Sorry for the late arrival, but some friendly dolphins fans have been on StampedeBlue taking questions so figured a colts fan should come over here. Big game this weekend with two 4-3 teams fighting for a playoff spot. Even bigger given that both teams were probably projected to have a top 10 pick by most experts next draft! Its pretty crazy to think that either the dolphins or colts will be 5-3 sunday night, but that's today's NFL.
Below are my thoughts:
- The colts have won 2 in a row, and although neither win was pretty, it was nice to see our running game do very well in both games, as well as our run D. Hope that continues for the rest of the year, as the run game (both O and D) has been a weakness for many years now.
- Colts weaknesses: pass rush and pass protection - Freeney has been playing on a high ankle sprain, and is just plain old, so he hasn't been doing much this year.. Mathis was injured but is back this week, really need him to produce. other than Mathis, nobody else has gotten much pressure this year, and our blitzes tend to get picked up rather easy. As far as pass protection goes, it has been pretty awful all year. Luck gets hit every other passing play and would be approaching david carr sack totals if he wasn't so good at moving in and out of the pocket
- Colts strengths: passing attack - colts don't do many things great this year so far, but Luck is on pace for over 4500 yards as a rookie. at this pace he will shatter Cam Newton's rookie record. Luck's only weakness is the deep ball, where he has proven to be pretty inaccurate and has not connected yet this year, even though Avery has been wide open a few times. Luckily, Luck is great at everything else. He excels at the short to intermediate passing game, decision making, and pocket presence. In fact, I think he is one of the best QB's in terms of pocket presence in the NFL today. He's been sacked 18 times this year, but that number would at least be double if he didn't step up at the right time, or escape the pocket. Plus he can make throws with trash at his feet and guys hanging on him, and he's gotten good practice at it cause our Oline ensures it happens almost every play!! Reggie Wayne is also playing great and making ridiculous catches - diving 1 handed grabs, catches in traffic, catches with a guy hanging on his back, etc. Wayne looks awesome this year so far, reminds me of Marvin Harrison and Peyton Manning in Peyton's early years. the other receivers/TE's have been solid so far, except maybe Avery who has dropped too many balls and doesn't look like a starting WR to me
Anyways, that's enough for now. Should be a great game this weekend. Please feel free to ask questions if you have any. Hopefully some other colts fans can come over and participate.
