The 2012 Miami Dolphins currently sit at 1-3 on the season but they look much better than that; they pass the eye test. They look like a competitive team; not like the team they were "supposed to be" (via analyst predictions). In so many ways they look like top teams in the league....teams that move the ball at will, teams that play tough defense, teams that put points on the board. Perhaps that is why this year has been so frustrating as a Dolphins fan. This was supposed to be a rebuilding year, a growing year for our young players. Next year was the year in which we would get a WR for Tannehill and an upgrade at the safety position. Next year was supposed to be the year in which we became competitive....then we go and do something like this....we pass the eye test.....if you don't look at the score, we look good; we look like a competitive football team. Sure there are some mistakes; some untimely turnovers but from an overall game standpoint we look competitive.
Mostly because I don't want this to be a purely subjective post I wanted to post a couple quick stats as well. So far this season we have put up 86 points through 4 games...something that took us 6 games to do last year. Not only that but we have done so against arguably some of the best/better defenses in the league. If we stay on our current average points per game we will score 344 points for the season. An average of 3.9 points more per game than last year; if we had those points last year we would have won 4 additional games. Interestingly enough our downfall this year is what was our strength was during the fist pumping Sparano-era....our FG kicker(or lack thereof).
But more importantly than stats I no longer have to "know" on 3rd and 10 that a punt quickly ensues....I can feel as if we have a chance to convert the down. I no longer have to settle for being happy we made it to FG range and/or feel as if scoring a TD is like climbing Mount Everest. We have been able to move the ball up and down the field and puts some points up on some very good defenses. We have continued to play dominant defense. If you did not know the score of some of our games you would say that we were definitely the better more dominant team. We pass the "eye test". Unfortunately looks aren't everything.....we now need to find a way to win.
