Would You Want Peyton Manning?

I think it's incredibly likely that the Colts let Manning go by March 8th (especially now that Polian is gone), where he would be owed $28 Million. If they were to trade him, the cap hit would be something like $18 Million after that? I guess he could restructure the contract to get traded...but why would you want to help them and hurt the team you would be traded to? Makes no sense. And I doubt he'll retire, he even wanted to try and get back and play at the end of this season. Seeing Brett Favre make it oh so close to the SB at age 40, I wouldn't want to retire at 35.

There is a very good chance he becomes a free agent, and I would take the chance on him being healthy. Because if he does get healthy, how could you not want him? We're not getting Luck or RG3, and nobody is going to convince me to trust that Jeff Ireland finds the next Aaron Rodgers. Manning would at least give us a hope of a possible super bowl in the next 3 or 4 years. Take the gamble that he would be healthy...because it's not like we have some superstar waiting in the wings, and don't bring up Matt Moore unless you like kicking Field Goals in the red zone against top teams.

You know Ross would go after him without a doubt if he becomes a free agent. It would fill up every seat and vault the Dolphins into the headlines everywhere, which is something he enjoys. And just imagine how great it would be when the Dolphins go into Indy to play the Colts & Andrew Luck.

I could see the Dolphins, Redskins and maybe Seahawks going for him...maybe with a chance of the 49ers who have a lot in place.

YES! I was on the radio, the other day.

They brought this same topic and I said yes.
Cause a team like Miami, who is only a QB away from being elite can go all the way.
Add in a Elite Qb with a stout defense.
Bam you have a automatic SB contender.
We went 7-9 with below avg Qbs.
Throw in a Manning easily 16-0 or 14-2 with our program.
Indy is 2-14 without Manning.
I’m all for it.

LOL I don't know that we go 16-0 but we would for sure be a hell of a lot better.

Providing that Manning is the Manning of old.

Haha, I'd expect Miami to go 10-6 or 11-5 with a *healthy* Manning

Maybe 12-4…but that hasn’t happened since 1990, so I will never predict the Dolphins to go above 11-5 until they actually do it.

We would win the division no doubt

49ers are keeping A Smith. Washington would be a contender but if I was a QB wanting to make a SB run then Miami would be the only place to go. If we get Manning in FA, get Blackmon and light up the scoreboard. If that doesn’t fill the seats I don’t know what will.

What happens when that all out blitz sends him back to the surgeon?

Shall we go back to Moore and end up needing that franchise QB again?

If I was Payton Manning

Firat I would get nude in a bathtub filled with cash and rub it all over myself.

After that, I would have to think pretty hard about putting myself behind Marc Colombo. The Dolphins would need to give me some kind of guarantee that the oline wouldn’t result in my death.

For the record I want RG3

Im just saying, this would be an ideal spot for him if we wanted him.

by NFG660cc on Jan 3, 2012 6:04 PM EST reply actions

And I know we all want a young QB who will be here for 15 years...

But we’ve been wanting that since the late 90s when everyone knew Marino was nearing the end.

And we’re still looking to this very day. So factor that in…even if Manning retired after 3 years it would be worth it. We would actually be relevant again.

I won’t get my hopes up for getting a healthy Peyton in a Dolphins jersey…but I think it’s probably around a 20% chance of it happening. Don’t lie, you would love the idea of him going against Brady twice and going into Indianapolis on Sunday Night Football ready to kick some @$$.

If Manning comes to South Beach

Miami will lose no more than 4 games. I got money on that. Manning would analyze tape all summer and he’d make Marshall elite as ever and Bess and/or Fasano would become probowlers. Oh and he’d use Bush like a toy. You’d see some crazy stuff. I personally think this is the best option.

Haters gon' hate...

by TAYDIGGA on Jan 3, 2012 6:45 PM EST reply actions

On a serious note

If he is truly healthy, it might be our best option. I would have said no if we were higher in the draft, but being where we are it might cost too much to move up. But everyone’s definition of too much is different- personally I’d be willing to give up a LOT for RGIII or Luck, but you can’t give up so much that you can’t surround them with enough.

