The 28 million dollar question
The 2011 season is winding down after another great weekend of the sport we all know, love, and follow with a passion. Championship weekend provided us with two great down to the wire football games which clearly defined the definition of playoff football agreed? we had pretty much every ingredient you wold expect championship weekend to have, Missed field goals at the dying moments of the games, dropped touchdown catches which could have altered the outcome of the game in the opposite direction that its outcome indicates and a toe to toe overtime game which went in to the late hours of Sunday night during a stormy night. Not to mention the opportunity to relive a 2007 Superbowl rematch Between Eli and Brady Indianapolis leading to the ? will this be the last time Colts fans get to see a Manning step on to a football field in the state of Indiana? well we are still a couple of months away from getting the answer to the 28 million dollar question, and to be perfectly honest anyone who attempts to answer that question at this point in time is not giving you any concrete information so im not going to sit here and play Rob Lowe. However if you were to read the tea leaves they would honestly tell you there is a very high probability that this was indeed his last season in Indy. I could already feel the excitement in South beach Payton to Miami? sounds great on paper right? However i just want to point out a few things that should not be overlooked by any stretch of the imagination. We all need to remember that this organization has been in this position before, and the outcome has shown varied results.
As painful as it might be i feel the need to take a trip down memory lane as we need to put some perspective in to the whole situation. Remember when Drew Brees became available? we were all almost certain that that horrendous quarterback drought was over, he would come to Miami and we would become contenders for the next 10 yrs? ( as he was much younger then Payton is now)we had the opportunity to find that QB to lead our team for the next decade. We decided at the time that Brees was coming of a crucial shoulder injury and was too much of a risk for us to take a chance on as the shoulder is an integral part of a quarterbacks throwing mechanics, if he doesn't have a strong shoulder he cant throw adequately. We just didn't believe that that shoulder can heal to a 100 percent and Brees would never be the same again. Well a Superbowl ring, several playoff appearances later, and a revived city later we came to find out that investing on all those Culpepper jerseys wasn't exactly the best way to go. Fast forward to the 08 season it was the start of a new era we drafted th so called quarterback of the future in Chad Henne, brought in CP10 at the last second to replace Mcown and everything seem extremely promising at the time remember?. CP10 was great and all and I'm sure we are all very grateful for he key role he played in the biggest turnaround in franchise history. There was just one " minor" issue which clearly turned out to be of no small significance. Pennington was released from the jets for a reason, he also had dealt with not only one but several shoulder issues enough to waiv a red flag but we took a chance anyway.(Don't get me wrong im glad we did you never really know the outcome of any particular situation i.e Brees) anyways Pennington went on to struggle with that injury which pretty much ended his career in 2010
Fast forward to today, im not by any means comparing Chad to Manning but it does seem like deja vu doesn't it? BIG difference here is now we are talking about nerve damage to the neck area, an area that can not only end a players life as a professional QB, but can also cost unimaginable damage that can impact his life after football. No one really knows the extend or severity of the injury except Payton and the Colts. Anyone that tells you otherwise including Rob Lowe is basing their statements on pure speculation. I will say this though, even if the Colts do select Luck in this years draft and follow the script, it doesn't mean you release a healthy Manning that can give them at least 3 to 4 more years at a high level. Of course there is other factors that go in to the equation such as Manning's personal decision does he want to be released, what team would he like to play for? or even better does he even want to continue playing? there is a not so far fetched possibility he pulls a Marino and retires.Manning obviously doesn't have any economical issues to worry about and his life after football is basically written down in pen as a success. One last thing i do want to point out is that that i firmly believe there is a difference between a franchise quarter back who will lead your team for over a decade and a top tier franchise qb nearing the end of his career with less then 5 yrs at the most left in the tank

i would take peyton and his injuries all day everyday
while we groom a young QB of the future.

I don't want to spend 15M+ of salary cap for warm bench becuase Injuries
If he was really healthy, forget the idea to groom a young QB, PM don’t like to do this… he take all snaps and don’t allow young QB’s develop.
i just dont think that Peyton would even come to play
if her wanst completley confident that he is going to be able to avoid future injury. I know that anything can happen in the NFL and one blindsided hit could end anyones career, but i am more referencing that i dont think peyton has any intention of potentially ending his career and life after football by coming back if he isnt 100%.
PM is not the coach and will not carry the same latitude that he got in Indy. He will have to follow the direction from the coaching staff and a whoever the FO decides to bring in (Manning, Flynn, whoever) will have to be aware that there is a youngster developing under him.

I'm extremely OPPOSED
To bringing Manning here. It would be another huge mistake and i think it would set us back.

I agree with Sharkz
2 main arguments:
1) Salary cap, bring PM end with all aour salary cap, even to sign our key FA
2) PM was incompatible with “Grow young QB’s”, all his young backup QB’s in more than 10 years fails, because PM isn’t want to spend time teaching other QB’s, maybe if he was thinking in coach position for his future this can change… but I don’t think it.
As the old adage goes..
You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Just think Daunte Culpepper…

to compare daunte culpepper and peyton manning is irresponsible.
We are talking about one of the best QB ever and a flash in the pan QB. There is no comparision IMO.

