52 SACKS! What Franchise QB Would Come Here...?
SERIOUSLY! What franchise caliber QB would come to a team that led the league in sacks per pass attempt? The Dolphins had the WORST pass blocking in the entire league! 52 sacks? Only the Rams and Cardinals had more. How did their QBs do? And that doesn't even take into account all the pressures and hits our QBs took.
Now I happen to think Manning is Miami bound. Is he gonna be healthy? Who knows? But it's worth the risk. I'd take that risk over Flynn. But I'm sure the front office has got to convince Manning that he will be protected before he'll even consider it. No one wants to see the Phins take yet another OL in the 1st round. But what other choice do we have?
Murtha will be back at OT. Jerry seems to have gotten his head on straight and showed he can play OT as well as OG. Carey was solid at RT before being sub-par at OG. So with Murtha, Carey/Jerry, Pouncey, Incognito, Long - problem solved? Obviously not. What happened last year? Murtha went down in preseason and we got stuck with Columbo. What happened the year before? We had Joe Berger (3rd string) starting at Center by year-end. And similar injuries plagued the interior line the year before. So what's the lesson? You need to stack the sh*t out of your OL! You need depth! If you don't, it doesn't matter who plays QB. If Nate Garner is coming in as your sixth offensive lineman and your holding Fasano in to block, then you are losing that game. Guaranteed. How many times did we see that in the past 3 years? Way too many.
In general, I love the notion of the Dolphins taking Mark Barron or Harrison Smith in the draft. Our secondary needs help and a starting safety is the #1 need on defense (depth at corner and another pass rusher are close seconds). But if you're trying to lure Manning, then we need to go all offense in the early rounds of the draft. We need help on the OL and at TE. I'm a huge Charles Clay fan and I think he could be the next Dallas Clark with Manning throwing. But we need depth there too. Apparently Reggie Bush hasn't been blocking so well. So we've gotta be secure at TE and FB (blocking RB) to solidify our pass blocking problem. That's in addition to OL help.
So you see - we have too many pressing needs in the pass offense (and that's before we even get into WRs - I happen to like ours and think we can get by with Marshall, Hartline, Bess, and Gates) to worry about defense. Look at all the good teams out there with weak defenses. Our defense was pretty darn good once Dansby decided to get in shape (the fact that he showed up 25 lbs over weight to start the season is pretty uncool, man. WTF?!?)
Now - I realize that, despite how much ESPN wants us all to believe that defense doesn't matter anymore and it's a QB/offense driven league now, at least 6 of the playoff teams last year were big defense teams. Three out of the final four were defensive teams (Giants, 49ers, Ravens). The Broncos, Steelers, Lions, Texans, and Bengals were also all formidable defensive teams. So I'm contradicting myself here a little. But I agree with ESPN to the point that offense does seem to need to come first these days. The Packers, Saints, and Patriots seemed to dominate all year long. All had terrible defenses.
So the lesson there is - offense gets you to the playoffs if you have a Brady, Brees, Rodgers caliber QB, but defense still wins championships. Do we have a Brady, Brees, Rodgers caliber QB? No. But with a healthy Manning???? Now we're talking.
So I say we stack the offensive line to lure Manning. Then we hope the defense can get it done with essentially the same personnel as last year. That way we'll truly see if Manning has anything left. If he does, we should at least make the playoffs (and who knows - The Patriots weren't that far off from a Super Bowl title with Julian Edelman playing nickel corner). Then we can focus on beefing up the defense and be unstoppable in 2013. Either that, or we see that Manning hasn't got anything left and we can move on to whatever franchise QBs are available next year.

Answer:
Any franchise QB would come here. It’s obvious Miami’s OL won’t stay the same and money talks. Oh, and the most important OL for a QB happens to be perhaps the best LT in the NFL.

