kmb8488's Dolphins-Oriented Big Board 1.0

It can be tiring work whittling down an entire draft class into a top 20 best-of list, and since the members of this site are primarily interested in the prospects who could be in Miami next season, I've run any and all 2012 NFL Draft entrants through a Dolphins-only filter. The result? Your first Dolphins-only Big Board of the pre-draft season.

Star-divide

Rank

Player

Position

Height/ Weight

School

1

Melvin Ingram

DE

6'1 7/8", 276

South Carolina

A tweener pass-rusher who would fit in well with the Dolphins' 4-3 hybrid scheme

2

Justin Blackmon

WR

6'1", 215

Oklahoma St.

Blackmon would be the perfect welcoming gift for Peyton Manning or Matt Flynn

3

Quinton Coples

DE

6'5 3/4", 285

North Carolina

A powerful, run-snuffing end with better-than-advertised pass-rushing skills

4

Riley Reiff

OT

6'6", 300

Iowa

The best tackle in this draft class; would form an impenetrable bookend with Jake Long

5

Courtney Upshaw

OLB/DE

6'2", 270

Alabama

Projects as an outside linebacker, but has the build to play end in certain 4-3 schemes. Does everything well.

6

Ryan Tannehill

QB

6'3 3/4", 225

Texas A&M

Tremendous-yet-raw QB prospect with good arm strength and considerable upside

7

Michael Floyd

WR

6'3", 225

Notre Dame

Big-time wideout with size, excellent hands and adequate speed

8

Jonathan Martin

OT

6'6", 305

Stanford

The premier road-grading tackle in this class. Sub-par footwork might keep him on the right side at the next level

9

Mark Barron

S

6'1", 220

Alabama

Instinctual, do-everything safety who would immediately bolster the Dolphins' secondary

10

Kendall Wright

WR

5'10", 195

Baylor

Explosive playmaker who could be a No.1 wideout or vertical threat in the NFL

11

David DeCastro

G

6'4", 315

Stanford

As good as it gets for a college guard. Does everything well and should be a starter right off the bat

12

Brock Osweiler

QB

6'8", 240

Arizona State

Strong-armed, deceptively athletic signal caller. Intangibles remain in question, but the physical tools are all there

13

Dwayne Allen

TE

6'4", 255

Clemson

Antonio Gates-type tight end with exceptional speed and hands. Really improved as a blocker in 2011

14

Chandler Jones

DE

6'5", 250

Syracuse

Undersized end with the speed and strength to make a difference in the 4-3

15

Coby Fleener

TE

6'6", 250

Stanford

Massive tight end prospect with good speed and even better hands

16

Cordy Glenn

G/T

6'5", 340

Georgia

Huge, versatile lineman who could play either tackle or guard at the next level

17

Harrison Smith

S

6'1", 215

Notre Dame

A riser at safety. Fast enough to play the point and strong enough to smack the run. Will remind you of former Dolphins great Brock Marion

18

Zebrie Sanders

OT

6'5" 310

Florida State

A sleeper tackle prospect who projects well on the right side in the NFL. Solid run blocker with blooming pass-protection skills

19

Zach Brown

OLB

6'1", 225

North Carolina

Speedster linebacker prospect who will likely play the will position in the NFL

20

Kevin Zeitler

G

6'4", 315

Wisconsin

A bulldozing interior lineman with intelligence, adequate athleticism and excellent strength

Great post

My choices would be.
1st round: Melvin Ingram
2nd round: Zebrie Sanders
3rd round: Brock Osweiler

Osweiler will not last until the 3rd.

I would have disagreed with that a week ago,

but now it looks like he’s being hyped up pretty good. After watching a lot of footage on him and Tannehill, I believe that Osweiler has more upside but is more raw. I would be extremely happy if we took Reiff in the first and then Osweiler fell to the third and we picked him up, but I would not be disappointed if we picked him up in the second. Hey, if Mallett can fall to the third because of off the field rumors, then I’m sure Osweiler can fall to the third because he’s a raw talent and worst comes to worst, we pick him up in the second or trade up in the second to pick him up like we did with Thomas.

