The Miami Dolphins have made a roster move today, promoting practice squad safety D.J. Campbell to the active roster.  To make room, the team waived safety Jordan Kovacs.

Campbell was originally a seventh round draft pick by the Carolina Panthers in 2012.  He appeared in five games last season, with four starts, recording 12 tackles and a pass defense.  He came into training cap this year looking to fight for the starting strong safety spot in the Panthers' defense, but lost the job to Mike Mitchell, then suffered a leg injury.  He was waived/injured by the Panthers at the end of the preseason, then, once he was automatically placed on injured reserve when no team claimed him, the Panthers reached an injury settlement and released Campbell on September 9.

A month later, the Dolphins added Campbell to the practice squad as a replacement for Kovacs, who had been promoted to the active roster.  Kovacs had appeared in four games for Miami, all as a special teams player.  Campbell will likely fill that role tonight against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Dolphins will probably try to re-sign Kovacs to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Kickoff tonight for the Dolphins and the Buccaneers is at 8:40pm ET.
