This would free up Mike Sherman for Miami' s Offensive Coordinator position. Sherman is in Miami visiting with the Dolphins this morning. It looks like our staff is nearly assembled.

Hope

Flynn should be on the way with him in a perfect world. lol

In a perfect world we end up with both Tannehill and Flynn

The two QB’s with ties to J.P. And Sherman

by JP 23 on Jan 26, 2012 11:07 AM EST via mobile reply actions

Yes

I would imagine the Tannehill speculation of us drafting him is because he has the potemtial to be as good or better than RG3 and Luck. Especially, with the chemistry of coming along into the NFL with a coach you are comfortable with. Every draft pick has potential in some way shape or form.
I just happen to think Flynn Flynn Is the smartest choice!
It’s like drafting a rookie with NFL experience.
Plus, he already know Philbin’s system so there should not be any learning curve.
He clearly has confidence and should make a difference with all the weapons the Dolphins have.
He did beyond phenomenal in his couple of starts with Green Bay.
Sure he had one of the best teams around him but he will have just about that in Miami.
Younger than Manning and more experienced than RG3.
If he does end up being a bust the QB back pool in the futures is said to be seemingly brighter than this years.
Besides with picking up Flynn we get to boister up our SECONDARY which showed it’s backside multiple times last year!
Not to mention getting the O-line nice and solid all the way around.
I personally would like to see another big fast wide receiver in the mix too.

by Adewphin on Jan 26, 2012 6:32 PM EST up reply actions

Dont know a whole lot about Tannehill

(other than he played for Sherman) Does he even have anywhere close to the potential that Luck or RGIII are said to have>

by jdelsandro on Jan 26, 2012 11:27 AM EST reply actions

No, but he won’t cost anywhere close to the cost required to acquire either of those two.

Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.

by Jevant on Jan 26, 2012 11:27 AM EST up reply actions

well hopefully he would be a capable backup in the mold of say a Matt Flynn or Kevin Kolb

And if we have a offensive minded coach like Philbin, and his previous coach Sherman.. than I guess we could do worse.. At least they already know his weaknesses and strengths

by jdelsandro on Jan 26, 2012 11:32 AM EST up reply actions

Soooo, the Dolphins drafting Tannehill are drating a back-up?

Wow….

They would have

already taken care of the “starter” role in free agency, so yes, you keep drafting QB’s until you find one, because then you can flip the backups (w/potential) for picks before their contract is up.

by phinhead on Jan 26, 2012 12:03 PM EST up reply actions

I am a believer in taking a QB every year.

Maybe not in the second (or late first) where Tannehlil will fall this year (although, if Miami lands Manning, I would love the Tannehill pick), but I think you take a QB every year, just in case.

After all – Brady was a 6th. You never know for sure.

agreed :)

You never know I believe Flynn was a 7th rounder, but i could be mistaken

by jdelsandro on Jan 26, 2012 12:17 PM EST up reply actions

A capable backup....

That will become a starter in a year or two… Much like Rivers did under Brees, or Rodgers under Farve… not drafting him just to be a backup for his career.

by jdelsandro on Jan 26, 2012 12:03 PM EST up reply actions

Tannehill has a lot of talent

But he converted to QB and as a prospect, is pretty raw. He’s not one of those QBs I’d put out there to start from day one, but can eventually be a very good QB.

I don't understand where everyone is coming from

talking so negatively about Tannehill. He’s got more potential and upside than Luck in my opinion and given that he won’t be thrown in as a starter right away and will sit a few years learning, I think his skills will translate to the next level better than RGIII’s will. Tannehill has got the size at a little over 6’4" and he has all the intangibles that you look for in a quarterback. He has a stronger arm than Luck and is far more mobile. His mobility is almost as good as RGIII’s. The area he needs to develop in is his pocket presence and his reads. If he can advance to the next level as a pocket passer, I think he could surpass Luck in a few years.

