I'm not going to defend Jeff Ireland or say that he is a great GM. I'd probably describe him as OK or competent at best. He's definitely not parade worthy. Unless, they have some sort of parade that celebrates mediocrity. If that's the case, sign me up! I could half heartedly wave from my beige float while tossing semi-sweet candy at underenthused children. Sorry, back to Jeff Ireland. He hasn't been our worst GM ever either. Remember when we traded for Lamar Gordon? Good times. He probably isn't even the worst GM in football. I can't believe AJ Smith still has a job. How do you fire a coach after a 14-2 season? Anyway...
None of that really matters. It doesn't matter if you think Ireland farts rainbows or eats baby seals for breakfast, lunch and then has a sensible dinner. It doesn't really make a difference what your opinion of our GM is. He's our GM. The team had its chance to fire him and they didn't. I'm sure Stephen Ross heard about the fire Ireland banner. He heard the grumblings from his ivory tower. He heard about Dez Bryant-gate. He decided to keep Jeff anyway. That brings me to my point.
Ireland is here to stay (at least for this year). What's the point of firing him now? Is that going to help? How do you replace him? Sure, you could get a potato, put some tooth picks in it for arms and legs, draw a funny face on it and tape a sign to one of the toothpicks that says, "Is your mom a prostitute?". But, how long does a potato really keep before it starts growing those gross spud things. Plus, it's not really fair to Joe Philbin to have to do press conferences and meetings with a potato.
In all seriousness, it would do more harm than good to fire Ireland now. Not to mention, it would make our organization look in even more disarray. So, I'm asking people to shelve their protest signs, cross the picket lines and keep your fingers crossed for a good season.
If that doesn't happen by October... then let's get the pitchforks and torches.
