NFL Free Agents 2013: Dolphins Top Target is Mike Wallace

Joe Sargent

The Miami Dolphins are expected to be major players in the free agent market this year, with the wide receiver position being their number one focus. According to a report, the Dolphins' top free agent target will be Pittsburgh Steelers wide out Mike Wallace.

By now, we all know the Miami Dolphins are going after play makers this offseason. We all expect them to add wide receivers through some combination of free agents and draft picks. The conventional wisdom so far this offseason has been that the Dolphins will go after Green Bay Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings. Jennings played for Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin when Philbin was the Green Bay offensive coordinator and the wide out has made overt overtures to the Dolphins and Philbin.

However, it now appears that Jennings may not be the Dolphins' top choice in free agency. According to Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun Sentinel, multiple sources around the Dolphins are saying that Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace will be the Dolphins' top free agent target this year.

Wallace is expected to net a $12 million per year contract. The Dolphins, who will have between $45 and $50 million in salary cap space next year, will have plenty of funding available to make an offer to Wallace. But, is he worth $12 million a season?

As Armando Salguero points out in his own article about Wallace, the Dolphins just paid Jake Long nearly $12 million for last season. Paying $12 million to a player who can actually put points on the board make sense when you look at it that way.

Finally, remember this is smokescreen season as well. The Dolphins could be floating this "rumor" from "sources" just to spin the talk toward Wallace while they are actually target someone else. In the end, we will just have to wait and see what happens.
