Many of our WRs have been dropping balls this preseason, as has been pointed out by many. This was disconcerting because players like Moore, Gates and Wallace are players known for sure hands, yet they have been dropping balls. I was watching the game and something came readily to mind as I was watching it. Many time Tannehill will have already have thrown the ball before the WR breaks and the ball is already there when the WR looks for the ball. This is probably the system Philbin has placed and it can work very well. The problem with this is that it requires pinpoint precision on part of the QB. When Tannehill throws it behind, above or at the WR's feet; the WR has no time to react to this. This can be seen on the drops that the first team has had.
I don't know if Tannehill simply can't make that type of timing throw, the game hasn't slowed down enough for him to make those throws, or if he is adjusting his aim to the coverage. If he is adjusting his throw, he needs to hold the ball a half second longer so the WR will be able to adjust to the throw. If he is becoming anxious because of the pass rush, he needs to get to the point where he will not throw the ball until he is ready to throw it, or throw it to the hot read.
This problem is on that Trent Edwards had. He would go through his reads too quickly and would miss WRs that got open down field as a result. Edwards would also throw it at the soonest possible time. Hopefully Tannehill can learn these nuances and we don't have that problem with him.
