2012 NFL Mock Draft from National Football Post

Ryan Tannehill to the Dolphins at the ninth overall pick. Too high?

National Football Post released their third 2012 NFL Mock Draft on Wednesday, with some surprising picks included in it. Andrew Luck still goes first to the Indianapolis Colts, the St. Louis Rams take Matt Kalil second, the Minnesota Vikings select Justin Blackmon, and Robert Griffin III heads to the Cleveland Browns.

But, it's the Miami Dolphins' pick at the ninth overall spot that is surprising.

Star-divide

9. Miami Dolphins: Texas A&M QB Ryan Tannehill
The Dolphins have received pretty average quarterback play over the past couple seasons and adding a talent like Tannehill who has the skill set to mature into a franchise QB could be too good to pass up at nine.

What do you think of the pick? Would the Dolphins take Tannehill that high? Is it too much of a reach?

tannehill

If they don’t sign Manning (I hope not) or Flynn (I hope so) or trade up for Griffin (too expensive) and they feel Tannehill is the guy then they HAVE to take him here. If not I guarantee at least another year of no franchise QB. Next year the chant will be Bark for Barkley

by FWE on Feb 18, 2012 11:21 AM EST reply actions

Ugh, I don't understand peoples rational

that RG3 will be too expensive to trade up to but Barkley is a possibility next year. Barkley will be the #1 pick next year unless he has a major injury or completely fails (in which case we wouldn’t want him). Not to mention the Dolphins are highly unlikely to be drafting in the top 10-15. Barkley will cost almost double next year what we can get RG3 for this year.

We need a franchise QB. Bottom line.

Dont care how they do it as long as they do it. i think of it like this….. we have an inside scoop on 2 possible qbs. Flynn and Tannehill. Philbin knows Flynn so if hes franchise qb material, Philbin will know. same thing with Tannehill. Sherman has worked with him for a few years and he will be giving Philbin some inside info on him. so if we acquire either of these guys, however we do it, im fine with that. If that means we take Tannehill at 9 then so be it. the pick is never to high if it works out.

it will be telling if neither is a phin, which is why fans should chill. Our coaches are in the best position to say no or yes to these 2 qb’s, we should trust them.

I would like to see us draft Tannehill

and sign Peyton Manning. If Barkley and Jones were in this draft, Tannehill would have prolly made it to the third round and would have been the steal of the draft. With them gone now he’s getting top ten recognition… I do believe that Tannehill will be a franchise quarterback, but he does have some things that need to be worked on first. He’s very raw still. Picking him up and then signing Manning is the best thing for our franchise because it gives us the best chance at a super bowl now as well as in the future.

And on that note

I also believe that 9 is too high to pick him up UNLESS they think they won’t be able to move up from the second round back into the late first round to pick him up or they think he’ll already be gone by the second. I’d like to pick him up in the first regardless just so we can say we drafted a qb in the first round for the first time since Marino, even if it was a bit of a reach. QB’s in the second round never pan out for us.

think about how crazy that sounds. Normally talent wise hes a 3rd round qb, but because one qb chose to stay in school, hes a top 10 pick? Hahaha, Thats crazy talk.

Personally, I'm not sure Tannehill is a top 10 pick

However, I think most Dolphins fans agree on 3 things.

1. The Dolphins need a longterm plan for the QB position.
2. The current regime will be defined by their choice at QB.
3. If they pick a QB in the top 10 (RG 3 via tradeup or Tannehill where we are now) in the draft, thereby bypassing likely future All-Pros at other positions, the current regime’s fate is tied to the fate of the QB.

If after looking at all the QB options via free agency and the draft, the staff is convinced Tannehill is the man, then I have no problems with them taking him way higher than most expect. Our coaching staff is familiar with Tannehill, and I would not want to risk losing him just to get a late second round pick via tradedown (I remember the run on QBs last year). Also, I’m comfortable with Matt Moore starting next year while they groom Tannehill.

HOWEVER, in this scenario, unless Matt Moore leads us to at least one playoff victory (not just “to the playoffs” as a wildcard) next year, Tannehill would be starting QB in the 2013 season, and he better be ready to compete. I’m not saying Pro-Bowl, but by 2014 (his third year in the league), he needs to be producing at a high level to justify a top 10 pick. Melvin Ingram, Riley Reiff, etc, will be starting for their teams in year 1, so if we pass on those guys, Ireland and Philbin better be sure on this.

i dont want to waste a top #10 pick on a guy who was qb this year, and a wr the year before.

It makes me scratch my head. Id rather take a flyer on trent Richardson and have a glutton of rb’s, then take a chance on Tannehill. If the guy had a hesiman year, after being a wr the year before, fine. But he didnt. His team sucked, and there wasn’t much he could do about it.Why would we want that?

too high

If we want tannehill, we should trade down cause there is no way he is going earlier than the 20th pick, the bengals have 2 first round picks, and they might want to trade up for Richardson… just saying

But fans will be okay with it.

Because we have gone into this NEED to take a QB in the first round. It doesn’t matter who. Fans just want a first round QB because that will solve all the problems.

