From One to Number One By George Poston, December 1973 We went to Kansas City, The first game on the road, And a win up there against the Chiefs We knew was quite a load. But the Dolphins would not be denied, That’s where it all begun. We came back to Miami With victory number one. Then we played the Oilers, It was our first home game. No one thought the Dolphins Would ever be the same, But we showed them that the Dolphins Knew exactly what to do We sent them back to Houston We had victory number two. Next was Minnesota And it really was a test Cause now the people wondered Which one was really best. Although the Vikings got ahead, It never was to be Because in the fourth quarter We picked up victory number three. Then it was off to New York City To meet the powerful Jets And that’s when all the people Really started making bets. But they found out the Jets Were not so powerful anymore So we left New York City With a big win, number four. Then the San Diego Chargers Had their turn to come to town. I’m sure you will remember They put Bob Griese down. But Morral came into the game To keep our team alive We disposed of San Diego For victory number five Then Buffalo came down here With an upset on their mind Cause a team with five straight victories Is something hard to find Until the final quarter They had us in a fix But we stood them off by one point And we had number six So now it was off to Baltimore Where the Colts were having trouble Would be a feather in their caps To burst Miami’s bubble But they soon found out that They were only dreaming of heaven Cause at twenty three to nothing, The Dolphins had number seven OK, off to Buffalo To meet the lowly Bills If they could beat us this time It was surely cure their ills. But they realized, until next year They would have to wait We’re waiting for New England now Cause we have number eight Now Shula told his players, Of New England have no fear But please try to remember What they did to us last year. But at fifty-two to zero With the third string on the line The Patriots were humble And we had number nine. And now it was the Jets again With everyone excited And Joe Willie would do his best To get his team ignited. Cause they were still in the playoff scene, If they could only win. At twenty-eight to twenty-four We pick up number ten Well now we are at home again, Our third week in a row And the Cardinals from St Louis Was to be the Dolphins foe. The score was thirty-one to ten, They were lucky to get seven, But after all was said and done We had put away eleven. Now back up to New England, There’ll be two games on the road And with the mounting pressure The whole team shared the load. The stature of our defense Was questioned in the game But we wound up winning number twelve, We beat them just the same. The New York Giants came next, Remember that other league By now they knew the Dolphins Must surely show fatigue But they did not play on poly turf It looked more like a dirt screen Then we came home to meet the Colts, We had just won number thirteen. For the last game of the season The Colts had come to town And they sure determined That they would put us down They had many brand new faces That had burst upon the sports scene Still, we came out the victor And that was number fourteen Then there was the playoff games, The wild card was our lot We had to prove to Cleveland If we could win or not So, with eight minutes left to play, We seemed to be just drifting But Morral got them on the move And that was number fifteen. Now Three Rivers Stadium, I’m sure you are aware That those big bad Steelers Were supposed to beat us there. For us to win our sixteenth game It really was not easy But the mighty Steelers had forgot We still had Bob Griese. Then out to the Super Bowl, To meet the Redskins there And I can tell you people, Their team was pretty fair. But they found out that the Dolphins were They best they had ever seen And so we left the Super Bowl With number seventeen. So we wiped out the Redskins, Just to prove we could. But there are still many people Who say we’re not that good. But if you put together The accomplishments we’ve done Like just a perfect season, We must be number ONE!