Really?
You’re trying to tell me that injuries effect elite players differently? Interesting….

these are two seperate injuries
and had effected two seperate players. One a Hall of famer who has taken the appropriate steps to fully rehab, and the other a QB who had a few good seasons and never took the game very seriously.
Its about how hard the player works to recover. Daunte was never known for his work ehtic and his attention to detail. Peyton has never been questioned about his work ethic and attention to detail.
So yes, in a way, injuries do effect elite players differently because elite players get elite through hard work and taking good care of themselves.

Maybe you should read the article again
i was actually comparing Mannings situation to Brees not Culpepper bottom linrs whow in 3 ye its a gamble just like we did not take it with Brees and it didnt work out, we did take it with Penny and it didnt work out there is no right answer. but to be clear i do not want PM nerve damage in the neck is serious even if we draft a rookie the fact that we have to cater the system to PM run offense would leave us in the same spot as we are now when the coach puts in his new system
Why didn't it work out wih Penny?
Oh this right, injuries that he’d also had in the past…

How many injuries did Penny have with his shoulder before that though?
And really, it was a torn ACL, not the shoulder, that put him on the shelf this final time. So far, Manning has had as many injuries as Brees.

if you were replying to me, I am with yoiu on that...
Daunte was brought up by sharksand phinz… i was pointing out that great players work hard to recover and pieces of crap with lots of talent dont rebound from injury because they are too lazy to fully rehab. This is why drew brees is still great. This is why tom brady is still great. Pennington is whole other story and his injuries IMO have more to do with the guy just being injury prone. We all know someone who works their butt off but still gets injured every chance they get. I love pennigton, but he is that guy.

I'm extremely opposed to being extremely opposed to bringing Manning here...if healthy.
I see your point about cap space, but to get your hands on a Hall-of-Fame QB who could instantly make ALL of your receivers better…you HAVE to pull the trigger

That's the problem. Health.
No one knows he’ll be fully recovered from the surgery and 100%. I don’t like the risk. The rewards are great if he is, but i just don’t see him being the same PM as he was before. I’m not the biggest Flynn supporter, but i like that he’s not a health liability.

Peyton won't risk being in a wheelchair to play football
So if he wants to play, he is fine. He has millions of dollars and is set for life and has a super bowl ring. He won’t risk it if he isn’t well.

I know that as laymen we all see NERVE INJURY and NECK and think OMGDEAD,
but everything I have ever read about his injury from knowledgeable medical people is that this is a very easily treatable injury with a high rate of recovery, and that there are dozens of current and former players in the NFL who have come back from the the exact same thing with no problem.
Yay.
That makes two people now that have said that there are dozens (approximately 40) of NFL players playing with the same operation in the NFL. I won’t say the injury is easily treated, but if Manning recovers, he’s not a huge injury risk. Why aren’t people concerned for Steve Slaton, our own RB? He had the same surgery done. Nobody thinks of him as being “one hit away” from another devastating injury.

Honestly?
Because Slayton isn’t a big deal. He will never be on the field as “The Guy”. I don’t like the move, but if it happens and it works out well for us, ill GLADLY eat crow.

Or simply...
Because Slaton isn’t a big-name guy, people didn’t know he even had the surgery and based on his play, he also doesn’t seem any different.

I walked into a Modell's today and saw all the Giants NFC Championship gear all over...
I’m jealous. It’s been 20 years since we even came close.
I would love an opportunity. Peyton Manning is only 1 year younger than Tom Brady…people act like he is ancient. He knows his body, if he plays, he knows he feels good. If he feels like he cant cut it and might end up in a wheelchair, he will retire. We need to go for him if he wants to play. People act like we have some grand plan to find a young QB, but we don’t. Flynn would be more of a gamble.
And with peyton we can still draft a QB like Tannehill. It’s a no-brainer.
That was pretty simple...

i read that the due date for the $28mil can be moved. Peyton wants to stay in Indy and if Indy wants him, they can mutually agree to move the option until after they know he is healthy. thus negating all the speculation that he would sign with us (which is very unlikely anyway)…

It can be moved if Peyton agrees
Everything so far is saying Peyton won’t agree to push it back. He wants Indy to make a decision, but he doesn’t want to be dragged and used as trade bait either.

ok, but either way, I still think it is unlikely he will want to come to MIami if he is released

I wouldn't think Miami may be the favorite, but I don't see why it is unlikely.
I don’t think he has any problems with Miami.

i think miami would be the favorite because of the weapons he would have to begin with.
He would have a solid run game, something that he hasnt had sonce the edge left indi. He would have a solid defense to support him and his turnovers. He would have a couple of very dangerous recieving threats to play with along with an offensive line that should be tremendously better next year.
The other teams in the mix have some of what we have, but we are the only ones who instantly become a title contender with him IMO.
