The opening Miami drive started promising, with the team able to move the ball through the air. However, it stalled as it neared midfield, with a high 3rd-and-11 pass attempt from quarterback Ryan Tannehill dropping to the ground after going through the hands of tight end Charles Clay. Dolphins Pro Bowl punter Brandon Fields then shanked the kick on fourth down, only sending the ball 18 yards.
However, the Jets would go three-and-out and kick the ball back to Miami.
On their second possession, Miami again started moving the ball down the field. However, the drive would again stall, despite a successful challenge from Joe Philbin to give Miami a first down on what was called 4th-and-1. This time, Miami would punt from their own 49-yard line. Jimmy Wilson was able to nearly down the ball inside the five-yard line, but it instead bounced into the end zone for the touchback.
New York would start to drive back down the field, but would also stall out. A punt from New York set up Miami from their own 11-yard line.
On first down, Tannehill connected with Brian Hartline for 25-yards, which sent Hartline over the 1,000 yard mark for the second consecutive season. However, he would leave the game after the play with a knee injury. The Dolphins are currently driving the ball as the quarter ends, with possession at the New York 41.
