2012 Draft + FA

Hi, this is my first post and I just wanted to give my opinion on what the Dolphins should do this offseason.

Star-divide

Free Agency:

Matt Flynn QB- Yes I know that "he only had two starts against sub-par defenses..." and that free agent QBs has not been our fancy. Despite all of this, he constantly looks for the receiver down the field, and is elusive and younger.

Cliff Avril DE- This guy has more sacks than any player on our D-Line in his career and he's only been in the league for four years. Adding him to a line that picked up speed towards the end of the year could give us a impressive pass rush. Just the thought of him and Wake on the field at the same time makes me wince.

Cortland Finnegan CB- Vontae Davis had a spectacular second half of the season, while Sean Smith played poorly opposite of him. Cortland and Vontae would give us the better CB tandem and possibly Sean Smith can move to S.

2012 NFL Draft

Scenario A and B

A.

Round 1- Trade down with the Bengals for pick #17 and an extra 3rd(+). They get Richardson, we get an extra player(s). Pick #17 Whitney Mercilus, OLB, Illinois- Besides Wake, Starks, and Odrick we have no pass rush. I think he's flying under the radar as the best pass rusher in this draft.

Round 2 Mike Adams, OT, Ohio State- His off-field behavior is a possible redflag, but his play on the field makes you forget about that.

Round 3 Coby Fleener, TE, Stanford- Nice combination of size and speed; mismatch.

Extra 3rd Bacarri Rambo, SS, Georgia- Not another safety from Georgia (Reshad). Unlike Jones, this guy is a playmaker with 8 INT last year.

Round 4 Ryan Broyles, WR, Oklahoma- This guy has 300+ receptions, 131 in 2010, and over 4,000 yds receiving in his career at OU.

Round 5 Case Keenum, QB, Houston- All-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns in the 5th? Many claim him as the "product of the system." If given a chance, could be successful.

Round 6 Derek Wolfe, DT/DE, Cincinnati- The Big East Defensive Player of the Year with 21.5 TFL and 9.5 Sacks. Probably isn't going to last this long.

Round 7 Ryan Miller, OG, Colorado

B.

1st 8-9: Courtney Upshaw, OLB, Alabama
2nd 40-41: Kevin Zeitler, OG Wisconsin
3rd 70-73: Michael Egnew, TE Missouri

4th: 102-104: Antonio Allen, S, South Carolina

5th: Ryan Steed, CB Furman/ or Case Keenum, QB Houston

6th: Jack Crawford, DE, Penn State

7th: Jerry Franklin, LB, Arkansas

This is pretty good

I heard that Avril wants to stay in Detroit, though so that might not happen. And if we get a first round pass rusher we don’t really need him anyways. Cortland Finnegan wouldn’t be bad but I think he wants to start somewhere and I’m fine with giving our corners one more year to prove themselves before we go get another one. You should look at safety instead and look at LaRon Landry to take over for Bell.

I really like the A draft. I had the same idea of trading back with the Bengals. But going from 8 to 17 would warrant more than a 3rd. It’s probably going to be something like a 2nd round pick. I really don’t know much about Mercilus but I heard he beasted it, though he could be a one year wonder. I had us taking Melvin Ingram there so it isn’t too different. I like the tackle pick in the second round. Coby Fleener won’t be available in the 3rd, but could be drafted with our 2nd we got from the Bengals. We should maybe go WR there, though. Safety pick is good in the third.

No way in hell Broyles is available in the 4th this year. He doesn’t get past the top of the second IMO. I personally wouldn’t like drafting Case Keenum but that’s just me. He went against no superior talent on defense and will be in for a rude awakening when his receivers aren’t five yards open all the time. I don’t like the B draft at all and would definitely go with the A. Upshaw isn’t worth the 9th pick.

.Yeah, I doubt Broyles lasts that long, but his injury may play a part in him possibly falling.

i'm not a draft specialist but from a purely common sense point of view agree w/ vafinfan that we need to make an 8-9

pick seriously work for us, and a trade to 17 for a 3rd just won’t carry the freight. we didn’t lose all those games for nothing!

Egnew...

I’ve seen this guy destroy teams, yet he can not block! He is a bum the DL man in front of him and go for a pass TE…If we shore up RT I like it, if we are still having problems Egnew is not the guy

Not bad...

I’m up in the air on Flynn… he entrigues me as competition for Moore, but he’s not even on the same page of what RGIII or Peyton can do and those should be our top priorities, in that order… before we consider a rediculous contract to a 7th round pick who started 2 games.

Love Avril, if he is entrigued by Miami I would love to make it happen.

Corltand is a above average cover corner but he’s a punk, I’d roll with Davis, Smith and Wilson and look to get Michael Griffin, S, in Free Agency instead.

Not crazy about either draft scenario, but A looks not too shabby.

