Miami Needs To Make Moves In FA

If Ross wants to bring fans to the stands he needs to stitch some big names on some Aqua and Orange jerseys. To do this Miami needs to be relentless in FA and bid on everything that looks tempting. Our basic need has obviously been QB. Hopefully with the Packer's OCas our head coach we can possibly sway Flynn, the only decent FA besides Brees, into Miami to start or at least to compete against Moore. I have a feeling Miami won't find their QB answers in FA but I'll take Flynn over Henne anytime.

Another area Miami needs to focus on is the safety position. There is a lot of talk about LaRonLandry and how Miami should go after him. However Landry is injury prone and missed fifteen games in two years! That's almost a whole season! We can't fill our cap room with injury prone players. What the dolphins need to do is acquire Courtland Finnegan. Ross needs to fly him down and show him a good time in SoBe. Finnegan would lock down out secondary and allow Smith to move to safety. Supposedly Finnegan already sold his house in Texas and is not afraid to walk away from the Titans organization.

On the O-line the Dolphins need to go after both Carl Nicks of the Saints and Ben Grubbs of the Ravens. I would choose Grubbs over Nicks, he is a fast guard that helped Ray Rice to have the season he had. Ross needs to throw money in both their directions and hope for a bite. These are the three players that I feel would be the best fit as well as the most plausible. If Manning becomes free and is healthy of course we should take him.Texans will not let Mario Williams out of their locker room and Avril will be on the top of Detroit's list this off season. But it think if we focus on Finnegan and his eagerness to leave Texas; welcome Flynn in with Philbin and attain either Nicks or Grubbs then the Dolphins would be sitting pretty next season. As for Soliai, let him go. The Fins can't afford to pay a nose tackle big bucks who had ZERO sacks and only a few tackles for loss. I say build the rest in the Draft. If we get Grubbs or Nicks we could use our first round pick on Courtney Upshaw or a young DT. Let me know what you think the Dolphins should do this FA.

Some good ideas

I personally don’t like Finnegan. He’s not what we need. I think he is going to follow his old coach Jeff Fisher to St. Louis anyways. I’d rather keep Vontae and Sean at CB and pick up a big time safety. We can cut Bell (saves 4 million) and go get Michael Griffin and put him at FS. Laron would be nice but with the injuries he is a risk. Griffin at FS and Clemons/Jones at SS for one more year (Draft Ray Ray Armstrong in 2013) would be good in the secondary.

I like the idea of Nicks or Grubbs. If we sign one of them and put Richie at RG and draft a RT in rounds 2, 3, or 4 to battle Murtha our line will be awesome next year. I personally don’t care which one but I think Nicks will come here because the Saints don’t have the cap to sign all their FAs and Reggie will hit up his boy.

I like the idea of Soliai walking because he will command anywhere from 6-9 million per year. Last year we played 52% of our snaps with 4 d-lineman and Ireland has been thinking of switching to a 4-3. With Kevin Coyle maybe coming from Cincy to be our DC we will probably switch to 4-3. If we do, DE becomes a huge need and I would look to trade back and draft Melvin Ingram, who is a pass rushing beast.

I also think Flynn will come here. I would also look at picking up a WR in FA since this class is so stacked. Someone like Robert Meachem or even Reggie Wayne would be nice for a couple years until we draft a WR in a couple of years.

I personally don’t like Upshaw. We need a pass-rusher because we have the run stuffer in Misi. Upshaw reminds me a lot of Misi, but just on one of the greatest college defenses because he was surrounded by talent. I want someone who is more of a sack specialist like Mercilus or Ingram or I would even settle for Curry in round 2.

Franchise Soliai!

Why should Miami let Soliai walk without getting something for him? He just made the pro bowl! Imagine if Miami got a first or second round pick for soliai!

by tpl on Jan 25, 2012 7:34 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Because if Miami is going to do that, they'll have little room in free agency when most of those big targets you want will be gone.

And if he refuses to sign the tender, Miami can’t trade him.

Why no mention of QC?

How about this for a front seven:

Misi—Dansby—Burnett——-
Coples—Odrick—Starks—Wake

Not bad?

by DolfanVince86 on Jan 25, 2012 12:17 PM EST up reply actions

Oh

BTW if our front office is smart we retain Kendall Langford and Tony McDaniel. Our D line would consist of Starks, Odrick, Langford McDaniel and possibly even Merling…

by DolfanVince86 on Jan 25, 2012 12:19 PM EST up reply actions

Not bad at all, except it seems like Dansby may be on the outside and Misi on the inside.

I don’t think we’d retain Langford, but McDaniel is already under contract.

Dansby on the outside.

Like he was in Arizona. The question is… is Misi good enough to play inside?

by DolfanVince86 on Jan 25, 2012 12:27 PM EST up reply actions

I don't know and frankly, that surprised me a little bit.

