Anyone fancy a change at GM?

Right to start off with I think the set up is all wrong with the Dolphins. I think that Jeff Ireland has too much power and influence. He should have gone with Tony. I think Bill Polian would be a good move and a upgrade over Jeff Ireland. (Even thou to give credit where its due his last draft was quite good).

Everyone is talking about Luck, RGIII, Flynn etc but I quite like the idea of getting Brandon Weeden in around the 4th round. Yes he's older but has the tools to make it in my mind. Even if we only have him for a few years that will still be a few years of not potentially searching for a QB.

Agree or Disagree?

This is how many Dolphins fans feel about Jeff Ireland

That said. Its too late. As Omar Kelly says, learn to love the one you’re with.

"I think we can all agree the best thing about this years Superbowl is the Jets aren't in it. The Jets are a lot like the Yankees...everyone hates them. Only they don't have good players, a winning tradition or a coach who doesn't beat off everytime a player gets their ankle taped." - Daniel Tosh

How was he irrelevant?

He spoke about the search. He talked. He answered questions. And, it was a press conference about the hire of a new head coach. What were you expecting? Him to break down draft prospects?

^^THIS

He said exactly what I want him to say.. He is going to find players, and let Philbin figure out who plays. That is exactly what we want. We want him to go do what he does.. he is known around the league as the “Super Scout.”
Like him or hate him… be upset that he asks what you feel are the wrong questions… It is a good thing that Dez Bryant is not here in South Beach all the time. He has already been arrested here the other day and he was just visiting. Imagine how much trouble he would be in if he LIVED here… That guy has been arrested a few times and as much talent as we have down here in Miami, we also have to worry about the types of players we bring here for just that reason.

Be upset that he betrayed Sparano … whatever. But we have a better head coach now I believe then we had before. Sparano was a decent coach… but not a good coach. 3 7-9 seasons. Sparano made enough mistakes to not get another year here, and I am glad that Ireland had the guts to say what we were all thinking. Here is a short list of the things I feel made him a bad coach:
1. Kept Pasqualoni too long.
2. Kept Henning too long.
3. Constantly played to tie games while other teams were playing to win.

We had [Brady] down… but we didn’t kick him. We helped him up and gave him a PowerPuff Girls band-aid for his knee. What exactly did you expect would happen when we did that?

by Jason Scott_90 on Jan 22, 2012 6:38 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Sparanos biggest downfall IMO

was that he played scared, he played to not lose rather than playing to win. How many times in his 4 years do you remember the Dolphins taking a risk?

he appeared irrelevent. so what that he showed up and blathered about 'the search process' or talked or answered questions.

his main newsmaking moment was telling everyone that the new coach has 100 percent latitude in hiring….ie. he will step out of the way (presumably) on that one. omar kelly is saying his role will migrate ever more towards scouting.
i’m glad we have a person called general manager, but the core of that press conference was ross and philbin.
its just my opinion or read of this. could be wrong, but nothing you’ve said changes my mind (with respect!).

I like the way Ireland drafted last year, which is the draft thatbhe had the most say...

I think Ireland is a good evaluator of talent, and we should give him another draft to really see what he is made of

Miami's Superstars: Reggie Bush, Brandon Marshall, Jake Long, Mike Pouncey, Karlos Dansby, Cameron Wake, Vontae Davis and Sean Smith (just wait), Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Mike Stanton, Gaby Sanchez, Hanley Ramirez, Josh Johnson, Heath Bell, Mark Buehrle, Jose Reyes, Tomas Fleischmann, Stephen Weiss, Jose Theodore, and Chris Versteeg. :)

Disagree

If you are gonna get weeden, might as well stick with Matt Moore, he’s younger, has more experience, and he won’t have to go through the rookie learning curve as weeden would have to

i disagree, we went 6-6 under Moore (starting) after being thrust into the starting position

he put us in a position to win in every game, and after a rough start, its tough to keep a team competitive… and he successfully did so

Weeden, on the other hand, is an unproven player who could be a total bust and is older than Moore

now, lets say he turns out to be a solid QB, it would probably take 2-3 years for him to fully form into a competitive QB.. at that point, you have a 30-31 year old QB, who probably has less than 5 years of his best play left in him

Matt Moore is a good backup

He is not a franchise guy, a real franchise guy elevates the play of the players around him, Matt Moore did not. He is a good backup, thats it. He couldn’t keep his job in Carolina, it would be irresponsible to go into next season as Matt Moore as your only viable starting option

Yup

Roddy White – 15 dropped passes
Greg Little – 14 dropped passes
BM – 14 dropped passes
Wes Welker – 13 dropped passes
Victor Cruz – 11 dropped passes

That’s the top 5 in dropped passes in the NFL in 2011. Dwayne Bowe with 10 dropped passes was the only other player with double-digit drops. The info was from Pro Football Focus.

