Jeff Ireland critics aren't going to like to hear this, BUT it appears the Dolphins GM's thrifty ways in 2011 will pay off in 2012. The Dolphins were $9 million under the salary cap in 2011 and NFL teams can carry that figure over to what the 2012 cap will be. That means if the salary cap is $123 million the Dolphins are working with a budget of $131 million. So....Since the Dolphins have a cap figure of $116.636 million they should have $14.364 million to work with right now.

Ireland can possibly move the Dolphins into the realm of $18-$20 million in free cap space. Good News!!!

Restructure and extend Long & YB would save

A few million as well.

I don't see them restructuring YB contract, unless YB takes a SERIOUS paycut

When Ireland drafted Jones it was because he would one day replace YB at the SS position, I think that one day has come. Bummer because I really like YB and his leadership skills will be sorely missed.

but unless they get someone in FA I think they will resign YB like they did with VC last year.

Great point.

If you remember back to the Cowboys vs. Pats game in Week 6 at Gillette, The Cowboys had the Patriots dead in the water. Rob Ryan was running coverage scheme all day and getting pressure with the base 3-4 front (as well stopping the run) because the Patriots couldn’t match up against Kenyon Coleman, Jay Ratliff and Marcus Spears inside, nor with the exterior rush due to their injuries.

What ended up losing the Cowboys the game though was that they likewise couldnt match up with the Pats Tight Ends. On the last drive, the Cowboys continued to double Gronk with bracket coverage ad chip techniques as well as come down on Welker in press and in-out coverage. But, they had to match up in man on Hernandez and they couldn’t do it. They tried Brooking at the beginning of the drive, they couldn’t use their safeties because of their other coverages and tried to switch to Orlando Scandrick as the Pats crossed midfield.

No answer and the Pats ended up scoring the game winning touchdown with :27 seconds left. They lost a game they should of won because they couldn’t match up in man when they had to on Hernandez.

Our personnel needs to be more compatible with the Patriots.

Considering it has been widely reported that Ross put the stop on the Orton trade and contract, how does Ireland get the credit for that decision?
He (Ross) wants his football people to find a quarterback that can compete either immediately or eventually on the same level as the NFL’s elite quarterbacks.

Ross is apparently so committed to doing this that the source confirmed it was the owner himself who told Jeff Ireland to shut down the attempt to add Kyle Orton in the summer when the general manager was still trying to trade for the Denver quarterback.

Can't stop hating on Ireland can you?

Go re-read what Omar said. Now tell where he says the name Orton. It isn’t there. You’re acting like Ireland’s only job last offseason was to sign Orton and Ross stopped him so Ross gets all the credit and Ireland did nothing.
Did Ireland go sign a top name RB (Like many wanted him to do)? No he worked a trade for a former Heisman winner (beats the hell out of trading an entire draft for one) that cost us a 6th round swap and a special teamer.
Did Ireland Re-Sign Ronnie Brown for big $$? No, he let him go and replaced him with a RB that had a future in Miami.
Now, he also didn’t sign any of the big name TEs which saved us money but didn’t upgrade the team.
All of these have one thing in common, Ireland saved money against the cap which can now be used for 2012. This is the point Omar made. Did you somehow miss that or did you not read past

Where do you think the $9M amount came from? It came from not trading for Orton. That was Ross' decision.

That’s all I’m saying. If that trade goes through, there is no $9M that can be added to this years cap.

As far as Armando being the guy who wrote the article, like it or not, he is one of the guys who has the most contacts within the Miami organization.

Has anyone from the Dolphins denied this report? It was picked up and reported by NFL.com, ESPN, CBSSports, etc. If it was so wrong, then why no denial?

Where do you think the $9M amount came from? It came from not trading for Orton. That was Ross’ decision.

The $9 million came from not overpaying for talent at all the positions. How about DeAngelo Williams? Many wanted us to sign him but he cost Carolina more against the cap from his signing bonus alone ($3.2 million) than Reggie Bush cost us all together. As for Orton, one of the things holding up the deal was the new deal Orton would need and what it would entail. This occurred before Ross pulled the plug. Just because Ross said no to 1 deal, he gets the credit for the $9 million? Ireland didn’t burn the $9 million when he could so he deserves credit there.
The 9 mil also comes from not signing Soliai to a long term deal. Is this a positive or a negative? That’s up to the individual but the point is that Ireland had several ways of burning that $9 million besides the Orton deal and to disregard them simply because Ross pulled the plug on one deal is absurd.
I know you aren’t talking to me but I don’t think your argument is invalidated by using an Armando quote. I think Armando is wrong as often as he is right (Likely more often) but I have no reason to disbelieve the story. I do however, think that if Ireland was so gung ho that it took Ross saying no to kill the deal, Orton would have been signed before Ross got around to saying no.

I think one of the reasons that the Dolphins didn't pursue some of the higher priced talent, like DeAngelo Williams, was because most of the available cap room was to be allocated to the QB position.

That’s just my opinion.

I also think the hold up on the trade for Orton was Orton’s salary not the draft picks or players in the trade.

At some point soon, the Dolphins are going to have to pay a QB NFL starter money, and that is in the $9M – $12M range. That is what Flynn is going to get (minimum). That is what Manning is going to get (minimum). If the Phins want to have an elite QB, those numbers climb to the $14M-$16M range.

The fact that the Dolphins, whether it was Ireland’s or Ross’ decision (I think it was Ross’ decision), not to pay Orton that amount (his cap hit last year was $8.88M) proves that they probably made the right choice.

I am going to partially agree with Ct here Finreaper.

If you look at the sequence of transactions it is readily apparant that this FO was allocating cap space for a move at Quarterback.

However I disagree with his second point. No matter my feelings on Henne, or yours, or anyone elses, the fact is that this management (and coaching staff) did not have faith in his abilities. They showed it over and over and over again. If an organization has misgivings about their Quarterback, and don’t believe in him, they are obligated to make a move. That this management did not is as poignant and powerful an indictment as any. That Ireland allowed the team to enter the season with out having dealt with a problem he knew existed, and with a player he did not have faith in, is letting your team down as a General Manager and harming it’s ability to win games.

If Ross intervened (as many believe he did and has been reported) and restricted Ireland from making a move he knew had to be made, whatever move at Quarterback that was, Orton or otherwise than Ireland should have resigned IMO.

On second thought Miami could possibly be sitting at around $28 million in free cap space!

As of now he are somewhere around $15 million if you play the cards right-

Cut YB- add $4 million
Restructure Long, Stark, Fasano deals- add $4 million (conservative number)
Cut some back-ups – add $2 million
Borrow against next years cap – add $3 million

that’s 15+4+4+2+3= 28

take out 5 for rookie salaries leaves you at 23, possibly take out another 3 this year for new Wake contract (I know a lot would say that this is too low but they can load his contract up on the back end) this leaves you at 20 million. Now if we do get Peyton expect him to come in around 10 million, so that would leave us about 10 million to spend on other free agents.
