The Perfect (Yet Possible) Off Season.
Free Agent Acquisitions:
Peyton Manning, QB

Last year Peyton Manning was known as the best QB in football, and arguably the best QB in NFL history. One injury plagued season later, and nobody seems to want him on their team. Are you kidding me?! As serious as the injury may be, if you have a chance of acquiring the 4 time MVP, you sign him! It may be a risk, but what other move isn't just as risky? Matt Flynn could be the next Kevin Kolb, RGIII, as much as I love the kid, could be a bust as well. Out of all these "risks" I would take Peyton hands down. He's had a full season to recover from his injury, and he still has this whole off season to get 100% healthy. I believe that he will be healthy once training camp starts, and will be playing at an elite level for 3+ more years. Oh and for those saying hes only a short term answer, because he is 35 (a year older than Tom Brady, and look where he's at right now), just continue reading the post.

Arguably the best TE in the NFL, and we all know how badly the Dolphins need a play maker at the position. This acquisition would instantly take the Dolphins offense to the next level, making their descent TE corps into one of the best in the league. Having Joe Philbin as the Dolphins Head Coach will help lure Finley to Miami, considering Finley and Philbin's relationship. Finley tweeted about the former Green Bay Offensive Coordinator becoming the 10th Head Coach in Miami Dolphins history saying "A huge congratulations to Joe Philbin, no one deserves it more than this guy. The Pack will miss him!", the Pack may miss Jermichael too, if they choose not to tag him, which they may not, considering Green Bays depth at TE. Finley and Clay (Fasano would be cut in order to free up cap space), would be a nightmare for opposing defenses, because not only would they have to worry about this great duo, but they would also have to worry about the Dolphins Big 3, their WR's.
Jake Scott, OG

We all know that the Dolphins right side of the Offensive Line was horrible, to say the least. Jake Scott would be a great addition for this team, he would bring toughness and some very needed leadership, because I doubt the Dolphins will resign Vernon Carey. Scott also played with Peyton Manning for four years, including their Super Bowl season. Jake Scott would play RG, and I believe John Jerry will be Miami's starting RT, anything will be an upgrade over Marc Colombo. An Offensive Line consisting of Jake Long, Richie Incognito, Mike Pouncey, Jake Scott, and John Jerry will be a major improvement from last season.
Draft:
First Round Pick: Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina

Many of you probably wondered "What Big 3 is this guy talking about?" well here's your answer. Brandon Marshall 6-4 230, Alshon Jeffery 6-4 233, and arguably the best Slot Receiver in the NFL, Davone Bess, DAMN! What do you think about this receiving corps? Just imagine the type of damage Peyton Manning can cause with the Dolphins improved Offensive Line, and their revamped WR's/TE's. Jeffery's is a pure beast and will make an immediate impact in the NFL. Scouts see him as a #1 receiver, so just imagine what he can do being a #2, having Brandon Marshall opposite side.
Second Round Pick: Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M

Here's the long term answer for those of you worrying about the future. Tannehill would make perfect sense if the Dolphins hire Mike Sherman to be their next Offensive Coordinator, having been Tannehill's Head Coach at Texas A&M. Ryan is a top QB prospect, and sitting down for a few years, learning from one of the greatest QB's in NFL history will do nothing but help the young QB.
For the rest of the draft take the BPA in the following positions: RT, OLB, S, CB.
Depth Chart
QB: Peyton Manning, Ryan Tannehill
RB's: Reggie Bush, Daniel Thomas
FB: Charles Clay
WR: Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery, Davone Bess
TE: Jermichael Finley, Charles Clay
LT: Jake Long LG: Richie Incognito C: Mike Pouncey RG: Jake Scott RT: John Jerry
ILB's: Karlos Dansby, Kevin Burnett
OLB's: Cameron Wake, Koa Misi
CB: Vontae Davis, Sean Smith, Jimmy Wilson
S: Reshad Jones, Chris Clemons
DE: Jared Odrick, Kendall Langford
DT: Randy Starks
As you can see almost all of my moves were on the offensive side of the ball, in this era of the NFL I believe "Offense Wins Championships", just look at the elite teams in the NFL right now, New England, Green Bay, New Orleans, etc. plus the Dolphins have an above average defense to begin with. Super Bowl Contenders anyone?