The crazy thing is that there is some talk of him going in the late first. I for one do not see that but you never know

what will happen if one team or another falls in love with a kid. I personally can not see it but I doubt he gets out of the second now.

I don't know

My personal choice is
1st round: Melvin Ingram
2nd round: Tannehill (given our OC taught him in college that should be a great start)
3rd round: Cordy Glenn, although I am torn here.

Personally we need a pass rusher, tackle, QB to develop (assuming we trade for someone decent), safety.
The percieved need for a TE, CB, G, WR are not real needs, they are luxuries, we have players who can do a good job and an upgrade/depth would be nice, but there are other positions were we need someone now.

by DickDevil on Feb 13, 2012 8:39 AM EST reply actions

Tannehill is most likely not going to last in to the second. And if somehow he does someone will trade up to the top of that

round to snag him.

Blackmon - or TRADE DOWN

Trading down is our best bet we could really use an extra pick as we need OL (G and T) to START… we need a Pass rusher DE… we need a ball hawking safety (Barron fits nicely) but only way down in the 1st. To me Blackmon is a game changer at WR – and this is passing league ! I also really like Kendall Wright and think that he made RG3 look very good at times. I am not sold on any of the top 2 DE’s (size and character concerns) But I would like to see some combine 40 times and determine their initial “burst” I just HATE the idea of taking yet another DL in the first round. How has that worked out for us under Fat tony and super-douche Bill ?
WE NEED PLAYMAKERS ON OFFENSE – and time to throw the ball. which means an OT or G is a huge priority…again…
I like Tanneyhill a Little – but not high in the first rd… would rather try fro Barkley next year – and we should look to trading back this years and maybe even getting an additional first next year, instead of second this year.

Blackmon maybe, but Coples has been slotted in the 7-12 range for a while now

I can see a bizarre scenario where Blackmon somehow falls to No.8/9, but I can’t imagine RG3 falling to the Dolphins. That’s why he’s not on my Big Board.

Melvin Ingram in 2012!

me either....

wither way, this 1st round pick is probably more valuable to us as trade bait than anything else.

Perfect scenerio for me:

1. Get Peyton Manning or Flynn,
2. Trade 1st round pick for 1st rounder next year and a 2nd rounder this year and next year.
3. Draft a RT, FS, DE in the second round (whatever 2 makes the most sense based on who is available, then grad the other in the 3rd.
4. Dominate this season
5. Trade next years 2 1st rounders and 2 2nd rounders in order to draft Matt Barkley.

My mock

1st Round – Melvin Ingram – DE
2nd Round – Coby Fleener – TE
3rd Round – Brandon Boykin – CB
4th Round – Brian Quick – WR
5th Round – Russell Wilson – QB

If I were Ireland, I’d re-sign Henne for another year to compete with Moore and have them groom a rookie QB. I’m not sold on Wilson, I’d be just as happy with Weeden, Cousins or Osweiler but it’s hard to pass up on Fleener and Boykin if available in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

by Drumzan on Feb 13, 2012 10:23 AM EST reply actions   1 recs

the only thing I agree with here

is ingram and Wilson un the 5th if he’s still there i’ve seen in other boards broncos and the pack are watching that guy but only if we get flynn or manning I would wait til the 5th round to solve that issue with either of those 2. I wouldn’t draft a TE I’d us FA to solve that…Henne is gone let him stay that way. I also would mind seeing upshaw in aqua and Orange.

Yes

I wanted Keenum in the 5th but I like Wilson’s ability to possibly become Brees 2.0.

by JuniorCane on Feb 13, 2012 4:35 PM EST up reply actions

My idea, and one that probably wont come to pass

Is to trade back 5-6 spots, pick up David Decastro, use the 2 number 2s and next years 2 to move back into the first around the 27-29 range and pick up Mark Barron.

