Are We Next Year's 49ers?

I am 24 years old. I have been watching football since the season Marino retired. I missed the glory days of the 70's. I missed Marino at his prime. I was able to watch some videos of the past eras of Miami Dolphins football and observed closely. I witnessed the way Csonka bulldozed through defenders, how decisive and precise Marino was.

There truly was a different culture. Dolphin fans filled the stands and it seemed as though we had a home field advantage at one point. It gave me chills seeing how dominate we were. Times have changed and will continue to do so, as this is a new era for Miami Dolphins football, which started with our new coaching staff.

As easy as it is to be negative and pessimistic regarding the Dolphins, I believe we are next years 49ers. With an already a good defense, we improve our secondary and get a pass rusher on the opposite end of Wake. At that point we will transition from good to great.

It's safe to say that our starting QB will most likely be either Manning, Flynn, or Moore. Less likely to be Luck, RG3 or Tennehill. Worst case scenario is we start Moore. I'm actually pretty comfortable with this move. That is, if we have no other options, but I'd prefer an upgrade. Alex Smith played in 4 more games and barely had better stats than Moore and look where they made it this year.

Player Att Comp Yds Comp % Yds/Att TD
INT
Long Sck Sck/Lost Rating

Moore 347 210 2497 60.5
16
9 2.6 65 36 229 87.1

Smith 445 273 3144 61.3 17
5 1.1 56 44 263 90.7

Nearly every year there is a team that plays poorly one season, then turns it around the following year and makes a deep run into the playoffs. It's just a matter of perspective. Do you want to believe we are next or not?

naw i want to be like the pats or the packers or the steelers… in the hunt for the big game year in and year out.. not fighting the bottom feeder teams for the first round draft pick.

common sence says if you put a stick in it and stirr if it stinks.. stop.. toss the stick and just walk away.

Take Brady out of the equation (I'm looking at you cam wake and hopefully Melvin Ingram)

And our division is just as bad, if not worse. The jets are in turmoil and are a team in decline, the pats have a horrible defense and no running game, without Brady, their passing game should suffer as well, the bills would be the biggest competitor in thi situation, with a solid young core, but they will probably lose Stevie johnson and will need to retail their WR corps. If the card fall the right way, which theyshould given how easy our schedule is, we are looking at a playoff, or at least a wild card berth.

The Pats are way more than Brady

Fans in general don’t give anybody else credit, but I’d take about 15 guys off of that Patriots roster and have a solid team even without Brady.

That's fine, we can disagree

Of course you put any new QB into an offense and it will take time to gel. But they have solid pieces on their O-line, their tight ends are studs, Welker, and some pieces on defense. Maybe 15 was a little high, but I know it’s close in my opinion. Their defense may be suspect but it’s not like the Giants put up 40 on them in the Super Bowl.

Maybe not that low because they still have something the Colts do not have, one of if not the best coaches

in the NFL but yes there is a sharp fall off without Brady.

Well I certainly disagree

The Patriots roster is way better than the Colts roster. It’s not even close. But I really don’t have time for a lengthy debate, so I’ll start in the trenches which is where most good teams start. The Patriots O-line >>>> the Colts O-line. The Defensive lines are different from each other in that New England uses the bulk with athleticism theory and the Colts line was built mainly with pass rushing and speed in mind. But I still give the advantage to the Patriots because of that freak of nature called Wilfork.

Are the Patriots a worse team without Brady? Duh, of course. Are the Colts 2-14? I’d bet my life savings on that not being the case.

I think so now,

3 years ago, they were better. The patriots really need to focus there first 4 picks this year to improve their entire team. I do think that the patriots are still better than the colts now, but to me, it is very close.

You take the Pats out of the equation?

That’s two games right there and that is a great team you take out. That’s like saying if we had the 2011 Colts squad in our division, than we’d be closer to the NFC West. Well, we don’t.

And besides, the Jets may be in turmoil, but I’d say they’re still better than Seattle, Arizona, and STL. I’d feel pretty comfortable saying Buffalo could be just as good as any of those three teams as well.

I'm not sang taking the pats out

I’m saying if Brady were out for the season and they had to start mallet, and the jets will have to lose a lot of their players an don’t have much cap room. The bills are on the rise, yes. I think that if Brady were injured next year, that combine with our easy schedule, could bring us anywhere between 10-6 and 12-4, which should get us the division. The bills could finish of between 8-8 and 10-6, the pats between 7-9 and 10-6 and the jets between 5-11 and 8-8

New Green Bay Packers....

