You want to know what I’d do if I was The Dolphins GM right now? It’s the same thing I would have done last year. And the year before that actually.
Are you sure you're ready for this?
I would draft a QB in the first round (Tannehall? Fine, whoever) and then I’d draft a QB in the second round. And then I’d draft one in the sixth round.
As pained as the pundits are to admit it, NOBODY knows whether a college quarterback will make it in the NFL. And if you stop for a second and think about it, it’s really not hard to understand why.
Remember how nervous you were, fresh out of college or high school and on your first day at a ‘real’ job? Remember how terrified you were of screwing up? Now imagine that day with millions of people watching your every move. Imagine that day with cameras following you around and people asking you about every tiny misstep you make…
…that’s NFL quarterbacking. The difference between the two of course is that if you screw up in an office, your colleagues will just poke a little fun at you for being ‘the new guy’. In the NFL you’ll be booed, ridiculed and fired. Your dreams will be crushed and perhaps worst of all, everyone you know will see it all happen, detail by painstaking detail.
I think that mentally , starting out as an NFL QB is perhaps the hardest job there is. These guys don’t fail as athletes, they don’t ‘lose a step’ over a summer and it has nothing whatsoever to do with the difference in system between college and the NFL. They fail because they can’t handle the pressure. And who can blame them??
And that’s why you draft QBs like crazy while everybody laughs at you. That’s why you ignore the fans and the media and you keep on drafting 1, 2 and 6 until you find your guy. Because once you do, you will have a decade of drafts and free-agency periods with which to build a team around him.
One day a GM will have the guts to do this. Initially the fans will hate him and the media will deride him. And then he’ll find his guy and he’ll build a dynasty. I hope for all of our sakes, it’s a Dolphins GM.
P.s. Just in case you’re interested (and can’t be bothered to do the research!):