Better than quantity, we need quality. Here we get two grade a prospects that will solidify needs at two positions of need. Also, it allows us to cut Bell and Carey to free up cap space that we could then use on a QB and A free agent or two, perhaps even a pass rusher opposite Wake in the 4-3.

by dolphinfan4lyfe on Feb 13, 2012 10:52 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Sorry i just have a gut feeling that we would miss a Logan Mankins type Guard if we dont draft this guy

A line that boasts:

Long. Decastro. Pouncey. Incognito. Jerry/Murtha

Would go a long way towards solidifying the spot for years. Also, it would allow us to focus on restructuring our cap space to better our ability to pick up quality players in free agency. We would no longer need to look through the second and third tier free agent heap for our guys. Just seems more viable to me.

by dolphinfan4lyfe on Feb 13, 2012 10:59 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

Free agency is before the draft

Also, Carey is a FA anyways.

I could see us picking up DeCastro if Reiff was off the board.

1st Round – Reiff (Decastro if Reiff’s gone) – OL
2nd Round – Coby Fleener – TE
3rd Round – Brock Osweiler – QB
4th Round – Brian Quick – WR

I know we may have to trade back into the second to pick up Osweiler, but it would be a steal. He’s going to be great after a few years of sitting behind Peyton Manning.

I dont know...

I am still more interested in a RT than a 6 foot nothing pass rusher. But to be honest, I am really more in learning as much as possible stage and not the claiming i know what is best for the team phase.

There seems to be alot of questions about what kind of scheme we will be running on defense, so i am waiting to see what the team does before i start gettign excited about potential pass rushers. I feel like i am alone in thinking that our defense is good enough without adding a 1st round pick to the mix. It seems like our offense should be addressed early in the draft.

I am also leaning towards finding a great TE early as well.

I like Fasano, but i dont know what his ceiling is. I dont know if we are underutilizing our TEs or if Fasano just isnt good enough. That dude from Stanford seemed like a beast and made Luck look good.

Fasano

isn’t the quickest TE (4.7 I believe, in his younger days). But i believe we drastically under utilized the position in the past, especially in the redzone. The few times we have gone to Fasano, he has shown the ability to catch and make plays. And his blocking is tremendous as well. I think the weakness of the O Line necessitated his babysitting duties though. Hopefully improved O Line play will allow us to have that extra option in the pass game (especially if we can convert this new CFL RB to TE at 6’3" 245 lbs with 4.4 speed).

Right, because no 6'1" DEs have ever had an impact in the NFL

And that “man-love” was pretty much earned this season. He’s a versatile pass-rusher with boatloads of upside and excellent speed for the position. There’s a risk with taking any pass-rusher in the top 15, but Ingram looks like a great prospect. You’ll just have to accept the fact that he doesn’t play right tackle.

Speaking of pass rushers, i just want to take the time out to congratulate one that now one thought would ever play in college again, let alone

In the NFL. Im talking about Mark Herzlich. Went from undrafted prospect that had cancer, to a Super Bowl ring wearer. Even if this guy only lasts 3-4 years in the NFL, he has one hell of an experience to look back on.

by dolphinfan4lyfe on Feb 13, 2012 5:22 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

i am not suggesting that no 6'1 DE has had an impact.

i just find it funny how quickly people judge certain positions based on size and ignore others. Sure, a 6’1 DE could have an impact, but god forbid a 6’0 QB is worth even looking at, right? Just pointing out the hypocracy. And i am not targeting you, I am merely making a statement based on how many others on this site evaluate players.

Informative Post, KMB and rec'd.

I’m still hoping to trade up though, so that we have the money to spend in FA. Luck or RG3 can happen and I think Moore will do until our franchise qb learn the system. Getting Manning will require veteran help on the OL(FA) to keep him worry free about that next big hit and getting Flynn will cost us Kolb money and lower our splash in the FA market where there are numerous of proven gems to fill several of our gaping needs.

Get the best man to clear every hurdle that stand in the Dolphins way, go RG3.
RG3, the new Transformer of the future.
