The Miami Dolphins have claimed former Cleveland Browns cornerback Chris Owens off waivers today.  The move adds a veteran cornerback to the roster in a week with starting corners Brent Grimes and Nolan Carroll both injured.  To make space, the Dolphins waived cornerback Justin Rodgers.

Owens was originally a third round pick of the Atlanta Falcons in 2009 out of San Jose State.  In four seasons with the Falcons, Owens appeared in 58-games, starting 12.  He recorded one sack, three interceptions, 14-passes defensed, and 110-tackles. He joined the Browns this year, playing in 12-games with three starts.  He recorded 2.5 sacks, three passes defensed, and 51 tackles before a knee injury landed him on injured reserve.  After reaching an injury settlement this week, the Browns waived Owens, allowing the Dolphins to claim him.

The Dolphins signed Rodgers last week, along with claiming defensive back Michael Thomas.  However, Rodgers was inactive for the team's game against the Patriots.

During Wednesday's practice, Grimes was a non-participant while Carroll was limited, as was rookie Jamar Taylor.  The only other true cornerback on the roster is rookie Will Davis.  Miami uses safety Jimmy Wilson as their nickel cornerback, though he moved to boundary corner on Sunday against the Patriots with the Carroll and Grimes injuries.  Davis was on the other side, while the team used Thomas as the nickel corner, five days after he joined the roster.

The Dolphins face the Buffalo Bills this week in upstate New York.
