The San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to a trade sending quarterback Alex Smith from San Francisco to Kansas City. The deal, which cannot be finalized until the new league year starts on March 12, will give the 49ers two draft picks in compensation.

According to the reports, the 49ers will receive the Chiefs 2013 second round pick, as well as a "similar" pick in 2014. That means the Chiefs are still on the clock with the first overall pick in this year's draft. The 49ers will now have 12 draft picks this year, including five in the first 93 selections.

Smith has two years remaining on his current contract. He is due a $1 million roster bonus on March 15, which explains why the 49ers have been so agressive in getting this deal in place. However, as some reporters are pointing out, it is not March 12 yet. Someone could, potentially, swoop in and make the 49ers an even better offer for Smith - however unlikely that is.