Of course Jake Long is perhaps the best in the league. And, of course, that’s the most important to a QB since it’s his blind side. But we gave up 52 sacks even with Long there most of the year. And, yeah, he was hurt most of the year. But he was hurt most of last year too. When is he gonna get healthy. My point is, no matter how good your best linemen are – they still tend to get hurt a lot. And when they do, all hell breaks loose if you don’t have solid backups. And that’s why I’m saying we need some fricken depth on the OL.
…then again – perhaps all of this is solved simply by Columbo not being there. Poor guy. Must suck to be the primary reason your team had a losing season. For his sake, I wish it weren’t true. But it’s hard not to blame him.

OL will improve
I don’t think its necessary to draft an offensive lineman in the first round to have a solid offensive line. Miami will definately draft some offensive lineman, but where in the draft will depend what sherman and philbin think of Jerry and Murtha. Maybe they are the solution, maybe not. Then there is free agency. Does Miami go after nicks or another of the free agent guards or tackles? As to safety, I am hoping new defensive coordinator coyle can improve the play of jones and clemons as he did other safties for the bengals. Maybe the fins sign Reggie Nelson during free agency. and maybe Miami drafts a cornerback fairly high and moves sean smith to safety.
Agreed. I wasn’t necessarily saying that we should draft an OL in the 1st round. I was saying we should focus on OL in the early rounds. And that I would understand if we did go OL in the first round.
The more and more I look at it, the more I think we should trade out of our 1st round pick. If we’re not getting Kalil or Reiff, then the only other sensible way to go is with a pass rusher. But I’m not sold on any of the pass rushers in the early round one tier. So unless one of the undeniable guys like Blackmon or Richardson is there, you should probably trade down if we’re not going OL.

You have to put most of those sacks on 2 players...
1.) Marc Columbo
2.) Matt Moore
When you run around back there like a chicken with your head cut off you are going to occasionally get sacked. When you don’t put your team in the right protection, you are going to get sacked. When you stay in the wrong play, you are going to get sacked…. Manning will fix 1/2 of our problem and either free agency, the draft or John Jerry will fix the other half of the problem. I will also point out the same O-line that gave up 16 sacks the year before when Manning was healthy gave up 35 last season. Some of our problem was our QB. If you hold the ball you take sacks sometimes.
We had [Brady] down… but we didn’t kick him. We helped him up and gave him a PowerPuff Girls band-aid for his knee. What exactly did you expect would happen when we did that?

I was going to say the same thing
A lot of people just look at the raw stats and put the blame on the OL. Columbo was a turnstile and there is no one on this site that will defend him but the QB has to take some of the blame. The QB has to have a timer in his head and get the ball out when the timer expires. I have re-watched some of the games and there were times Moore had at least 5 seconds but ended up taking a sack instead of throwing the ball away. Moore’s inability to set or change pass protection is yet another indicator he isn’t a franchise QB.

but primarily matt moore
as much as i appreciated what he did last season, the man has no awareness and goes through his progressions as slow as i have ever seen. He took wayyyyy too many bad sacks last year and cost us dearly.

Phinphin & 78, as much as i respect all your theories on dolphin related & in general, this is where i take my stick & draw a line in the sand, dirt, ect!
Not only did we not Have the full off saeson, beside’s a shortened preseason. We know from hindsight that “all the spring practice”, went to the incumbent (Henne) on each team, futher-more there was a grace peroid of 2 weeks in this time we secured a back-up & our offense looked real good In said first game! just becuse of all the extra work the ofense had. Good point; look at what that little extra work did for our offense we were on track to being the top err one of the top passing teams. Oh that was with Henne to boot so the 6 or 7 weeks & the week + 1/2 that Moore had with the #1 offence. I beleave that Matt Moore gets to hold on to his roster spot. Unless we get both err Peyton, Flynn,& draft Tannerhill I’m srry i forgot his name!

