Some team surprises, jumps up and contends. Every Year a rookie makes a splash, a veteran has a stellar year, a third year guy breaks out and carries a team, and every year for the past 10 I have looked for it be the Dolphins. We are basically all new, with new coaches, players, schemes, etc, but there is a new feel, I cannot put my finger on it but I feel it. It is not the same old outlook, it feels different.
I watched Hard Knocks because I wanted to get feel of what kind of man Philbin was and what kind of people did he surround himself with. What was his integrity level, how strict were they going to be, and how would they handle situations that arose. I liked what I saw, they have a plan and they are sticking to it, I can say this about the coaching staff. They are working, teaching, searching, implementing new Offenses and Defenses and its a slow process to do that.
What I also like is they are not afraid to take chances and make the tough call. Chad, Vontae, Ryan T, come to mind. They needed a WR and Chad's acts and demeanor got to a point where enough is enough, Vontae was just participating, not prepared and they made the tough choice to part ways and get what they could, Ryan T proved he might be something special and the decision is to play him so he can get experience, it was not like we were going to the Superbowl and have enough to win today so why the hell not, we have an Oine that I think can protect him and if he continues to get the ball out quickly he may be this years rookie that makes that splash I talked about.
I do believe if Ryan can throw that we will be able to run and Reggie Bush appears to me be on a mission and the other running backs look strong. What will make the Offense successful is not the WR or the RB or the QB but the Olines ability to open holes and protect which I think they will.
Finally the Defense. they were like sieves the first three games but looked much better this last game. I think that going from a 3-4 to a 4-3 is wreaking a little havoc on their reads and performance and will take some time to gel, defense is about all 11 being on the same page where on Offense one person can make a difference, our guys are not comfortable yet but the last game they sure did show signs that it may be clicking.
So what do I want this year, I want to be that Cincinnati team of last year or Denver or the many other teams that jumped up and was on ESPN or the headline of the sports section, is it hope, I think its a little more than that, I think it is more of optimism in what I see and watch, as we approach our first game that counts this year I will watch with the anticipation and the excitement that we are that team that makes the splash this year.
Good Luck Dolphins
