it’s not particularly, it’s not a need, it’s not a must, it’s not a want. He’s just not a position that I have in my radar. So sometimes you might not draft a player that you have a high grade on."
- Okay. This explains the busts. It has been well-publicized that Ireland drafts "horizontally" which is a nice way of saying "drafts for need" instead of taking the Best Player Available.
- Every time I read this line my head hurts a little more "you might not draft a player you have a high grade on." Clearly, this is how Ireland re-loads Miami's roster each year with mediocre talent. But at least he fills all the "needs, musts and wants."
Fire away Ireland-loyalists...
