Miami Dolphins Quarterback Targets

The Miami Dolphins are looking to upgrade the quarterback position after Matt Moore's 2011 season. Who do you think the team will land?

By now, it is fairly common knowledge that the Miami Dolphins are on the hunt for a new quarterback. Even wide receiver Brandon Marshall has been on the recruiting trail, talking up the Dolphins as a destination for a franchise quarterback. The Dolphins could also be targeting a player in the draft as the future of the team's offense.

But, no one really knows for sure. Will it be the 4-time league MVP Peyton Manning? The backup to this year's MVP, Matt Flynn? A trade for Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III? Offensive Coordinator Mike Sherman's quarterback at Texas A&M, Ryan Tannehill? The 28-year-old minor league pitcher turned Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeded?

Who do you think the Dolphins will land? Vote below.

Flynn considering his connection with Philbin

also I would be happy with Flynn and or Manning would love RG3 but for some reason I would rather keep our picks and build around Fylnn maybe take Tannehill in the second or jump back into the late 1st.
I know and I am one of those persons who think we might take Coples,Ingram but what if Richardson or Blackmon fall to us???

giving a qb franchise qb money just because he played under the coach before is nutz. Nobody can justify that over 2 games in 4 seasons. If he was such hot stuff he would have been traded.

We might as well trade Matt Moore while hes worth something. Pointless to let a possible draft pick ride the bench only to become a fa in 2013

GB can not trade a free agent!

The fact that he was not traded means nothing!

Agreed

Although I think they’d start Moore in that situation to groom Weeden for a year.

Weeden doesn't have time to be groomed

maybe a few games…but that is it

Think/Want

I unfortunately think they’ll sign Flynn, but I want either Henne/Moore or Weeden/Moore. Manning is not the long-term answer. Flynn is unproven for a player who’ll make at least $7-8M. RG3 and Luck will cost too much. Tannehil I’m not sold on, but would take him over Flynn and Manning.

by Drumzan on Feb 18, 2012 9:54 AM EST reply actions

Think

They will bring in Manning / Flynn with Moore being the backup and draft Tannehill to groom.
Manning will need to prove that he is healthy and can make all the throws by FA time, else Flynn will get the job. Although, I’m not 100% sure Flynn is ready to become a starter.

Wants :
I’d like to bring back Henne. I always thought he wasn’t coached right with a good system in place. The coaching staff now seems to be a better atmosphere for development.

by Elzabar on Feb 18, 2012 10:06 AM EST reply actions

Sorry if I wasn't clear

We will get either Manning or Flynn as our starter, with Moore as our back-up. We’ll draft Tannehill as the qb to groom. Manning should hold a session to prove teams that he can still make the throws, else we should go for Flynn.
I wanna give Henne another chance if only he signs as a back-up. He would replace Moore.

Yeah, I see what your getting at....

It won’t be feasible, but I wanna give Henne another shot. It was my want. Deep down, I don’t think our coaching staff was good enough for us to groom a QB to develop. We changed schemes twice during his development period.

by Elzabar on Feb 18, 2012 2:28 PM EST up reply actions

And Moore is under contract so that settles that.

I'm saying "Other" for now.

I think Flynn makes the most sense. But he won’t come cheap. Will Miami be willing to pay him a Kolb like contract of $60M+ over 5 years with $25M+ guaranteed? I don’t know. Someone will offer him that type of contract.

I don’t see Miami moving up in the draft to get RGIII. If that is the case, will Tannehill or Weedon be available in the 2nd round? Would Miami take another 2nd round QB? Can Miami trade down in the first round to get Tannehill or Weedon? Who would want to trade up to the 8th or 9th pick?

That means Manning. If he is the right price (cheap), it might make the most sense. But I have no idea, based on all the reports coming out, if he can throw the football or not. Do the Phins want to roll the dice on a QB that won’t be healthy prior to the draft?

So that leaves Moore and some other QB not listed. I really don’t think Moore will be the starting QB next year. It will be someone else. I’m just not sure who, therefore “Other” was my pick.

Think Flynn....

But I don’t think that’s who we should go after….Manning…IF he’s available…IF he’s healthy…and IF he’s affordable. Would be nice to trade up to get RG III, but I’m afraid we’d have to give up so many picks that we’d not be able to address the other glaring holes we have.

QB Choice

it all comes down to whether or not Philbin thinks Flynn is the guy and/or Sherman thinks Tannehill is the guy. What Ross wants shouldn’t count for anything. Signing Manning would be akin to having the Williams sisters as minority owners – a little sizzle but no steak.

by FWE on Feb 18, 2012 11:23 AM EST reply actions

I think that with the signing of Sherman

all of the Flynn talk may be smokescreen to make another team overpay for him and take a potential quarterback needy team out of the races. I think Sherman is sold on Tannehill’s potential and he’s already told Philbin about it. I think that’ s why they didn’t hire a QB coach, because Sherman wants to coach Tannehill himself. That being said, I’m going to say that we will pick up Manning in FA and draft Tannehill in the first round either by trading back into the first or trading up in the second to back into the first to pick him up. If Ireland really said we’ll like the guy they draft in the first, I assume he’s talking about Tannehill because he knows we all NEED a QB to be drafted in the first. This gives us the highest chance to be successful now with Manning as well as in the future with Tannehill.