I think Miami will take a page from the packers and be good year in and year out. Philbin will bring that from the packers. Notice all the young coaches he has hired, and kept the good coaches from Sparano. I am hoping the new personnel can actually coach players to improve their performance. With Sherman running the offense, Miami should have a top 10, if not a top 5, offense. Coyle is more of a question mark, but I am hoping he can improve the secondary since he was a secondary coach. And don’t forget Miami will run a
west coast offense. Pat Devlin was a very accurate QB in college, and might fit the bill as the new starter for Miami. Accuracy is the number 1 asset for a QB in the west coast offense.

by tpl on Feb 14, 2012 5:49 AM EST reply actions

Well, the green bay model (from a "success every year"-perspective) is not tied to the HC

but rather the FO. While I really think that Philbin will take us to the next level, this does not ensure long time success in the green bayish’ way

There is a great series of articles on the field gullls page about the “green bay” model from a roster perspective:

You won’t know the whole team until after the offseason but Matt Moore is a backup!
No way we go in as our only starting option next year,

This is a passing league now, not a ground and pound league. Our defense does not measure up for the 49ers anyway.

We need help at CB, O-line, WR, TE, LB, S, and QB. We need help in a lot of areas. I don’t think we are one offseason away

No way

Linebacker is definitely NOT a need, neither is oline if Jerry and murtha start at RG and RT. Even though our WR corps could be improved, Marshall, hartline, bess and gates are good for now. At CB, Davis and smith are adequate as starters, and Jimmy Wilson or Nolan carrol should step up into the nickel role, if not, then we can get jayron hosley or Brandon boykin in the 3rd. Clay should help our TE problems, while fasano is a good starter. We can get coby fleener in the 2nd for this. QB is a huge need though.

Its hard to debate with fans such as yourself who always tries to spin the fins way

Look at reality. In a 4-3 who would start with Dansby and Burnett? Koa Misi who has always played DE and Rush Linebacker?

Marshall drops touchdowns and Hartline is mediocre. Gates has only 2 catches I think last year. Bess is good but he is only a slot guy.

Will Allen is a free agent so we need a nickel corener (Jimmy Wilson is awesome but not a #3 corner who is very important in todays NFL)

Clay is an H-Back. He is too short to be full time TE. He also has never played TE. (Was a FB and H-Back in college). Fasano is not a good starter. He is a good backup. I want a Jermichael Finley, a Jimmy Graham, Gronkowski, etc. I want someone who can stretch the seam CONSISTENTLY. Fasano dissapears too much.

Remember this team did go 6-10 last year. Something has to be said for lacking talent, right?

Go Heat and Dolphins

by mikethedolphinsfan on Feb 14, 2012 8:42 AM EST up reply actions

I don't think we drafted Misi as a rush LB..

People that were expecting him to be that have been disapointed, but he is a jack of all trades type LB…

We had [Brady] down… but we didn’t kick him. We helped him up and gave him a PowerPuff Girls band-aid for his knee. What exactly did you expect would happen when we did that?

by Jason Scott_90 on Feb 14, 2012 8:34 PM EST up reply actions

You don’t draft a backup jack of all trades backup linebacker in the 2nd round. He was drafted to be a rush linebacker and failed. He played a 3-4 outside linebacker and did not have much production. He did play DE in college so I am pretty sure they did not draft him to be linebacker that does not rush the QB.

Go Heat and Dolphins

by mikethedolphinsfan on Feb 14, 2012 8:51 PM EST up reply actions

MLB is a need in the 4-3 with Dansby and Burnett at OLB.

And sorry, but I am not comfortable going into next season with Jerry at RG and Murtha at RT. I will give credit to Jerry that he played pretty well at RG, but I don’t feel it was enough to give him the starting position without competition. Murtha just hasn’t shown enough in regular season games over the past few years to make me comfortable with him without competition either. I don’t think we need great FA signings, but if we do need to get someone to at least compete for the position.

As for CB, you can’t go back and draft someone for the nickel role after finding out if Wilson or Carroll don’t work out. It’s also a lot to ask of a rookie to fill the nickel position in their rookie season. It’s a very tough position to play.

Overall, if you say a position “can be improved” and you have the ability to improve it along with cap space, you should consider improving it. If the position can be improved, I say it is still a need. Maybe not a huge need, but a need.

THIS^^^

First off I am more of a reader on this site not a poster, but this post " r we the the next 9ers" got me going. NO we are not we r the MIAMI DOLPHINS!!!! Would I like to have the record the 9ers had- of course, we ended up with 6 wins but some one please tell me how many games were we winning til the very end, when play calling killed us? 5 games at least, we were UP 27 on the patsies that second game,Denver, browns, Dallas, the S.B winning giants, that’s just what I remember off the bat, and we did it all with backup Qb, so with upgrade there, and holes filled in, along with new HC. And hopefully better play calling, and an eaiser schedule, I thinking BIG things! Don’t forget our D was 6th in points allowed, which to me is the biggest stat that matters. We repeat that with a real Qb to finish games, not fist pumping FG’s and we very well may find our way back to the top, and if its Flynn at the helm we may stay there for along time. GO PHINS!!!!!! Any.one else think we are that close to being GREAT once again????