Mike Mayok ranks Tannehill as the 3rd best QB in the draft...says he has

a ton of upside & has that “it” factor…just a little raw due to lack of playing experience!

I've said it before & and now there is talk of this.....how awesome would it be to

go get Manning + draft Tannehill to learn under the best for 2-3 years…not looking like as much a pipe dream as it used to!
That is if Manning can continue to play!
Option 2- Flynn…I’d be happy either way!

by MassFinFan65 on Jan 26, 2012 11:40 AM EST reply actions

I have a feeling that Miami will try to trade for Peyton rather than let him hit FA...

The reason is they obviously want him, and the Colts could take a 2nd this year, and a conditional pick. That would be cheap for Manning. If he hits the open market, with our limited cap space, the price tag increases significantly with all the teams potentially interested. Gotta give it to Ross-he’s all in this year.

Yeah it would be sensible.

Dolphins did the same with Reggie. Saints were gonna cut him.

But then they inherit

the 28 million bonus and his current contract.

by phinhead on Jan 26, 2012 12:04 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah - that $28 million is killer.

He’s only supposed to make about $7.4 million this year – other than the $28 million bonus.

He has an $8.4 million in 2013, $9.4 million in 2014, and $10.4 million in 2015.

He would take less

than if he were completely healthy, but not much less than market value for a QB of his pedigree.

by phinhead on Jan 26, 2012 12:25 PM EST up reply actions

I think he gets realeased....

Then takes a 1 year contract of 7-10 mil with a MUCH less enthusiastic bonus… its not as big of risk being one year.. and with the neck injury its mor a possibility.. And if he proves healthy for the majority of this year they can give him a 2-3 year extension. Although, another team may be willing to take more risk and pay more for his services (Washington, or the Niners)… Should be interesting

by jdelsandro on Jan 26, 2012 12:29 PM EST up reply actions

Not sure how it works but maybe they agree to restructure the contract...who knows??

by FinzD54 on Jan 26, 2012 12:09 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

But

then he would just be negotiating the contract he would want on the open market, so if they can’t come to an agreement, then you have his original contract plus bonus and a disgruntled player and you are out a draft pick.

by phinhead on Jan 26, 2012 12:24 PM EST up reply actions

No...

The Colts would inherit the $28 million bonus with their cap hit. That is why they won’t trade him. He’ll either play for Indy in 2012 or they’ll refuse the bonus, making him a FA.

The Colts and Dolphins can’t negotiate a trade before the bonus because the bonus is due before the league year begins, which is the date when teams are allowed to trade players.

I'm cool with not trading for him.

They won’t truly be able to rebuild until Manning is off their Roster. If Manning is off their roster, they’ll have a real shot at some decent free agents.

Sherman is in Miami right now talking about the OC position. If Schiano finalizes a deal with TB for their HC position, Sherman will be announced as Miami’s OC within a week.

Is he a conservative run it down your throat kinda guy or is he a pass happy

by HeatPhinat1c on Jan 26, 2012 12:51 PM EST reply actions

He was the Packers HC from 2000-2005 while Farve was QB

Never conservative with Farve + they made the playoffs 4 of those 5 years & division champs 3 of those 5.

by MassFinFan65 on Jan 26, 2012 1:15 PM EST up reply actions

Idk either... he sounds like a balanced type coach. Balanced = Undecided? lol
An offensive-minded coach, Sherman led the Packers to break franchise records for rushing in 2003 and passing in 2004. In 2003, Packers quarterback Brett Favre led the NFL in touchdown passes, in addition to setting a franchise record for rushing yardage. The 2003 team also gained a total of 442 points, which is the fourth most in franchise history (560 in 2011, 461 in 2009, 456 in 1996, when the team won the Super Bowl).

having Philbin and Sherman gives us a HUGE advantage. Like it or not Flynn and Tannehill are our most plausible options. having both of their coaches lets us know if they have the potential to be franchise qbs.