This would be the perfect off season but,
I don’t think it’s realistic. When was the last time we brought in 3 big names like these during one off season? Absolutely intrigued by your thoughts on the subject nonetheless. I’m on board with this off season. Wouldn’t change a thing.
Peyton Manning spreading the ball out to Marshall, Jeffery, Bess and Finley would make us yearly contenders and in all likelihood, a Superbowl winner.
I voted for “not sure, his injury worries me.” I’d be all for this move if he is declared 100% healthy or damn near close to 100%.
Nice post by the way, Rec’d.

We did acquire Dansby and Marshall in the same year,
There’s a first for everything, it is possible, lets just see what happens, and thanks, I appreciate it.

True,
it certainly can happen. I won’t argue that. I just personally don’t think it will. Maybe a few of these moves will take place. Like SimpleBuddha said, I’d be happy if even half of these players were signed.

signing PM will take almost all salary cap...
PM don’t will sign for a low money…
Finley think he was one a of the TOP TE’s in the league and he want’s big money too…
Jake Scott could be the cheaper of the 3… but no much.
and now our own FA
Soliali will want big money too… he knows he can be a top paid NT in the NFL and he will want it.
Langford and Merling could accept decent proposals.
Carney will accept low contract… but maybe he will gone a taste FA.
other key resigns will be Lydon Murtha, Marvin Mitchell and Austin Spitler all these guys are solid deep backups for the starters.
solia isn't coming back, thats where money for peyton would go, but def don't have 6 mil for finley
not to mention a pass rusher opposite of wake is a must
it is not realistic...

Fellow Heat fan,
Im sure you didn’t think LeBron, Wade, and Bosh signing with the Heat was not realistic either lol
Not really similar situations
You can afford to do that in the NBA when rosters are much smaller. Though the Heat also tanked for a few years just to make sure they could even do that. The Dolphins are between $5-$10 million under the cap and while they certainly can make room and use incentives, it would take a lot of maneuvering to get both Peyton at $15 mil and then still add Finley (unlikely to be available) and Scott (could command between $3-6M per year as 3rd best Guard on the market).

and Bosh and LeBron accept smaller proposals than other teams made
in order to can play the 3 together.
and don’t remember if Wade restructure his contract to make some cap room too.
but from LeBron and Bosh I’m sure they accept lower contracts to can play in trio with Wade. They say public this statements.
check the salary cap for 2012
if Long, Dansby and Marshall restructure his contracts could be in position to take PM… but if not sing PM means loose some guys in FA and can land any other big name.
ok wake is way under paid and we need money for out future free agents like sean smith as well
along with fasano and starks in the next 2 years…soliai is gone and we are probably going to a 4-3 but to find a pass rusher will be the second highest need…peyton will be a top priority but i could see us trying to throw whatever cash we have left after him to guys like mathis for a year or two…
actaully i thought it was going to happen when they signed their extensons 3 years prior...
but the thing that makes this impossible is not wether the players want to come here, it is the salary cap

60% would be good too..
If we get 60% of what you recommend that would still make us a way lot better!
A few things on this one
I don’t think we’ll land those 3 in FA. Beyond thinking Finley will be available, but signing Peyton Manning would eat up too much cap space to do that. Aside from that, my only reaction to Jeffery is “eww.” I don’t like him overall as a prospect, but he doesn’t compliment Marshall well.
Oh, and though you may think Jerry is an upgrade over Colombo, I’ve already show that if you take his stats as an OT this year and project it over the same amount of snaps Colombo had, his numbers would be very similar. Not a big upgrade unfortunately.

It is all possible,
Peyton will not demand that BIG of a contract after missing a whole year due to a serious injury, the only BIG contract out of these 3 players will be Finley, Scott is not even close to being the best G available (Nicks, Grubbs, etc.) therefore his contract wont be astronomical. The Dolphins can also free up cap space by. releasing some aging veterans, such as Fasano, Bell, etc. I know this probably wont happen, but it is realistic, Im pretty sure nobody thought the Heat or Eagles could’ve done what they did in previous off-seasons.
by FinsDBess15 on Jan 23, 2012 2:36 PM EST via mobile reply actions
Peyton won't demand $28 million.
But Miami can’t afford to pay Peyton $15 million and then sign those other guys in FA. Miami doesn’t have the cap space for it.

