The Bengals D plays a lot of 4-3 2 press man under. This means that our base D is a 4 man front with 3 LBers. We rush four and put all of the LBers and CBs in man coverage. The safeties then split the deep part of the field. We have been getting beat deep, which is a product of having bad safeties. This week we blitzed Jones a lot, which makes no sense in our D. We blitzed Jones to keep him out of coverage, because of how badly he got beat last week. Jones took bad angle after bad angle and failed to help our corners. So, we blitzed Jones and told Clemons to cover the entire deep part of the field.
Oakland recognized this and took advantage of our playing tight on their WRs with only 1 S deep. The major problem with this is that any mistake Clemons makes is now exponentially greater. You could see that Clemons was back the alone on some of the deep passes and simply wasn’t in position. We need to replace Wilson for Jones as soon as Marshall is healed, because the Bengals D needs two Ss proficient in pass coverage.
Jones showed promise that he could do something in OTAS, but even then he was getting beat often. Jones' problem is making a play when the ball is in the air. Before the throw of the ball, he is in perfect position to make a play. He underestimates the throw and takes too shallow of an angle. This puts him out of the play and puts all the stress of keeping the WR from the endzone on the CB (who is supposed to go for the ball) and the backside S.