We are so fasicnated by the first round QB that we will justify picking a guy in the top 10 simply so we can say we took a QB in the first round.

I would be fine If we trade down and get this guy and let him watch Manning for a year or 2. Still would prefer Flynn is Philbin is sold on him. Its just set up too good for him to succeed (if he is) here in Miami.

i think it makes more sense for us to trade Matt Moore, especially if hes going to ride the bench and be a fa next year.

by Corners on Feb 18, 2012 12:01 PM EST reply actions

the problem is, no one is going to trade picks for someone who has yet to have a 300 yard game, has been inconsistent throughout his career, and is seen throughout the NFL as nothing more than a backup

Most teams in need of a backup would rather look at free agents like Kyle orton, Jason Campbell, Chad henne, vince young or even Brady Quinn. Teams would also prefer to draft one of the second tier guys like nick foles, kirk cousins, Brandon weeden, brock osweiler or russel wilson, all of which are younger than Moore, with the exception of weeden, and have more untapped potential to be a franchise QB than Moore. Moore will also be in the last year of his contract, and no one will want to trade for someone who may be leaving in a year. Moore is a great backup and I’m almost certain he will be a dolphin next year

I was shocked by this
someone who has yet to have a 300 yard game

So I looked it up and you are nearly correct. He had one 308 yard game in 2010 against SF. In 2009 he also had a 299 yard 3 TD game against Minnesota. It is still surprising though.

Tannehill was a starting wr in 2010, and didnt start as a qb till 2011. You feel comfortable spending a #9 pick on a wr converted to qb? I dont. Id ratehr have one of those tackles or Richardson, then a big project. They shouldn’t be projects in the top 10. They should be pro bowlers.

I don’t see a problem with it as long as we trade down to pick him up 9 is way to high, and what if we end up at 8 that’s just to much of a reach, if he is going to be our choice then we need to trade down to pick him up not at number 8 or 9 way way to high

by hollywood_89 on Feb 18, 2012 12:08 PM EST reply actions

If we trade down for him, i have no problem as it show that mike Sherman has faith in him

By number 9 is way too high for him. He reminds me of Aaron Rodgers coming out of college a both are smart, mobile qb’s with great arms. They were both really raw and needed to be developed for a few years, but had tremendous upside.

Aaron Rodgers was expected to be a real

possibility to go #1. Only players that are expected to be drafted near the top are invited to the draft. Rodgers was able to start right away if needed, Tannehill is most likely going to be a project.

This is all so hard to determine...

Without going through free agency first. But at #9, IMO, I’d take Ingram, Reiff or Kendall Wright. Trust the big board and go BPA.

I agree...

But I have a feeling deep down that we might trade up to grab RG3, in order to satisfy us (the fans) in obtaining a Franchise QB.

Take Tannenhill @ 9

Trading down makes the most sense when you are interested in two or three different players. However, when you are targeting one specific player it is too risky. Cincy was very fortunate that Andy Dalton lasted as long as he did. I thought a team like Seattle was going to draft him. We do not have a shot at getting Barklley next year unless we play like the Colts. BPA makes the most sense except when you are talking about QB. Let see what happens in FA.

by sundevil11 on Feb 18, 2012 1:56 PM EST reply actions

thing is, even if we don't get barkley next year, there are three other QBs that have first round talent

Tyler Wilson, Landry jones and tyler bray, all of which have franchise potential.

No to Tannahill at 8/9

I think that’s much too high for his value and reaching for a QB isn’t the answer. I’d rather see the Fins throw everything into the Matt Flynn derby, bring him to Miami, take Reiff or DiCastro in the first round and find a good tight end in the second round. That way you get a QB upgrade for no picks, improve the O-line considerably and give your new QB a good, safe option to throw to.

I know some people don’t want to take a guard or RT so high – but if Reiff or DiCastro become Pro Bowlers, which looks pretty likely, I’d say you’ve made a very good return on your investment – and without a good O-line your offense will struggle.

I don’t see the Fins even considering Trent Richardson. We now have three pretty good RBs (Bush, Thomas, Messam) on the roster and getting another would not really improve the team in an area of significant need.

I don't mind sucking for Luck - but I draw the line at swallowing.

As much as I want a Round 1 Qb

this is too early…

Like the idea of Manning with Tannehil in the wings, but i dont want to draft a guy to sit on the bench for 2+years. Only if we trade down out of the 7th/8th spot, THEN we can grab Tannehill after

I'm ALL- IN. Do whatever it takes to get Andrew Luck or RGIII to Miami in 2012.

I'd like to see us trade UP...

Luck’s obviously out of the question…but I would like to see our team jump UP and go after RGIII, if they deem Manning or Flynn not an option (for whatever reason). We’ ve been saying we need a franchise QB for years…well, let’s throw a package together that gets one. Hell trade every pick this year and go up there and get RGIII (or God forbid Luck), and fill the other holes with free agents. If we do well, it was worth it…if we do poorly, all the better for the 2013 draft…and THEN we do better…but with an awesome QB to build around.
