Thinking back to when I was a kid… I remember never hearing much about Owners or General Managers. There were two sets of people that mattered… the Coaches and the Players. In my mind, this is how a team functioned:
The Owner (Ross): Signed the pay checks and made money.
The General Manager (Ireland): Worked in Human Resources, worked out contracts, and played kissy kissy with prospects.
The Coach (Philbin): Ran the whole damn team, made player decisions, picked who they wanted and didn’t want, busted balls, and told the GM where he could stick his “scotch on the rocks.”
The Players: I’ll just say this… I remember a team being a team for a long time. The same guys playing together year after year. They all had a groove… they meshed… they scored. There was trust.
Ross and Ireland: Put your hands back in your pockets and jiggle your change. Let the damn coach run and build the team.