I'm ALL- IN. Do whatever it takes to get Andrew Luck or RGIII to Miami in 2012.

i think rg3 and flynn

have both accomplished absolutely nothing and while i would love manning we need a young qb because we A- dont know how injured manning is B- is known not to help younger qb’s
besides its a moot point because if the giants win peyton is going to the jets but with the cap room the 49ers have that is the sleeper pick of where manning ends up.
i would love to have manning i just have flashbacks of over the hill good qb’s coming here and stinking ala culpepper and trent green

by scholtzc13 on Jan 24, 2012 3:28 PM EST up reply actions

Umm...

A) That is why players have physicals when they sign.
B) Manning isn’t known to help younger QBs? An assumption only because you hear about how he likes to take all the snaps in practice I’m guessing. He’s never been asked to groom a replacement. B-2) The Jets don’t have the cap space to sign Manning and they’d also have to fork over a ton for Sanchez to be a backup. Not happening. Oh, FO also already said Sanchez will start.

Peyton will not go to the Jets AKA the locker room where good players go to die and spoil his legacy...

As much as they want him, he probably has as good as a shot to go to the Giants then the Jets lol

i do find it hard to believe that the bengals will trade with us. I feel like that would only happen if Richardson were to somehow drop that far. While i dont think he should go top 10, many experts feel that richardson will be picked very high.

You're right, I phrased it poorly. I feel these free agency moves will not be the best use of Miami's available capspace.

The draft is stacked with good pass rushing defensive ends so going after one in free agency doesn’t really make sense to me. The phins are only really looking for a reliable nickle and dime back. I Don’t agree with moving Smith or getting rid of him, he is still one of the best corners in the NFL, even if he had a mediocre year. If Peyton Manning is unavailable, and Philbin has confidence in Matt Flynn, shoot away for him at most 10 million a year. If that is unavailable, keep Moore and maybe pickup Nick Foles who I’ve heard scouts describe as being able to make every throw, Philbin is great at developing qbs and could possibly make Foles the qb Miami needs.

by Irishphan on Jan 24, 2012 1:21 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with several things.

There are plenty of quality DEs and if Miami were to move to a 4-3, I would be more than happy to add Coples as our first round pick.

I also agree that we don’t need to move Smith, though I wouldn’t say he’s one of the best CBs or that his year last year was even mediocre. Still, we can live with Smith, but I don’t think he’s necessarily FS material. Not every CB can thrive as a FS. I’d be happy if we had the chance for Janoris Jenkins in the 2nd, but if not, I am fine with Smith. I actually think a top FS like LaRon Landry would benefit Smith a lot. Knowing that you actually have help at the safety position will help most CBs in the NFL.

I’m not big on Peyton if he’s available because of the cap space and am fine with Flynn if Philbin likes him. I am also not opposed to Foles or Tannehill either. Both are good prospects.

We don’t need to fill a whole lot via FA, but I would like to see RG, FS, and maybe WR addressed in FA. We could get some moves where we can spend a total of $10-$15 million on those 3 positions. There aren’t many RTs available in FA and would like one at some point in the draft. I also agree that we can get a DE in the draft as well, but I’m also fine with trying Koa Misi at DE and/or resigning Merling on the cheap for DE. They coud improve a lot when they can just put their hand in the dirt and go.

But of course, RG3 is still my top hope for the draft.

RG3 is a pipe dream for Miami...

Look, with insider info on Flynn coming from our new head couch and Peyton probably becoming a free agent as well as there are upwards of 5-6 teams in the QB hunt. Miami also has more positions to feel in a big way. OLB, FS, TE, RT, RG etc….going all in on RG3 is irresponsible to the over picture for this team. Most likely it will be Flynn (if Philbin thinks he is the man), or Manning (if the owner gets his way) then we draft someone like Tanehill (sp?) or Weadon in the top of the second and address multiple issues this year not just the big glaring one.

Can we just wheel Shula onto the field at the start of ever game being pushed by one of the Miami Cheerleaders? Talk about mixing fear and distraction...

So in terms of responsiblity...

You’d rather offer a 5 year $60 million deal for Kolb than a 5 year $20 million deal for RGIII.

People forget that there’s FA, and you have to think if we truly have TOP 10 QB play, we won’t be too worried about subpar depth at positions like RT and FS because we’ll be scoring 35 points a game under Philbin’s offense.

Getting a franchise QB is our only priority in my opinion… who cares if we have to give up a draft to do so… If not, go after Peyton who is PROVEN.

Agree 100%

An elite QB will mask alot of deficiencies on offense, just ask the colts. Now is time to make that move.

Get the best man to clear every hurdle that stand in the Dolphins way, go RG3.
RG3, the new Transformer of the future.

As it has been said before,

If Philbin thinks Flynn can do it then I am on board. Time will tell. I agree that QB is the priority above all else as well. I just think there are too many options available this year to give up the entire boat. Is the money spent on Manning worth saving two drafts and grooming a QB we draft this year or next worth it, yes, is the similar money worth it if Flynn is the real deal, yes. I don’t know why everyone is sweet on a kid that has NEVER taken an NFL snap versus a guy who has two successful starts…Especially since we have his coach. I would rather throw money away (Ross and company have enough of it) than possibly throw away two drafts (which could lead us to more playoffs and more Superbowls) on just one unproven rookie who isn’t even the top selection. Because clearly having one giant player on your team to mask the deficiencies of the rest worked out soooooo well for Indianapolis when Manning went down. And RG3 isn’t even the number one draft prospect, if you were making the case for Andrew Luck I might be more inclined to agree.

i've shifted away slightly for many reasons from the all-important franchise qb aquisition this year

as a manic necessity, partly b/c it seems the fo itself is now focussed on making the qb key. the old issues are mostly over so let it play out.

