Dolphins to sign Michael Thomas from 49ers practice squad

Ed Szczepanski-US PRESSWIRE

The Miami Dolphins appear set to sign cornerback Michael Thomas from the San Francisco 49ers practice squad. Thomas is likely a replacement for R.J. Stanford on the roster, who was injured in this week's win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

During Sunday's 34-28 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Miami Dolphins saw reserve cornerback R.J. Stanford break his leg.  The injury will likely lead to the special teams player being placed on injured reserve, ending his 2013 season.

It now appears the Dolphins already have a replacement in their sights.  A league source has told SB Nation's Niners Nation that the Dolphins will sign cornerback Michael Thomas, poaching him from the San Francisco practice squad.  The signing could happen as early as tomorrow when the league office opens up after tonight's Week 14 concluding Monday Night Football game.

Thomas first joined the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2012, spending all of last year on the practice squad, then signing a reserve/futures contract after the year.  He entered training camp fighting for a nickel cornerback or safety position, but was released in final roster cuts and signed back to the practice squad.

Miami will likely look to Thomas, or one of the team's rookie cornerbacks Jamar Taylor or Will Davis, to fill in for Stanford on special teams coverage, as well as work into the rotation at cornerback if starter Dimitri Patterson's groin injury continues to bother him.
