Ya know,....you can fix just about anything with duct tape. And if that tape comes in Dolphins colors its bound to hold even better and look fabulous,....
Soon enough night gave way to the sunrise and it was going to another perfect day for cycling.
The Dolphins did something smart with the ride this year. Do you see that rider with the orange safety vest ? His name is Brain Hill and he is a pro cyclists and our ride marshall. Dude looks like he is built for speed and I chatted with a while about some cycling pointers and small talk for 30-40 minutes at the beginning of today's ride.
I could see this coming from last year's event. We all want to roll into the stadium first, but there is a bit of a problem for a cyclist, much less the converted format of ride to race. There's lots of lights and cops stayed with group, leaving the riders to manage the lights on the way in while trying to maintain position for the last corner and sprint going into the stadium. Hello potential l train wreck . Hence the addition of a ride marshall and a controlled finish.
This year it was announced that the ride on 595 to the training camp is the time give what you got. 10 miles with most of it on 595. I got this, I put in the work. All weekend I've positioned myself towards the front. Now I know I cant hang with a pro cyclist, but the average joe weekend warrior such as myself,......bring it. Rest stops go like this : rack your bike grab food & water, piss, get bike a repositioned,.....maybe throw out a quick call or text. Gridlock can be a bitch, and even more so on a bike. Get in front and stay them is my mentally,....you don't half to worry about what's behind you. But like everything in life it came with a slight hitch today. Claudia from the Dolphins production crew wanted to do a short interview. Great interview,.....horrible position. Again I have trained and I was going my way back to the front.
I haven't been a cyclist long, but I have picked up on a few things. A good breakaway group would not have been caught by someone poorly position. We had about a quarter, maybe half mile to the ramp, then it was 4 wide taking to the highway.
I look and look but don't see myself. But I'm in there somewhere. Eventually those gaps became greater and greater for some, I looked to press on, and press on I did. In the end I think I used 2 or 3 groups to to reeling the leaders before rolling into the Dolphins training camp. 595 was a bitch and I wanted to quit a couple of time. Each time I made a move I had to work. So by the time we exited 595 Myself & another rider had the leaders in sight,....but not close. 500 ft maybe,....all I know was we where going to have to bust our asses if we wanted to catch them. I'm not sure how much they slowed vs how had I worked. But I do know this, I dropped the that fellow soon after I began to push. Our pro cyclists ain't no joke either ! That cat can fly and hung around giving encouragement for a minute or two before falling back to watch the main group. I caught them. I was use to riding alone, I knew we were closing in on our next stop, and I just keep pushing. I wanted to quit a couple time once exiting, But I thought about Bo's speech at Sylvester the day before and the sign I carried on my own bike. I could see them,....so I just kept pushing. No Quit.
And who do I roll into a camp ??? One of my football hero's Zach Thomas. Know you guys know me on hype mode. I just blew it up on the course and ready to head for home to wrap up this weekend. So, I tell him a bit of "our' story and i would love to catch a photos once back at the stadium. Hell yes he agreed with a big ass grin.
The ride to the stadium was kind of tense. Direct orders were to ride 2X2 in formation to the stadium. Again positioning from the start is key and I did so. But every chance there was riders were trying to jump position. I was firmly in the 3rd row, but just didn't want to get to crazy heading for home and just settled in around the 8th row ( give or take ). I didn't see half of those son of a bitches when it was time to put up or shut up back on the highway. I know where I finished,...right up front !
MONEY SHOT !
For those of you who go way back,....John Offerdahl was the Dolphins jersey I ever owned. I liked him as a player and he's kind a goofy good time charlie i person. Prior to me talking me I saw him having fun with the fans over by some cheerleaders. And again with the inflatable 'TD" by "make believe" tackling him,.....which in fact left him on the ground stuck in a supine position. I should have had a photo of that, but wasn't thinking fast enough,....
Pretty cool,....I fart, pissed, shit,......and showered in the same place the team does.
How much does a pro cyclist ride per week ? A lot,....20 to 25 hours with some weeks being 30+hours ( which he called brutal). All with different training workout. I liked what he said during our chat on the road. The only difference between him and I is that he goes faster,......the legs hurt just the same when pushing. That helped me catch the lead pack on 595.
I want to share something with you. This picture came off my camera. A Dr with his seventeen year old patient who had recently lost his leg to cancer. He pulled him 30 miles and this is their finish !
Today I unload my bike and while bringing it to the room I took my Uncle's picture off the frame. I broke down on the spot. It hit me hard,....like a damn had burst. It was about 3 minutes which I had to just let go as I thought about where all of this has taken my life. I don't want to be a in a cancer ride. I go through all the "what if's" & "why me's",....and wonder what it would be like if Uncle Brad was still around today. As I sob I slowly pull it together and realize that so many of us have a story,....a heart breaking story.
So,....here's is where we can step up again. Zach ( shame on him ) hasn't raised a cent until a few a couple bucks at him last night. I forgot to leave him a message,.....so if you can help him out by donating as buck or two,....tell hwe got his back !!!

There is some funny video out there that Ralph shot and I haven't watched it all yet,....but I will
Obviously I was still riding some sort of adrenaline high !!!
Tanya at some point yesterday,.....too funny. I love her !!!
Tanya also has some pretty good "raw" video as well. As if I don't have enough on my plate to learn video making. I should forward the footage to ralph,....