Great points about the Heat and Eagles, but this is the Miami Dolphins...
On second thought, we have made a habit of bringing in some big names throughout the last few off seasons. Marshall, Dansby, Bush, and Burnett come to mind.
by PhinnyFromItaly on Jan 23, 2012 3:17 PM EST up reply actions
Even if we freed up space I don't think there would be enough space unless Long was traded for Manning.
We could create room and get Manning at a realistic price ($14-$20M)
But we won’t be able to make any other moves except small signings.

Won't happen
Manning’s $28 million bonus is due before FA is set to begin. If the Colts don’t pay, then Manning will be a FA on the first day of the league year. Miami and the Colts won’t be able to negotiate a trade before that first day of the league year, this Manning will already 1) be a FA or 2) Owed $28 million by the Colts and pretty much non-tradeable.

They either have to pay and play him or cut him before that day.

Sign PM mean no other big name signing
and maybe cut/trade some good players to make cap room.
for this reason and the neck injury concerns, Sign PM was the worst decision for the Phins, but that’s my point of view…
I don’t think Flynn was the next Kolb, Flynn was a lot better than Kolb… I don’t understand why the Eagles and Cardinals think Kolb was a star caliber QB.
I would take Blackmon as a wideout over Jeffery, and where are we getting all this money from?

Blackmon will be gone by the time we pick,
and we can free up cap space by releasing Fasano, Bell, etc. restructuring Marshall’s, Dansby’s, and Long’s contracts, I believe they’ll sacrifice money in order to acquire some great players and win football games, plus we can let Soliai or Langford walk.
Then your depth chart needs updating because you have Bell, Soliai and Langford all starting!

finsdbess,, imbecile extarodinaire
the first time i read your comment earlier in this article i was going to reply about your logic in releasing fasano but now after i read how you want fasano released because he’s an aging veteran i fully realized that you are a complete imbecile. fasano just turned 27 and he’s heading into his prime years. now that we have an offensive minded coach you’ll see fasanos numbers get better than they have been. fasano is a quality tight end who can do it all. he was put into a bad situation by having to block on over 200 plays in each of the last two seasons, and he still did the job when called on . i’m glad we have a quality tight end who puts the team before his own statistics. fasanofan
Bess you have angered Anthony Fasano....