Tough calls to be made for sure. Having Peyton with Moore as a backup is a legitimate setup.

by Fuhbawl on Jan 3, 2012 6:55 PM EST reply actions

If Manning is healthy and he gets released, then he'll be in Miami. Here's why:

Look at all the teams that could use a QB: Jacksonville, Cleveland, Minnesota, Washington, Miami, New York, San Francisco, Arizona, Seattle, Denver, Kansas City

Here are the places Manning just will not play: Minnesota, Jacksonville, Cleveland

Places that don’t have the money: New York, Arizona

That leaves Washington, Miami, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, Kansas City

What is Manning interested in? He wants to win games and cement a legacy. He’s not in it for the money anymore. He wants to win another SB or 2 and get deeper into the record books.

So that rules out Denver and Kansas City as they aren’t that good. Seattle and San Francisco are good ideas, but Manning is an east coast guy and he doesn’t want his legacy to be measured with Montana in SF. Seattle is just too far away.

So that leaves Washington and Miami. Washington can throw all kinds of money at him, but they aren’t even close to being good. Their O-line is in shambles and they have very few playmakers.

Miami on the other hand… they have a great LT, a solid running game, great weapons for him to throw to, and a good defense. Since he’s always being compared to Brady, what better way to enhance his legacy than facing Brady twice a year. If he wins a SB or two in Miami, he will be a HUGE hero to the fan base and the city. It gives Ross his marquee QB to bring in fans and it gives Ireland a chance to build a solid team threw the draft AND look for a QB-of-the-future to groom behind Manning.

When you look at the total picture, Miami makes the MOST sense from Manning’s perspective.

I agree but not so confidant he wouldn't go to SF

I guess I don’t put much stock into how much geography plays into a decision like that. If he wants to make it to a SB right away, I think SF is closer. I hope you’re right, but that’s just my opinion.

NO MORE BACKUPS!!

by phinsphan85 on Jan 3, 2012 8:06 PM EST up reply actions

That's more of the legacy thing

If he went there, he just another in the line of Montana and Young. He comes to Miami and wins a title or two, his legacy grows by leaps and bounds. If he chose SF over Miami, everyone would say “He did that because he didn’t want to face Brady twice a year”. Manning has the money, he’s all about the legacy now. He’ll build it more in Miami.

I wouldn't say that

If this team can keep this level of play for 2 more years then I would say that. SF could be 1 season wonders and fade off. Alex Smith is not the answer and that is obvious to SF.

Peyton Manning at age 35...

with 3 neck surgeries in the last 12 months. Do not want. Thanks anyway.

If you wanna go and draft a QB, and trade up for RGIII, fine. I don’t want a QB past his prime with injury concerns. Remember the fact that Indy protected him very well, and he was barely touched for the last 10 or 11 seasons. To expand on this…he’s 35. How many seasons does he have left, 2 or 3? No thanks. No more band-aid’s at QB for this franchise. Either do whatever needs to be done to trade up and draft RGIII, or let Moore have the reigns for next season and draft Barkley or Landry Jones.

Imagine we get him in there, he gets drilled and put into retirement.

That would suck.

by Fuhbawl on Jan 3, 2012 7:20 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry to rain on this great idea, but I'm also thinking NO.

I think there is a pretty good likely hood he will never be the same, and if he isn’t, if he gets drilled… he is getting old for a QB and we need young. We need someone who will be our guy for many, many years to come and that isn’t Manning.

Ya’ll are thinking of the old Manning, and I’m not sure if we will ever see that again. Put it this way, the Colts are ready to let him go… We shouldn’t be so quick to pick him up.

by JImbo111 on Jan 3, 2012 7:34 PM EST reply actions

We draft manning

Then we trade our 1st rounder for a mid round pick and get a 1st round pick for next year. With 2 1st round picks we could be in a good position for Barkley next year. Barkley can sit behind manning for a year or two depending on how Manning looks when he comes back (if hes back to manning). What would be better than Manning teaching barkley for 2 years? Look what it did for rodgers and manning>favre.

by kingmz on Jan 3, 2012 11:31 PM EST up reply actions

YES

I still would try to draft RG III though. Get our QB for the present AND future.. That way we also would be set if Manning gets whacked. I love this idea.. and if he ISN’T released, who knows, perhaps Luck would ask for a trade or something.