When I say one of the best I mean top 20 (for Smith)

He was handcuffed with the coverage system that Miami played this year, but did make a few mental errors. Also, the total lack of pass rush for most of the season also made him look bad. But the year before he only gave up 1 TD catch, which is very impressive.

by Irishphan on Jan 24, 2012 2:27 PM EST up reply actions

I don't even think Smith is top 20.

When you rank statistically in the 70s of all CBs, it’s hard to say you’re top 20.

He was in the top 20 statistically the year before.

And with Miami’s pass rush (or lack thereof for most of this year, the continued use of a zone system that doesn’t suit the players, the constant quality of qb his year, I wouldn’t put to much stock in that.

by Irishphan on Jan 24, 2012 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

He did have a much better year in 2010

But I don’t think it had much to do with the difference in pass rush as our pass rush wasn’t much different this year. As for the quality of Matt Moore this year, I don’t see how that plays a factor.

I was talking about the quality of opposition QB.

Lets just agree that Smith is a solid starter and it’s not worth spending big to replace him (unless its Revis haha)

by Irishphan on Jan 24, 2012 3:09 PM EST up reply actions

Ahh...

Either way, I don’t think the quality of the opposition’s QB was much different and I’m reluctant to call him a solid starter. I wouldn’t mind drafting a CB in the 2nd or even Claiborne in the first. They’d replace him. I’m not huge on signing a high priced CB in FA though and think a solid FS (Landry!) would benefit Smith in having a capable safety protecting him on the backend.

Second round will either be used to draft a qb or trade up for one (sigh)

Smith gets more hate than he deserves, he’s usually a blanket in man coverage. He just had a bad year.

by Irishphan on Jan 24, 2012 3:26 PM EST up reply actions

I'd give him a shot

He’s very athletic and tough, but I question his ability in run support. Plus I think with some of the type of hits he delivers, he’s going to have to adjust his game or take some penalties for hitting a defenseless receiver.

cap space too

i see no way to fit manning without stripping our roster and everyone can see what manning did for the colts with taking no discount they couldnt afford one good player and wayne was in my opinion solid but looked like rice with peyton throwing him the ball.
please ireland stay the course draft and sign young FA i dont think flynn is gonna cost as much as people think and while i dont like him that much he wont handicap our team like manning will

Manning's health concerns will probably make him cap friendly for us..

We can possibly sign a situational contract so if he doesn’t play more than a certain # of games, he doesnt get all this guarenteed money.

Now the catch is...

This issue could go to an arbitrator since Peyton was injured this past year, but that could be considered a “Likely to be earned incentive”, or LBTE, in which case the money would count towards the salary cap in 2012 anyways. If an arbitrator ruled it to be a NLBTE, then the money would be counted towards the 2013 cap.

Not a fan...

those are some big money signings your talking about and idk where we get the money/cap space for them. Also, Avril is a terrible fit in our D being that he is best suited for the 4-3. and idk why you want to give a big contract to a pass rusher and then spend a 1st rounder on another one in addition to the big contract we will soon have to give to Wake. I do love the Broyles pick though…

we will be a 4-3 defense next year

Bell, Carey, and some other veterns will probably be getting cut in order to make room for some FA moves, as much as I hate to see it the NFL is a business after all. And in todays pass happy NFL you can never have enough pass rushers just look at the Giants if you don’t believe me. Wake is in a contract year this season, basically it’s a show me year for him and if he does produce then they will handle next year either with an extension or franchise tag.

REC!

Man this is really good. So far out of all the Draft + FA scenrios this one makes a lot of sense to me. I love the free agency moves and as much as Manning would be awesome to have in Miami I don’t think he would want to come here as of now. It’s true Flynn is a system QB but guess what? we are going to install his system (makes sense to me.) I know alot of people will disagree with me and this really isn’t a knock against him, but frankly I think Brady will go down as the greatest “system” quarterback of all time and it worked out ok for the Patriots.

In my opinion the only small flaw I see is in the 2nd round of the draft. Personally I think when the Colts pick up Luck with the first pick they will be targeting Fleener in the second. Either way I don’t think Fleener is going to fall below the 2nd round especially today with how vaulable flex tightends are in the NFL. Also I see Ireland addressing the right guard spot before the right tackle position, don’t get me wrong he will address both, but Ireland likes Murtha at the RT spot and the RG position doesn’t have a clear starter right now. I love the Rambo selection simply because his last name kicks ass plus I’ve watched this kid alot and he is truly a play maker. One other FA move I see them investigating is the FS Decloud from the Falcons he knows how to make plays and he may come pretty cheap.

Other than that well done my man I really like your predictions.