I was using the 9ers as a metaphor...

Aside from that, I agree with everything you said. I believe we are close. Like you said, we were a few plays away from 4-5 more wins this year. We need to close out games in the 2nd half and be able to play from behind as well.

by PhinnyFromItaly on Feb 14, 2012 10:39 AM EST up reply actions

in reality,

and in many ways we do mirror the 49ers. If i had a second favorite team, it would be them. I have followed them failry closely due to one of my best friends loving them. They have similar structure and really, if anything, pulled a 2008 Dolphins this season. They won becuase they turned the ball over the least and played smart small ball just like we did 2008.
My friend and i debate this all the time, and i would take our current roster over the 49ers all day everyday. The 49ers have 2 players that i truly covet, Patrick Willis (dominator) and Aldon Smith (should have been defensive rookie of the year). Outside of those two, I think we have a better team. They are just in a shitty division and played smart football all year.

Like the 49ers? Did you see the fans at the 49ers games this year? People actually go to the game to actually root for a football team. Until the Dolphins have a home-field advantage they will continue to battle the Bills for last place until they move to LA.

Notice how all the crappy teams (outside of Cincy) have crappy Home field advantage and attendance. Add in the fact that Miami has just awful sports fans (that live in the area) and you get the present day Miami Dolphins led by Jared Odrick& Brian Hartline who want to put their franchise hopes in the hands of a 37 year old QB with neck problems.

Or maybe one of you guys wants to post about Julius Pruit becoming the next Victor Cruz? For the 88th time? I didn’t root for the Dolphins this year and oh how sweet it was. Not putting up with this franchise and their lack of support, I don’t live in Miami and I went back to my roots, the G-Men.

convenient yes, weak, no

What about my evidence in the link I attached? I am sure if people from phinsider could be teleporting to sunlife stadium on sundays the crowd would be decent but thats just not the case. The home field advantage is gone, no noise, no fire= no wins.

The game has no fans because the team is mediocre and has been for the last decade. The fans have nothing to do with the teams struggles

and yet the top 4 teams this year didn't make the playoffs

Nor has the has the 49ers crowd won them any playoff berth for a while till they got a decent coach.

Except you're not looking at the entire picture when you consider home field based on noise...

You post the % of seats sold, not the total amount. While the Dolphins averaged close to 61,000 in 2011 and ranked low, that hasn’t been the case for these recent years. In 2010, they averaged close to 68,000 fans and ranked 16th in the NFL, ahead of teams like KC, Indy, Pittsburgh, Chicago, and Minnesota. They trailed Atlanta by about 100 seats and New England by around 1,000 seats. A lot of that has to do with seating capacity. Still, Miami had just as many fans in their stadium as New England and Pittsburgh did.

Now, there are a few reasons why Miami hasn’t been that loud. For one, their play at home didn’t exactly inspire fans to be loud (minus loud booing). Second, their stadium has never been known to be loud. The Dolphins have their sideline seats further back than most stadiums because they accomodated the Florida Marlins. Having the stands further back from the playing field also has an affect on how loud the crowd is.

The 2011 attendance was among the worst attendance years in JRS history and a ton of that had to do with an 0-6 start to the season. Again, in 2010, Miami brought just over 541,000 fans to the stadium. It’s a very low figure, but the Dolphins had less of a draw back in 1993 even and still found a way to win games. Miami’s decline in attendance occurred in 2007, when they went 1-15. Before then, they were still bringing in a solid 585,000 people per year, which is about where they have been in their history of JRS when they were very successful. Is it a surprise the Dolphins plunge in attendance occurred when Miami went 1-15, dropped lower when they started 0-6, and failed to recover in between when they couldn’t win at home? You are right that winning and attendance goes hand in hand, but you have the theory backwards. That’s why a place like New Orleans also averages 5,000 fans more now than they did 5 years while Miami’s declined.

I couldn't think of any stadium that didn't...

But without knowing, I just didn’t want to make it a blanket statement. Now I can! I do believe that is a large factor when considering how loud our stadium is compared to others. Moving the seats in closer was one of the first things I mentioned for the stadium upon the Marlins moving out.

reply to mike the dolphin fan

fasano is a good starter and he can to use the most overrated phrase in football " stretch the field" you say he disappears to often well ask the coaches why that happens, they call the plays , i’ll say it again and this comes straight from sporano he kept fasano in to block on over 200 plays in each of the last 2 seasons , so with that being said the numbers fasano put up in a very limited role are damm good. Don’t you think fasano would love to be out running routes on every play , but being the TEAM player that he is , he does the job thats asked of him and doesn’t bitch and complain like some other players on the team do. get anthony involved more instead of having to block for the lousy O line and he"ll put up real good numbers. the fins have alot of holes to fill and worry about but the tight end position is not one of them !!!
