Whether Ireland likes it or not, his time may soon be up and there will be nothing that can be done to rationalize the situation. First, lets just put aside the fact his recent moves lead to protest by the fans this offseason; which made it clear as the Miami blue offshore waters that he is not well liked here in South Florida.
After the draft this coming month, Ireland may be doomed depending upon a couple of factors:
1. If he takes Tannehill and he does not pan out to be a franchise QB...Ireland is gone
2. If he does not take Tannehill and he turns out to be a solid NFL quarterback...Ireland is gone
3. If Ireland passes on taking a QB all together and Miami faces another debacle of a season....Ireland should be gone, but Ross will probably back him once again for some unjust reason
Either way you put it, Ireland's job really rests in the fate of Tannehill. If he takes him and he fizzles out like a Chad Henne or Pat White, Miami fans will be outraged about another lost QB project and years down the drain. If he does not take Tannehill and he turns out to be a starting NFL quarterback, Miami fans will be outraged he passed on a franchise QB.
Now the only way Ireland can be bailed out of this situation is if another team steps up and trades Minnesota the house for the pick and takes him because that is asking a lot for a GM to trade the future of a franchise based off of 19 games played at the college level and Ireland would, IMO, get a pass for not dealing for him. But say a team jumps us, takes Tannehill for a relatively just asking price and he turns out to be a solid starter....Ireland is gone.
Although, when I say gone, it probably will not be immediately (unless Tannehill tears it up his first year for another team) because most scouts predict his inexperience at the college level will lead to the team drafting him having him develop on the side line for a year or two. So if Miami takes him, it will buy Ireland a couple more years since he will be his latest project. But as I see it, there are too many mines for Ireland to navigate through and ultimately, IMO, the Tannehill situation will lead to his eventual, but justified demise.
