He obviously didn't get in by name recognition.

Perhaps players and coaches liked what he did?

Soliai isn't even the second best NT in the AFC East let alone the entire AFC.

This sounds more like somebody wanted to drive up Soliai's price tag so we would be less inclined to retain him.

That would require all of the NFL players and coaches to be locked in this conspiracy.

There are already 4 interior linemen ahead of him on the roster

*-Haloti Ngata, Baltimore
*z-Vince Wilfork, New England
Richard Seymour, Oakland
y-Geno Atkins, Cincinnati

Wilfork is out for the Super Bowl, with Atkins replacing him. So, either Ngata, Seymore, or the newly placed Atkins is out with an injury, with the spot falling to Soliai.

Questions from a Chiefs fan

Media has been pumping Brian Daboll as our next OC.. What have you guys thought of him as an OC here?

What happened to Vernon Carey. He had a pretty good season at RT if I remember correctly when you guys won the AFC East that one season. Why is he playing inside?

Finally what’s up with the hate on Soliai here? I know a lot of Chiefs fans want the dude to play NT in KC next season.

by IPWT2009 on Jan 24, 2012 4:37 PM EST reply actions

Daboll is more liked than not I think...

He may not be a bad OC for Kansas City.

For Vernon Carey, he’s playing inside because he’s had knee issues over the years that have slown him down and made him a liability at RT.

As for the hate on Soliai, it’s because he was given the franchise tag and is a FA. If he was working under a 5-year $20 million contract and wasn’t a FA next year, you wouldn’t be hearing about any hate for Soliai.

Daboll actually showed a very good offense for the year.

Some would have liked to have retained him.

Vernon was moved inside cause of his age and dropped skill level.. and no right guard.

Soliai is slightly above average. His best year was his contract year. The team frangised him instead. Now the team is in flux, with which way the defense will set up… 3 – 4 or 4 – 3. His play this year was just that, slightly above average. Myself, I like more than others.

A move on these guys for your team may be less than what you think you’ll get in return.

I mean any upgrade at NT is welcome here

we’re just looking for a solid NT not an out of this world one. Despite what you saw when you played us, our defense is pretty top notch and really caught on at the end of the year, but we’re doing it without the most important part of the 3-4. the NT.

Rather surprised they haven't been pushing the Dontari Poe bandwagon.

Unless they have and I never noticed (haven’t gone to Arrowhead Pride).

Poe is a huge reach at #11

if he is there in the second nobody will object to it. But unless there is a trade down we’ll have to roll with a FA or a later round flyer.

Also I don't think anyone is excited about the prospect of Daboll because he isn't a big name

I am though. I mean he had Chad Penningotn in New York and Miami, Derek Anderson in Cleveland, and Matt Moore here and he ran effective offenses with em. Not too shabby. In all seriousness Thanks for the input. I think I should be a little more well armed to do riot control if the hiring actually happened. haha

Daboll is a great OC...

I have seen him try to outscheme people before though rather than just getting the ball into the hands of the playmakers though, which can be a bad thing at times. Sometimes he tries to get a little cute. Other than that though, he is a great OC.

Vernon Carey has gotten old. He is not able to block the elite speed pash rushers or even get a hand on them as they go by. He is still plenty competent to be a really good Guard in this league. He can easily keep playing at a very high level there for the next 5 years.

Soliai is overrated. I honestly hope someone overpays for him in free agency because it will mean we get more compensatory picks. He is a really big really strong guy. He will fill a hole if you have no one to play NT. But do not think the fact that we payed the guy franchise money instantly turns him into anything more than a big body. He is not elite. He will never be elite. The thing that makes a guy elite on the D-line is instinct and explosiveness. You can not teach either one. He has neither. He got paid like he was elite, but he is not and never will be elite. He can be and is good. He is not and never will be great, much less elite.

We had [Brady] down… but we didn’t kick him. We helped him up and gave him a PowerPuff Girls band-aid for his knee. What exactly did you expect would happen when we did that?

by Jason Scott_90 on Jan 24, 2012 8:07 PM EST up reply actions

the Pro Bowl is a popularity contest...

the players that voted probably dont know much about the NTs in the league.. it was more of a vote for him BECAUSE we placed the franchise tag on him. Antonio Garay is a better NT and he is not in the Pro Bowl

The Pro Bowl is largely a popularity contest because of fans...

I find it odd that you think they named Soliai because they couldn’t name another DT/NT. It’s not like Soliai is the most popular of them out there. He certainly wasn’t chosen because he was on a successful team. The only considerating left is that he used his $12 million franchise tag money to buy off all the NFL players.

its not that odd...

what do you find more likely… players that dont really play against Soliai or play on another team’s defense to know enough to make a decision about who the best NT in the league is… or for players on other teams to know exactly who got what money when you are talking about franchise tags and the biggest deals out there…. does a WR even worry about a NT even if they are playing them?

What I find more likely is...

When it comes to those not-so-glorious positions where you don’t have as much to review on them because the game isn’t focused on them, I’ll take the word of NFL coaches and players over the fans.

Sounds like a Solai clone and can be had in the 3rd apparently, although his stock might rise. He would be great value with our 3rd pick.

by BahamaDolfan on Jan 24, 2012 6:24 PM EST reply actions

AHHHH S%^$

now the dolphins have to pay him more! idk I just dont like to see a NT (Soliai) not stop a running back face to face on a short run to the endzone. I think it happened once or twice in the season. I think it was at least the first or second game.

by BlaqDolfin on Jan 24, 2012 6:32 PM EST reply actions

see my comment above on Soliai...

He is not and never will be elite. He is a good NT, but you don’t pay a NT franchise money when he is not and never will be a game changer at the position. He is not explosive or instinctive. He does not use his hands well and gets caught up in blocks taking not only him, but the LBs behind him completely out of a play. At $12 million/year we need more than a guy that is big and can do ok… we need a guy that scares defenses and their QBs.

We had [Brady] down… but we didn’t kick him. We helped him up and gave him a PowerPuff Girls band-aid for his knee. What exactly did you expect would happen when we did that?

Cograts P.S. enjoy Oakland they will be the ones dumb enough to pay you the money you, unless you take less to play with the Pats

Oh shit that will suck for us, P.S. wake up and understand your not as good as you thing and stay for around 7 a year in my mind is still more than you deserve. I would give you 6, but then you would play to that.

Not sure if Solai was really PB worthy but congratulations nonetheless. I’m sure his agent is VERY appreciative.

Why are you guys surprise Soliai went to the pro bowl?

I been saying all season Soliai is a top 5 NT but some of you don’t really understand Soliai job as a NT. Dolphins are rank 3rd against the run because Soliai get the job done. I hope he don’t return because I really want Jared Odrick to be a starter and Soliai eat up too much salary. I would like to see Dolphins send that money on free agents like Desean Jackson, also would like us to cut Bell and get Laron Laundry

Wish we could sim this season

This ^^^

Dolphins fans are starting to be worse than Philly fans. We have average players – they’re cr*p, we have good players, they’re average… QB does a top 10 job, he’s no better than a backup… RT moves to RG and performs well in first year – he’s toast and on and on and on… If we’re running 3-4 next year and haven’t sold what’s left of he farm to bring Peyton in, I want Solliai here.