So are you trying to say that you don't respect my opinion?
Mine was the original comment that took us down the rabbit trail. I will give you the fact that Moore did not have the full offseason and I respect what he did this year for the most part. I definitely want to keep Matt Moore, even if we sign either Manning or Flynn. We need 3 QBs. One to start(Manning or Flynn), one to backup(Matt Moore) and one to develop for the future(Tannehill). I was only making the point that regardless of outside factors the QB did cause a good number of sacks last year himself. He did some good things, and no one here would deny that, and I am sure there were reasons for him causing sacks, but the point is, you can not place all the blame last year on the offensive line.

I think Columbo may have to consider retirement the injury he has seems to make him
one of the worst/the worst tackle in the NFL.

True. But I’m not enough of an expert to know the difference. However, a lot of the time I find myself checking my watch when a guy like Rodgers is back there twiddling his thumbs waiting for someone to get open.
Good OLs can make a bad QB look good. And a good QB (Manning especially) can make a bad OL look good. In 2011 Manning started using a 1-step drop on a regular basis. He was so good that it still worked.
My point, however, is that you want a killer OL regardless. All of our QB options – Manning, Flynn, RG3, Moore, Henne – you don’t want to have to rely on them to keep from taking sacks. Moore and Henne (I know Henne won’t be back) obviously can’t do well without a really good OL. Manning, though he’s good enough to avoid sacks even if the line is crap, will be fragile no matter what. So you don’t even want to risk it. No one knows how Flynn will perform behind a weak line because we’ve never seen him have to deal with that. Even if we get RG3, he’ll be a rookie. Unprotected rookies don’t have a very good track record last I checked. And, though I think RG3 could be a better thrower than Cam Newton, I don’t think he’ll be as durable a runner. I worry that he can’t take the hits.
So whether it’s Manning, Flynn, Moore, or RG3 – I think lining our QB up behind anything less than a stellar OL this year is super risky.

Sounds like someone..
Is a patriots fan Mr. Negativity my god u want us to get Sam Bradford or a Mark Sanchez? Of course our OL will improve plus Manning doesn’t run around like a freaking blind chicken. C’MON MAN!!!
???
I don’t know how anything about my preference for OL improvement over other areas makes me in anyway negative – or god forbid – a patriots fan!
I do believe our QBs made our line look worse than it is. But 52 sacks!!! Worst pass attempt to sack ratio in the league???!!! I don’t care who you are, that’s not acceptable. We need improvement on the OL – and a BIG improvement.

He was overrated
I don’t think he was sub-par, but not Pro Bowl material either
Miami's Superstars: Reggie Bush, Brandon Marshall, Jake Long, Mike Pouncey, Karlos Dansby, Cameron Wake, Vontae Davis and Sean Smith (just wait), Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Mike Stanton, Gaby Sanchez, Hanley Ramirez, Josh Johnson, Heath Bell, Mark Buehrle, Jose Reyes, Tomas Fleischmann, Stephen Weiss, Jose Theodore, and Chris Versteeg. :)
But he go voted
by the players and coaches as a pro-bowl alternate, that means he was pro-bowl material.
He was the 44th ranked OG in the NFL, that isn't anywhere near
“Pro-Bowl material” no matter who voted for him.

Maybe that was a bit harsh for me to call him sub-par. But a lot of times it was hard to say whether it was Carey’s fault or Columbo’s why the right side of the line broke down. Fact is, the right side was total BS all year long. Carey was on the right side. It coudn’t have been all Columbo’s fault.

I've already changed my tune a bit...
I’m jumping on the Weeden, Tennehill, Orsweiler bandwagons. Manning and Flynn are too big of risks. And RG3, though maybe worth the risk, I predict will not have the durability to last as an NFL QB. I think trading down and picking up Weedon or Tennehill along with some other picks is the way to go. There’s some good talent in the late first round and second round for OL. Maybe trade down and pick up Weedon in the late first and Zebrie Sanders in the early second.
The Colts O-line is way over-rated.
Manning has a quick release, and makes his line look better than it is.
You’ll fix a bunch of the sacks by just having a QB that knows what the heck he is doing.
