If the Dolphins are not in rebuilding mode then they should be. Here are some of my thoughts:
- QB situation - Currently we have Matt Moore and Pat Devlin on the roster. I actually like Matt Moore but I understand what he is. He is an average QB in this league. I have seen enough of him in Miami and Carolina to understand that he is capable of winning but reality is he is capable of winning 7-8 games with the right team. He would be an excellent backup. There are 2 options out there for the Dolphins now. Matt Flynn and Ryan Tannehill are both QBs that I believe that you can build a team around. I think Matt Flynn has the confidence and moxie that you look for in a QB. Will he ever be Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady? Maybe not but for the right price I believe you can land a smart QB with a ton of potential. Ryan Tannehill is a project with extreme upside. He is very mobile, has a strong arm and has shown great promise at the position in limited experience. One thing that Flynn and Tannehill will need is time to mature into a starter in the NFL. No one wants to hear this but we are not a SuperBowl contender this year or next. Let's land one of these QBs or both. It seems that Flynn is now going to come at a much cheaper price than initally thought. I think regardless of whether we sign Flynn or not we should still think about Tannehill at the 8th pick in the draft. You can never have enough talent at the QB position.
- Coach - I love the hiring of Philbin. He brings a style of offense that I am excited to see here. Do we have all the weapons that we need to run his offense? No we do not. This is not Philbin's fault. He will need a year or two to develop this offense. We will need to be patient. Look at our offense. We have the worst WR core in the league at this point (except for maybe the Browns). We have a mediocre TE in Fasano. We have depth at RB but I believe in this offense you need to have multiple weapons at WR and TE to make it work. Even if we draft a WR it typically takes 3 years for them to develop. Our offense will struggle next year but hopefully this season we will find out what we have in Clay and Gates. All I ask is that we give Philbin time.
- Free Agency - This is a very weak free agent class. Yes there were some big names out there but we did not have the cap room to be players. This will limit the moves that the front office can make. Let's see if we can land Flynn. If we land Flynn we will not be able to make huge moves in free agency. We will be looking to land more role players. If we can't land Flynn then we need to make a move on Mario Manningham.
- The draft - We have too many major holes to fill them all in the draft. We need a QB, 2 WRs, a seam threat at TE, RT, RG, a pass rushing end, a middle linebacker (I see Dansby and Burnett as outside) and a safety or corner depending on how they want to use Marshall.
To summarize my thoughts I see too many holes with a new coaching staff in place. They will be looking to install new offensive and defensive schemes that I am not sure that we have the personnel in place for. Let's be smart and see how the pieces fall over the next 45 days but I have a feeling we are in rebuilding mode. The worst part is we are still a 6-7 win team. We will be in the same position next year.
