Worst idea ever

Saw an article today that the dolphins want to cover up parts of the stadium so they can have more sellouts. While it sounds like a good idea "more sellouts" means the game will be on TV. As a business strategy it's too short sighted.

When I was a boy some of my greatest times were going to the Dolphin games with my dad. Those memories were what made me a life long super fan instead of the casual fan. The kind of fan that gets NFL Sunday ticket because he lives in Michigan, the kind that has all sorts of dolphins stuff and the kind of fan that tries to go to home game every year even though I live in Michigan now.

Star-divide

But buying just 2 season tickets was a financial burden every year for my father. Then you add parking, soda, hot dog and some popcord and what was already expensive is impossible for you average family. Even the family seats now are over $20 a ticket and parking is $25. You add a $5 soda and $5 hot dog and all of a sudden your talking about a small large fortune and unhappy parents because most parents will do whatever they can to make their children happy. They don't want to be in a position where they have to tell their kids "no we can afford that".

So how do we fill up those seats. Easy... offer a real familly pack in an ancohol free section of the stadium (all those empty seats). You offer 4 tickets, parking, 4 sodas, 4 hot dogs and 4 popcorn. And I would add a free pin or something for the kids. You offer all that for $100. Of course you can have 2, 3 and 5 person packages but you get the picture. You start building the future customers and fill up the stadium with great fans.

I though of making it minimum 2 games

So we don’t fill up those seats with visiting team fans but it would defeat the purpose of helping people go that otherwise would not be able to.

Sure is alot better to have fans in those seats paying somethin instead of putting up tarps.

It's a good idea

But, the team needs to make sure it’s on TV. First, it does help the team in the long run if fans within 75 miles of the stadium can see the game. Second, the state legislature is looking at requiring a team to buy any unused tickets to ensure a blackout each week. While Stephen Ross did that last year, do you really think he wants to do that every single week?

The team has talked about changing the stadium for years. The want to bring the stands closer to the field – which is the right move. It’s just about finding the money right now.

We currently have the 7th largest stadium in the NFL (75,192 capacity). If you got rid of 10,000 seats, it would still be larger than 7 stadiums. 10,000 is a huge number, but could be the target.

Plus, if they just tarp the seats, it’s not like if demand goes up, they can’t bring the seats back into play.

Demand is based on two things

Product quality and price. I think if you could go to the game for $25 A head all included. The stadium would fill up at its current size. But as it stands now you’re paying $50 a ticket, $25 for parking, $15 for food and a drink.

That’s too much for most families

Unless I am mistaken they would have to get special permission from the NFL in order to do that (Since they had already petitioned to reduce their ticket offerings to a lesser level for blackout purposes) and they would only do so if a sellout was imminent early in the week. Those factors aren’t likely to be predictable during the week, but the home games against the Patriots and Jets should be easy to get the seating maximized if the NFL plays along.

I don’t think it will matter this year because if we are successful in 2012 we can open things back up for 2013.

Yeah

They won’t open them up on a week to week basis….but if things are looking like every game is a sell out, they could then petition the league for the seats.

Like I said, We can open things back up in 2013. There’s no way we will have every game in 2012 looking like a sellout. If the economy was better, maybe with the excitement of the new staff but people are still hurting financially to where even $37 + $20 Parking (Isn’t $25 now?) is too much.

Draft a first round QB and then build around him.

Great Idea, Sdelinois

Winning, more player/community interaction especially with kids should make filling those seats with ease. Add in the buy 1 get 1 free with the hotdogs and sodas, suddenly we are at full capacity.

Get the best man to clear every hurdle that stand in the Dolphins way, go RG3.
RG3, the new Transformer of the future.

I would take my family if they lowered the price a bit...

It is a long drive from Orlando(athough not anything like what OFF4L has to deal with) and my kids aren’t quite at the age where they can appreciate football fully yet… but if they lowered the price I would bring them.

We had [Brady] down… but we didn’t kick him. We helped him up and gave him a PowerPuff Girls band-aid for his knee. What exactly did you expect would happen when we did that?

by Jason Scott_90 on Jan 29, 2012 3:22 PM EST reply actions

I would go to 2 games a year for that price...maybe 3....

I have a 5 kids… that is 7… plus I might convince extended family to come to for that price….

Don't they already run those deals?

Every year I get emails about 2 tickets two drinks two hotdogs for $99? I know that’s less than 4 or 5. Also they said in the same article that one of the reasons they would tarp off the extra seats is for the plan to add more seats closer to the sideline, so as to not make the stadium bigger thus being even harder to sell out.

by phinhead on Jan 30, 2012 1:58 PM EST reply actions

Great idea...

Another way to fill the seats is to put a winning product out on the field. Until Ross can do that, he should continue to waste his own money by buying the seats, or offer a reasonable package like you suggested.

Unfortunately, NFL Football is as much a business, as it is entertainment, as it is a competitive game.

I love this idea

I am gettting older everyday like most of you and am also developing a bit of scial phobia becuase of how crazy people can get. I would love a more sheltered section of the stadium were people can just watch the game without some drunk asshole cussing making everyone uncomfortable in front of the kids.

Dodger staduim has the bleacher seats that do not serve alcohol but do come with all you can eat concession foods and drinks. Families typically enjoy that area, but lately they have been dominated by mexican families who dont like to share their area.

So i like the upper deck idea. On one hand, i would like it to be affordable for fans to go, but also cost a little more to keep peopel who lack etiquette and control from ruining our times.

a wise man once said..."My cats breath smells like cat food"
My love for THE MIAMI DOLPHINS is unconditional...period!
Win for pride, Win for us fans!
God I hope we can knock the Jets out of the playoffs, I couldn't imagine despising a team and fan base more.

Go Dolphins!
