Other than Tannehill and Martin this rookie class has been ghost so far. So with the playoffs out of reach we should take this opportunity to get a feeling of what we have before the season ends.
One of the bright spots this season has been Marcus Thigpen. We've seen his ability to return touchdowns using great vision and speed. Now lets design plays on offense that get him in space. Line him up at both running back and receiver. He has the potential to be a home-run threat. Let's see if we can release that potential.
Another potential home-run threat on ice is Lamar Miller. I understand he has issues with blocking, but get him in a game and coach him up Philbin! Bush and Thomas should still see most of the snaps. Five touches a game with four games left should be enough to get some good tape of Miller.
Richard Matthews has been getting more playing time recently, but I want to see him targeted A LOT more. Matthews seems to be flashing some good hands combined with speed and strength. We could really use any help at WR. This draft is looking extremely thin for #1WR's and we may likely have to address the #1WR issue in FA. Knowing if Matthews is starting material or not will help us out because we need two WR's this offseason a #1 and a #3.
Next up is Charles Clay. I know he isn't a rookie but this young player has been making more plays recently. I want to see him running down the seem and targeted even more. Maybe he will prove we don't need a TE.
Now for the biggest ghost of the class, Egnew. We need to put him in a game to see if he is a gamer. But in all honesty I think this kid is already a bust. From Hardknocks, I got the felling he could careless about playing in Miami. I thought he had the I don't really care attitude. The way I see it, his draft status is the only reason he's still on the team. I could be wrong so give him some opportunities down the seam.
Finally I want to see Josh Samuda. The UDFA center was a big surprise during camp. With Jake Long likely out for the season we can shuffle him into the line. The line should look like Martin LT(playing his college position) Incognito, Pouncy, Samuda at RG, and Jerry at RT(playing his college position). We could try this line up after the 49ers game because experimenting too much against that defense is a mistake.
I hope Philbin uses this time wisely. It can go a long way to help us this offseason and next season. This rookie class with Clay could fix a lot of needs. The best way to find out is to give them opportunities with the pigskin in hand.
