Peyton Manning passes Dan Marino on all time passing yardage list

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

The Denver Broncos are on a blistering pace this season, throwing the ball all over the place. With his 411 yards passing yesterday, Peyton Manning passed Dan Marino for second on the all time passing yardage list.

Last night, we took a look at the 506 yard passing performance from Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, just the 15th time in league history someone has accomplished that feat. However, there was another milestone reached in that game, and again, it ties to Miami Dolphins Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino.

Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning threw for 411 yards as he led the Broncos to the win over the Cowboys. Those 411 yards gives Manning 61,371 career passing yards, or 10 more yards than Dan Marino threw in his career (61,361). That moves Manning into second place all time in career passing yards.

Marino retired as the NFL's all time passing yardage record holder in 1999. He was passed by Brett Favre in 2007. Favre retired in 2010 with 71,838 yards.

Manning needs 10,467 yards to catch Favre. If he stays on his current pace for this season, Manning will finish the year with 5,444 yards, or 3,974 more yards than he has right now. He would need two seasons, averaging 3,247 yards to pass Favre.

Manning is also on pace to break the single season touchdown pass record this season; he has 16 through five games. If he averages three touchdown passes per game the rest of the season, he will reach the 50 TD pass record currently held by Tom Brady. Marino held that record at 48 until 2004, when Manning passed him with 49. Brady claimed the record in 2007.