Marshall has been fine with Miami.

And he is a legitimate #1 WR. He’s not top 3 at WR, but he’s a #1 WR.

Marshall hasn't had problems with police in Miami

It’s also not known how many of the 14 drops were TDs, so it’s very well possible he didn’t drop more TDs than he caught. Besides, the top WRs generally are the ones with the most dropped passes.

And if you want to see what Miami would be like without Marshall because he’s not a #1 WR, I would bet that our offense would be really ugly. He is a #1 WR whether you like it or not.

Answer: 5 Dropped TDs, 6 Caught TDs.

A Red zone threat he is not.
Keep in mind that Marshall has caught 34 TDs in his career (91 games, 494 receptions) and only reached double digits once (10 in 2009).

NY Jets = NFL's Chicago Cubs

There's a fine line between hopeful and desperate. Just look @ Jets fans.

by TheFinReaper on Jan 22, 2012 9:33 PM EST up reply actions

Andre Johnson has never reached double digit TDs in a year.

Yet he’s considered the best WR in the NFL. Marshall is a red zone threat, has always had his fair share of drops, but did have more drops than usual in end zone. Marshall is a #1 WR, but is not one of the top 5 WRs in the NFL. Yet the fact that he has only 1 season of 10+ TDs obviously doesn’t mean he can’t be among the top WRs if the NFL’s best has never reached that milestone.

Dude, he got stabbed by his wife and “forgot” to pay a cab.

Those are two problems right there.

I would like to see it w/o Marshall. We wouldn’t have to force him the ball to keep him happy and the other receivers wouldn’t drop as many touchdowns or randomly run out of bounds (Jets Monday Night Game)

Being stabbed is not a legal problem

And the cab portion never amounted to anything. This is like saying someone that receives a loud noise complaint is now a team problem.

Without Marshall, we wouldn’t be in position for the other WRs to have a chance to drop a TD.

Because many people don't want to implicate their wife in a crime.

And the entire shooting incident was actually shown to be that the killer was believed to be targeting Marshall’s cousin, not him. Marshall didn’t get a teammate killed. The shooter got his teammate killed.

It came out in testimony it was his cousin, not Marshall.

And I know what Marshall’s personality has been like. I don’t condone things he’s done, but there are hundreds who have done things that people still back. Leonard Little was still backed after he killed someone. Same with Stallworth. Nobody cares about Ray Lewis’ incident now. All I’m saying is Marshall hasn’t had any issues in Miami that would cause him to be suspended.

And I’m willing to bet that he will be in the postseason at some point. There are more players on the team than just him. He’d be in the playoffs if he was on a number of teams. Miami and Denver didn’t miss out because of him. They probably were closer to the playoffs than they’d be without him.

If you look at the Colts, they are pretty depleted. Manning made him look like a genius, because he covered up all the weaknesses on the team. He can barely even hit on 1st round picks… Joseph Addai (RB), Anthony Gonzalez (WR), Donald Brown (RB), and Jerry Hughes (DE). They have all either been extremely injury prone or not impactful.

I don’t want Bill Polian anywhere near this team. I put the colts bad season as much on Bill Polian as on the abscence of Manning.

Ireland

Ireland has his marching orders. IMO the writting is on the wall. Ireland wanted McCoy and Ross wanted Philbin. The next 2 years are make or break for Ireland. Philbin seems by all accounts to be a solid hire. I believe Ross will listen to Philbin. I saw a shift in power structure. An the people that think last years draft was great. I don’t get it. It’s one year and everyone is anointing it a great draft. You can’t say it was great after 1 year. It takes atleast 3 years to judge a draft class. The Draft is half the job of a GM.

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is.

well... lets look at the potential hits...

Pouncey and Clay have already made an impact. Gates is also already making an impact on special teams returning kickoffs. He hasn’t seen the field much on offense, but remember it was a shortened year and we had bigger problems this year on offense than trying to get a rookie involved. That would be 3… a good draft. But add to that Daniel Thomas who doesn’t look to be a home run, but certainly looks like he might be a really good compliment to Reggie Bush. You can also throw in Jimmy Wilson who is already making an impact on special teams and has even made plays when he has seen the field. Picking up a difference maker in the 7th round at any position is a homerun.

We had [Brady] down… but we didn’t kick him. We helped him up and gave him a PowerPuff Girls band-aid for his knee. What exactly did you expect would happen when we did that?

by Jason Scott_90 on Jan 24, 2012 7:33 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Yeah Pouncey, Thomas, Gates, Clay....

