Jets Coaching Rumors: Looking at Cam Cameron?

Mitch Stringer-US PRESSWIRE

The New York Jets fired their offensive coordinator and former Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano this week. Now, it appears that the Jets are looking to continue their trek through former Dolphins head coaches, with Cam Cameron one of the leading candidates for the position.

The New York Jets are on the hunt for a new offensive coordinator after firing Tony Sparano less than a year after hiring him. Sparano, formerly the Miami Dolphins head coach from 2008-2011, was brought to the Jets with hopes that his "ground-and-pound" mentality would mesh with head coach Rex Ryan's philosophy, and that the Jets would climb out of the offensive stall from Brian Schottenheimer's offense in 2011.

The Jets ended the season 30th in total offense and 28th in scoring offense, leading to Sparano's firing and the team looking for their third offensive coordinator in three seasons.

Now, it appears, the Jets are ready to follow the Miami head coaching tree back another branch. Before Sparano, Cam Cameron coached the Dolphins to a miserable 1-15 season, his only season as a head coach. He was fired, eventually landing as the Baltimore Ravens' offensive coordinator. He was with the Ravens from 2008 until Week 14 of this season when, despite the team winning games, he was fired.

Cameron appears to be one of the leading candidates for the Jets' vacancy. There is no word from Cameron if he would be interested in the position.

If Cameron is not interested, the team could also be looking at former San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner. Turner is also a former Dolphins coach, having been the team's offensive coordinator for two seasons (2002-2003) under Dave Wannstedt (who, coincidentally, is also looking for a job after being fired by the Buffalo Bills this year).

While the Jets are searching for their next offensive coordinator, it looks like they are not looking any further than the Dolphins' list of former coaches. We will see how well that turns out.
