The end of the Carolina game was full of mistakes. I'd like to take a post to focus on the time management by Coach Philbin. With Carolina picking up a first down in field goal range (due to a flop by Cam Newton) at our 30ish yard line. 1:40 and ticking on the clock.
Conventional wisdom by the NFL is to get the field goal secured without risking the sack. So Carolina runs some play that gains 2 yards. Now 2nd and 8 with the clock running...until we take our first of 3 timeouts. I am not as upset with this one, since we realistically could hold them and force a tying field goal and get the ball back with 1:20ish on the clock for a winning drive.
So now 2nd and 8 and Carolina runs the same strech (with pulling center and guard) to the left that has gashed us late in the game and gets 6 yards. Now 3rd and 2 at our 22 yard line and the clock is runn...nope, we call timeout #2. Carolina has given every indcation they will settle for the field goal with the clock at around 1:10, until we decide to stop it for them two times now inside of 2 minutes. We have been gashed all game on the ground at this point, expecting to stop them would not be wise here. Instead let them run the clock down to 40 seconds or so and run whatever play they want (probably a run) and then they now are in a rush.
We all know how the game turned out (and this was simply one mistake of many in the 3-4th quarters), but it is an example of how we seem to make critical errors late in the game.
