A Different Approach to the Draft

Most of us can agree that our number one need is a franchise quarterback. Sadly, it is just not happening this season. Even if we drafted Tannehill absolutely no one think he will be ready to play for years.

In any event, I've made clear in various threads, I am not sold on Tannehill as a potential franchise quarterback, even far in the future. I think he is a bad gamble, being high-risk and medium-(at best) reward. And as any gambler will tell you, you should rarely make high-risk gambles and if you do, there absolutely have to be high potential rewards. Almost any scout will tell you that Tannehill is not a skys-the-limit prospect.

There is only one low-risk high-reward QB in the draft, and that is Luck. We ain't getting him. I would characterize Griffin as medium-risk, high-reward.

So there seem to be three popular options for the Dolphins in round one:

1. Draft Tannehill. As noted, I hate this option.

2. Pick a lower-risk, higher-reward impact player at another position, like Ingram or a receiver.

3. Trade down and pick up extra picks, possibly pick up a different developmental quarterback at a more appropriate place in the draft.

But there is a fourth option that I haven't heard anyone discuss and I think it has a lot going for it..

4. Trade our #8 pick in this years draft for two first round picks in next years draft.

Possibly to St. Louis (for theirs and Washington's), or work out a three-team trade (i.e. our #8 to some team, their 1st and 2nd this year to the Rams, the Rams two 1sts next year to us or some variation).

This would leave us with no first round pick in this year's draft, but three in next year's. That would give us plenty of ammunition to move up as far as we had to in order to get the best quarterback available in next year's draft. A player guaranteed to be a much better prospect than Ryan Tannehill.

This team says it wants to rebuild by the draft. Well, that cannot be done in one year anyway, so why not be smart and prepare for the future?

Being a little worse this year (than if we took an non-qb at #8, if we took Tannehill, it will make no difference this year anyway) is very much worth it if we can truly get a franchise signal caller next year.

It's a bold move, but I tell you, my opinion of Jeff Ireland would greatly improved if he pulled a move like this.