I would be afraid of the big hit, but that is with any player “AP” for one. I would take the chance whats the worst thing that could happen, we suck again. We have pretty much done that for the last 15 years give or take.Plus he would sell tickets and thats what Ross is all about. Would he be a stop gap …yup.. but a damn good one!! Thing about him coming back is the great unknown,….
Remember CP10,….his shoulder blew up on the 1st play. Now I could be wrong, and he could come back and pick right up where he left off, but I’m skeptical. If they’re going to target a FA QB, I would much rather go after Flynn in GB.

by Ohiofinfan4life on Jan 3, 2012 9:28 PM EST reply actions

Agree, even Manning is a "retread."

What’s the worse that could happen… We could give up a lot of draft pics for years to come and he could suck… That could put us in the hole for 2-3-4 years…

by JImbo111 on Jan 3, 2012 10:01 PM EST up reply actions

This is if he's a Free Agent, which is most likely

So we wouldn’t be giving up any draft picks, only Ross’ money.

by hbkDolphins on Jan 3, 2012 10:30 PM EST up reply actions

The colts have to pay him a bonus of 28 mil

IF the colts don’t release manning before march then they would have to pay him the 28 mil and plus 6 mil yearly salary. So then if a team wanted to trade for him the colts would want a lot more than they can get due to them paying 28 mil to keep him. Manning has question marks and what team would give up a small ransom for manning? He will get released and if we can pick him up for 3-4 mil a year I would be on board.

by kingmz on Jan 3, 2012 11:35 PM EST up reply actions

Exactly, we would never trade for him and lose draft picks

It wouldn’t hurt us at all. We can still draft a young QB and we still have Matt Moore on the roster.

If Manning were to be healthy? He would probably take us to the playoffs and win comeback player of the year. If not? Ross lost some money, but at least he tried. It would not hurt us to try.

by hbkDolphins on Jan 4, 2012 2:20 PM EST up reply actions

Could you imagine how many primetime games we’d get?
You damn well know it would make us a play-off caliber team!

For the short term fun: hell yes.

by DolfinPhan on Jan 3, 2012 11:33 PM EST reply actions

If we can pick him up via free agency, I'd go for it.

I would not trade for him. I would also draft a QB somewhere in the early middle rounds if the value was there. Manning is not a “retread”. He’s a first ballot HOFer who has taken little abuse for a 36 y/o NFLer. No reason we couldn’t get 4 quality seasons out of him. Anyone who can remember the last time we had a string of 4 years continuity at the QB position, is also old enough to know a fan is not guaranteed a SB in their lifetime. Manning can come here and make us INSTANT SB contenders.

Of course, if the health is still there.

Even if he has lost a little arm strength, he will make up for it with his “cerebral-ness” (pretty sure that’s not correct). I know you’re not a huge fan of trading up if the price is astronomical, I get that. Personally, I’d like to trade up and get our own guy, but if it’s 4 firsts or more than 4 combined picks….I’m out. Peyton would be my 1b. choice.

Like you said I’d like to see him continue as well, as long as it’s not for the Jets. I’d much rather him own all the passing records instead of Fav-re. Actually, now that I’m thinking about it….If there is ANY chance of the Jets persuing Manning I feel we ABSOLUTELY have to block them. Don’t care how much it costs. That’d essentially guarantee no playoffs for at least 4 more years, no more Ireland, and quite possibly another coaching change.

Damn, I love the offseason! This is my soap opera.

Sign Manning (provided he is healthy) for 2 or 3 years, trade our first rounder to a team that you have some belief will

suck next year for their first in 2013 and whatever else you can get (this does not matter as getting the high pick next year is the primary goal here), then use that pick along with our own 2013 pick to trade up can grab Barkley. Wost case we have to trade both picks to get him but still a bargain IMO. Best case the team you traded with totally sucks and you only have to use their pick to select Barkley giving you two first rounders and an epic draft!

I want to see this FO start to use thinking that address the future, not just the right now ala the Pats. Sure they have some weak spots but they are right where they have been for some time. At the top of the NFL.

The best time to draft a QB is when you don’t need one. Just like when we drafted Marino.

He fell down to us and we grabbed him. Green Bay had Rogers sit on the bench for 3 years before he got his chance.

But if Manning falls into our lap, then hell yea! Then use the 1st rounder on an OLB/OT, then trade up with our 2nd pick to nab Dwayne Allen, or use our 2nd rounder on Coby Fleener.
