So I pretty much had to see for myself how good/bad John Jerry was vs a solid defense line like the Falcons. Lets just say I now understand why Jim Turner said on Hard Knocks "if he was 330 he'd be an All Pro".
I literally watched every offensive snap for the first 2 1/2 quarters with my sole focus on Jerry and he will 100% be our starting RG. Regardless of what that moron Omar Kelly says of him being cut, he will start for us week 1 vs Houston. He routinely kept his head on a swivel and always picked up a man or helped double in pass protection. He did not give up a snack and I counted 1 qb pressure that Atl had on an all out blitz that I believe the whole O-line was on a different page forcing Tannehill to throw the ball away. Also, unlike Jonathan Martin does at times, Jerry rarely even gets pushed back and shows very good strength at the point of attack.
In run protection, I would say he is at least average to pretty good. Regardless of his weight, he was able to get to the second level several teams and a majority of Daniel Thomas's nice runs were a result of Jerry being able to turn his guy giving DT a nice lane. I truly do believe if he is able to lose just 15 lbs, and get to 340 (I believe I read somewhere he is around 356 right now) he would be just that much lighter on his feet and help him more in the run game. But keep in mind, he helped Jonathan Martin out a lot reading the pressure on pass plays on lending a hand when he could. He displayed good ability of pushing one guy and helping pouncey and then sliding over to Martin.
I like what I see from him a lot, and I know if he can just lose a little bit of weight he's going to be very solid for us. We all remember last year when he was forced into action vs the Raiders and one other team he did a pretty good job, and I expect he'll only keep getting better. We have a very young promising line with Jerry, Martin, Pouncey and of course Long and Incognito. If I'm Jim Turner, I'd do exactly what he has been doing and let those 5 continue to gell and play together. The line was much better than it was last week and the only difference was Artis Hicks wasn't in there tripping Martin and being a liability.
Lets just say I'm happy Jeff Ireland and Joe Philbin don't take the advice of the idiotic Omar Kelly who was basically asking for Jerry's head on a plate. This guy can play and he's still very young. He was being moved from Guard to Tackle to Guard through his first few years and he needs to be allowed to just settle in one spot and develop, like he is now.