If we go into a 4-3, I would not be surprised for Miami to make a low-key, economical move for a 4-3 MLB and get someone like Joe Mays.

If Ireland were to trade down

and acquire picks I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back into the late 1st round or VERY early 2nd round and snagged Sean Spence to anchor the middle LB position.

If we don't retain Lanford

That means we’re just letting another pro bowl quality (yeah I said it) player go without gaining anything in return. We need to either sign him and play him at DT or franchise him and trade him or SOMETHING.

Are we really going to let two YOUNG blue chip defensive linemen leave in free agency????

by DolfanVince86 on Jan 25, 2012 12:28 PM EST up reply actions

It's part of the game.

Langford is a great 3-4 DE and frankly, even if we stayed in the 3-4, I’m not so sure he’d return. I don’t know if he’d do as good as a 4-3 DT, though it is possible. Miami simply can’t place to tag on him and trade him because it would limit them in FA. You tag Langford and try to sign him, Miami would be at or near the cap for the first several days, potentially weeks. A lot of the free agents, especially some of the top targets fans want, could be gone by the time a trade is completed.

Funny thought though. I’m surprised nobody has started a rumor saying that GB will franchise Flynn and Miami will franchise Langford and then trade both of them to each other…

Can we start that rumor right now?

I’d rather commit money to Langford and Soliai and figure out a way to get a return on them. Notice how Belichick is always making trades and getting value in return. Free agency is part of the game, but the keyword is game. Miami needs to play it instead of finding a small school stud (Langford) and developing a monster in Soliai, only to let them sign with the Patriots.

That’s why they should have gotten deals done with both of them this year, or traded them during the season.

by DolfanVince86 on Jan 25, 2012 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

Well, if Miami converts to a 4-3 as expected...

The resigning of Soliai would’ve been a poor move. They also carried little trade value in the season because they were in the final year of their contracts. We wouldn’t get what you’d want for them anyways.

nicks and grubbs would be a nice combo

esp with long and pouncey and if we get reiff sounds like a dominant o-line to me if reggie can get 1000 yards with what we had he might break the record with that type of line

Don’t assume Finnegan is leaving the Titans because he sold his house in Texas. After tall, the Titans play in Tennessee.

Nicks and Grubbs

I suspect Miami will be active in free agency. Anyone Miami can sign saves a draft pick. Miami will definately attempt to sign Peyton Manning. he’ll fill seats and that will make ross happy. It will also be interesting to see how many green bay players and coaches Philbin brings with him.

idk where people keep thinking we are going to get to money to make these big free agent decisions

or why the players would even want to come here

Not that we'll be huge spenders in FA (we could get the money)

But why would players not come here? Because Miami was 6-10 and has a new coach? How in the world did we land Cam Wake over NYG when they were prior SB winners? Why did Bush agree to accept a deal with Miami (Miami wouldn’t have traded for Bush under his contract with NO and Bush would’ve been a FA)? Why did Karlos Dansby agree to come to Miami? Or Randy Starks? Players will come.

i disagree not because im a hater or anything, but because im trying to be realistic...

but i really dont see why great players coming from great teams would be attracted to Miami right now. Each Miami signing had its unique situation. Cam came from the CFL, he was looking for an oportunity, not the best team. Bush was looking for a chance to be the #1 back and Miami had no rbs. Dansby went for the money. Starks wasnt really a great player before he signed with us, he became very good once he got here. All these situation are different IMO than say a Manning, Nicks, or Grubbs. All those guys have been great players on elite teams, so I would think winning is very important to them (especially Manning). While we are an up and coming team, I dont think those type of elite players would see us as contenders right now. I dont see us attracting great players this offseason, but a year or two from now, we could become a destination players want to come to. Both for the winning atmosphere and the location. Again, im just trying to be realistic not a pessimist…

And now people may come to Miami...

To be the starting QB (Flynn/Manning), starting Guard (Scott), or starting FS (Landry). Dansby could’ve been a started on most teams he went to and Wake had an offer from the Giants, but chose Miami.

What type of team is going to after Peyton Manning? The Cardinals and Redskins. Maybe the 49ers. Are the Cardinals and Redskins really a better situation for him? Really? The 49ers, that could always be a possibility as well and they are in a better situation. Miami is not considered a terrible place to be and most don’t see the team as much in disarray as you seem to.

Money and playing time speaks. Miami can offer both for several of those players. They’re also just as much as a contender as most teams that would pursue some of these players.

We do not need his attitude or mediocre play replace Sean Smith. To me, it is ridiculous to give up on Sean Smith at this time. The dude is good. The dude is young. The dude will earn his position.

Peyton makes us a INSTANT challenge to the pats. I say we also draft Foles as a back up to sit a couple of years and learn