They’ve all been busts haven’t they…LOL!! Ireland had a solid draft this past year, so I don’t see what all the fuss is about. Sure he’s made his mistakes. But I think he’s picking up some good solid players for us at the moment. It’ll be real interesting to see how this draft pans out.

by BahamaDolfan on Jan 22, 2012 2:49 PM EST reply actions   1 recs

You replying to me Bahama?

Pouncey solid pick. No brainer except. I believe he was rated 10-15 in the league as a center. You pick a center that high at 15 he should be a Probowler like his brother. An yeah I know he is a 3rd or 4th Alt. for the probowl. I believe he will be a top 6-10 center. Thomas? Your kidding right. His YPC sucked. Gates is the exact player you rate in his 3rd year. LOL. Clay? Is he better than Gronk, Hernandez , Graham, Pitta, or Gresham? Being a GM is not about looking for acorns in the draft. Its about looking at the strength of the draft and going after it.

The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is.

No it was just a reply in general.

Pouncey has done better than anyone expected. Most thought he’d be a guard. Thomas has had a difficult time with injuries and the resurgence of bush, but I think he’ll be a nice player. Gates was always going to take a season to transition. He’s a DII player. And he did improve on kick returns. Clay for a 6th rounder is a steal! Those guys u talk about drafted much higher.

by BahamaDolfan on Jan 22, 2012 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

Ireland has done okay as GM, but in drafting I think he took the cowardly route

Safe picks but no gamechangers right now anyways. The OL, pass rushers, TE, and our safety position are holes we’ve had last offseason, so I don’t know where you can say he done real well drafting. The influx of Cowboys castoffs have also blemished his cred. Sparano deserved some blame for our dismal seasons, but to exclude Ireland from blame is downright neglect.

Get the best man to clear every hurdle that stand in the Dolphins way, go RG3.
RG3, the new Transformer of the future.

Ummm...

He found wake didn’t he? Pretty good pass rusher. And we had JT there too. We will be getting a new one this year. Philbin knows of the importance of getting to Brady. If we sign Flynn I think he’ll address this need in he 1st, and if we trade back it’ll be even better.

Just need tweaks to OL and we will be fine. Jerry may well start next year too. I’m actually really liking Mosely at RT at the moment if Sanders and Adams aren’t there in the second.

TE I agree we need a TE, and this could get addressed this year.

by BahamaDolfan on Jan 22, 2012 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

are you insane? those guys were all picked before the 6th round.

Some of those guys were picked in the 1st round. I think once we get a legitimate franchise QB you will see better numbers than you saw last year out of Clay, and that is really encouraging considering that every time they threw the ball to him it was for a big play it seemed.

We had [Brady] down… but we didn’t kick him. We helped him up and gave him a PowerPuff Girls band-aid for his knee. What exactly did you expect would happen when we did that?

If he was the GUY IN CHARGE (Like most GMs) for 4 years and was the guy DIRECTLY responsible then I would agree with you.

The Head Coach is the one DIRECTLY responsible for the teams success or lack there of. Who was the man that built 75%+ or the Miami Dolphins 1970s championship roster? Don’t know him by name? Shocking. I bet you know who the head coach was though. How about we examine something:
1969 Miami Dolphins
Head Coach: George Wilson Jr.
Record: 3-10-1
1970 Miami Dolphins
Head Coach: Don Shula
Record: 10-4
I will grant you that Miami had some big acquisitions (Mandich, Scott, Foley in the draft and Warfield via trade) in the offseason but the core of the team was already there in 1969 and the coach didn’t know what to do with it so HE got fired.

What mess?

This team is solid in a lot of positions, following up the 2007 the FO had John Denney, Brandon Fields and Ted Ginn to build on and nothing else to really work with.

Do you remember this pearl of wisdom?
“Coaching is taking the talent you have and getting the most out of their ability.”

Care to guess who said that? I will give you a hint, his first name is Don and his last name rhymes with hula. Tell me again who is DIRECTLY responsible for a teams success. Nobody talks about the guys that build the roster, they talk about the head coach and the players on that roster.

Seriously?

This is stupid. Are most Dolphin fans not happy unless they are firing or complaining about someone? Polian? Did you see their team this year? That was a disgrace to the NFL. Because they had Peyton he didn’t evaluate the rest of the team I guess, no thanks. By the way Ireland is a good GM just be patient. The future is bright. This Philbin guy is going to be good.

I don't think every move made is the right one.

But you should also apply the same theory to yourself and not try to think everything that has been done was a bad move. Despite your claims, Marshall has shown to be a good WR and Miami would be much worse without him.

because of Manning everyone looked better than they actually were....

Even the defense looked better because of him because they were playing with a lead and they could tee off on the opposing QB…

given the fact that we got Reggie Bush for...

Jonathan Amaya and a swap of 6th round picks… I think we made out pretty well in the Reggie Bush deal. You can add that to the list of home runs that Jeff Ireland has hit since he has been in charge.