Ok maybe I misused the term "aging",
But I would still cut Fasano in a heartbeat in order to free up cap space and sign Finley. Fasano may be a good TE, but he aint shit compared to Jermichael. Finley is one of the premiere TE’s in this league and we need a play making TE that will help us score points and win football games. Stop riding Fasano. Finley Fan
Rant time: Losing teams don't sell tickets
Peyton Manning DOES sell tickets. Until he starts losing, or until he gets hurt and is on the bench. Even still, put a healthy Peyton on a losing team and they won’t sell tickets. Nobody will pay to see a loser, whether its Manning or anyone else behind center on a losing team.
Ross, and everybody else that wants Manning, want the guy from 2 or 3 years ago. They want to win games the way he won them 2 or 3 years ago. They want a franchise QB right now. They don’t want to wait. They don’t want to groom a guy. They want the quick, easy fix. They have stars in their eyes and cotton in their common sense. Manning might have 2 more years if he even plays another down. Those 2 years will almost certainly be his career lows, statistically. He’s won his Superbowl already with the Colts. His legacy is assured. He gains and loses nothing by getting rich in Miami and riding on his laurels.
We need a YOUNG QB. We don’t need quick fixes. Quick fixes are what led Miami out of contention years ago and straight to the AFC East basement. Quick fixes are why Miami never has depth. Quick fixes are why Miami never has second round picks.
I’d take Flynn over Manning. I’d take Moore over Manning. Why? Cause Manning has a busted neck and may never be the same again. A year away for a guy Manning’s age is an eternity. Even if he does clear to play with his neck problems, he still will have conditioning issues. He’d also still have to learn a new system and new players, just like a young QB would.
It doesn’t cease to amaze me how quick some Dolphins fans are to throw caution to the wind and take a flyer as long as he has had success in the past. Larry Johnson was a Dolphin. Thurman Thomas was a Dolphin. Trent Green was a Dolphin. They were big names in their days too. They weren’t so hot as Dolphins.
Best reason to say no to Manning? According to media reports, Ross wants him. Let me say that again: ROSS wants him. Not Ireland, not Philbin…Ross. I guarantee you that Philbin doesnt want him nor Ireland. Just Ross. Interfering, interloping, meddling Ross wants Manning. Everybody here remember what Ross knows about football? Right, Nothing. He needs to stick to writing the checks.
No Manning please. That potential pick up has the words “epic fail” written all over it. It also has the words “sucker” on it. If Manning still had his game…Indianapolis would keep him. They’d be talking renegotiation of the contract. I loathe that this theory has picked up steam in the press…that “story” as it were, has something of a deliberate Ross news-leak aura about it. It just seems…fishy.
Don’t get me wrong…if we got Manning, i’d root for him and continue rooting for the team. But i’d also be remembering that we should have gotten a future QB. Someone who will be here the next decade. The only thing about Manning likely to last a decade is his price tag…and I assure you…if its about money..Ross will throw it at him.
Manning to Miami = stop gap bad move. I’ll take a younger QB now instead.

how would ireland and philbin not want arguably the best qb ever? the year before this season he put up amazing numbers...
i think if we kept the money on the o-line low with jerry at RG and a cheap but effective fill in at RT like a draft pick or Murtha, we could save a lot of money for Peyton, soliai will be gone and he took 11 million last year…we need about 4-5 for a pass rusher and we need to pay wake more than what he’s getting now, unfortunately through all this I see us possibly letting Y Bell go which could hurt this defense a lot, also guys like bmarsh and dansby might have to restructure their contracts a little, oh and dont forget Long is a free agent after this next season as well, and he’ll need to be resigned…lots of decisions to be made
Show me one successful head coach
..that got his start from picking up someone elses trash, and succeeded with that trash.
Arguably the best QB…hell…even if he is indisputably the best ever, Indy wouldn’t have him out on the curb if he were still the Manning from 2 years ago.

if peyton manning is trash then i would happily that someone elses garbage any day of the week
indy might be letting him go because of luck and the 28 mil he’s owed, not bc he all of the sudden sucks…its not like he had a down year or played very poorly, he got hurt but if he shows he’s healthy there is no reason to think he cant be where he was the last time he stpped on a football field…
It was really only a slight hint LOL

if we came out of free agency with a healthy Peyton Manning ..
We will have hit a home run in free agency. Manning will make Fasano and Clay play better. It would be nice to have a RG, but worst case scenario if we just resign Carey we will be ok next year. To be honest we might be ok with Nate Garner at RG. We would still be the best offensive line that Peyton Manning has ever had. I would also venture to guess that the combination of weapons of Brandon Marshall, Davone Bess, Brian Hartline, Clyde Gates, Charles Clay, Anthony Fasano, Reggie Bush and Daniel Thomas might be the best compliment of playmakers he has ever had. He will make guys like Marlon Moore and Roberto Wallace relevant, just like he did in Indy. Do you really think that every single guy he threw the ball to was as talented as he made them look?
We had [Brady] down… but we didn’t kick him. We helped him up and gave him a PowerPuff Girls band-aid for his knee. What exactly did you expect would happen when we did that?

This would be unbelievable!!!!!!!!
That is why I can’t believe it (exciting but not possible) we can’t afford Manning and Finley just not gonna happen, however we can probably get one but not both (and I doubt Green Bay is letting Finley go anywhere.) Also I know Tannehill stock is falling because of injury but he will still be a 1st rd pick probably Seatlle. If we want to beat the Patriots we need a pass rusher (we have 1 as of now) that is why I think it’s either going to be Coples, Ingram, or Mercilus (in that order.)