Been thinking about this

And I think we will get Flynn. Yea, I know Rpss is supposedly “enamored” with Peyton, but it just seems that whoever he gets “enamored” with, we never get. Harbaugh, Gruden, Cowher, Fisher, blah blah blah. If Flynn is the real deal, there is no better place to go than here in Miami. He has talented WRs, a good group of RBs, good pieces on the OL and whoever we get in the draft would only make us that much better. He would be following his OC that he has known since he got into the league and playing in a system he has been learning since he got here as well. It just makes too much sense (if Philbin believes in him)

Not to mention if he is the real deal, we are set at the position for the next decade. If Peyton comes, yea we could be instant contenders, but we will always have to worry that he might get hurt with every hit. Change our offense to fit him and not the one Philbin and Sherman are familiar with AND we will have to address the QB position in a couple of years.

Its just set up too well for Flynn to come in. Everything from the HC, OC, to the system. It just screams FLYNN. So I think not only that is the way we are gonna go, I think that is the way we should go.

Both Philbin and Sherman have said
Change our offense to fit him and not the one Philbin and Sherman are familiar with

they aren’t going to force players to play a system but rather create a system that best utilizes the strengths of the players they have while trying to hide their weaknesses. So there is a very real possibility they will change their approach from previous experiences.

Maybe

But they can already begin creating that system for Flynn perfecting it if thats who they want.

Who knows FLynn strengths/weaknesses better than Philbin.

Also

they aren’t going to force players to play a system but rather create a system that best utilizes the strengths of the players they have while trying to hide their weaknesses

You can throw all this our the window when it comes to Manning. They won’t be creating anything. They (Or umm Manning) will run the Offense Manning has been running his entire career. He will run the offense, he will call the plays…but then again, he would be the best play caller we had in years.

FA

If Miami signs an FA and it’s not Henne, my vote is the guy nobody is talking about… Jason Campbell. Campbell led the Raiders to a 5-2 record and has west coast offense experience. No to Flynn. No to Manning.

Russell Wilson in the 3rd

still get ingram/couples/upshaw in the first, a brick wall of an o-lineman in the 2nd and Miami’s future in the 3rd

by caneiac27 on Feb 18, 2012 12:18 PM EST via Android app reply actions

Wilson will be available in the 4th, and isn't even 6 foot

He can’t see above the O-lineman and will always be an injury concern.

I see two scenarios that are the most likely to play out:

1) sign Manning and draft Tannehill (most likely trading back)

2) move up in the draft for RG3.

No matter what anyone says Ross wants that franchise QB but he also wants one that will sell season tickets. Manning and RG3 will create instant buzz. Signing Matt Flynn won’t create the same level of excitement, there are to many that see him as AJ Feely or Kevin Kolb 2.0 to get too excited about him until he proves it with wins.

I'm hoping you're right on this

However I do think they’ll settle for Flynn, but I’m praying for Manning or RG III. My best scenario would be your #1, signing Manning and drafting a QB. However if we do sign Peyton I wouldn’t mind drafting Reiff at all so he has better protection.

NO MORE BACKUPS!!

I like the options except for...

Flynn. I’m sorry, but I do think he could turn out to be the next Kevin Kolb. Flash a couple elite moments and then fade… I am very excited we have Joe Philbin making this call because he will know best. If Joe saw an elite quarterback in the guy then I’m behind Philbin 100%

I think Manning, one of, if not the best quarterback of all time. Health is the main concern. If he’s healthy you’d have to be a stupid dolphins fan to not want him.

Robert Griffin is a gamble, but a gamble with huge potential. I would have no problem making him the face of our franchise. He’s a good kid. Has a ton of skill and just knows how to lead a team.

People- Stop overlooking Matt Moore. Philbin is going to develop a system for whatever QB is running it. I think Matt could play even better with another weapon and another big body protecting him. He would be a real cheap option, saving our money for a big time pass rusher! Just a thought… but don’t write him off. Look at what Jim Harbaugh did with Alex Smith.

Just my thoughts…

by Colin McGraw on Feb 18, 2012 4:42 PM EST reply actions

Kolb went to a team that didn't really know him in a system he really wassn't grown up in

FLynn will be coming to a team thhat has his old OC as their HC and playing in a ystem he has learned since being drafted… Two HUGE differences.

I agree with Manning and RG3

No need to stop overlooking Moore, because people aren’t. Moore is a solid backup QB, but he isn’t the guy you want leading your team as the starter. It was clearly obvious with his numbers this year
