Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Philbin & Contenders Now???? > YES!

The process was long, we were all impatient but truly believe Ross/Ireland picked the Man we needed now!

  • At the end of the season we were playing very good & almost beat the Patriots (who are in the AFC Championship game, again).
  • We can bring Flynn in and Philbin already knows the system Flynn is acclimated with, instead of making Flynn adjust to something he has to learn> best chance for success!
  • Not needing a QB in the draft allows us to solidify our O line (which is probably 3/4 there) and PROTECT Flynn.
  • We can also go out and draft Nasty TE....watching the playoffs shows how beneficial they can be!
  • Plug some holes on our D though FA & draft.
  • I like our receiving core, hopefully Philbin can get Gates involved and make him a weapon.
  • Bush has proved to be a every-down back + will be a great weapon in the spread offense.
  • Thomas is decent & strong, not ready to give up on.
  • Flynn seems to hit receivers in stride which plays into Marshall's ability to get yards after the catch.
  • I like RGIII as well but I think we would have to give up too much to get him + no guarantees & the idea of packing someone like Long to get RGIII is INSANE .....trade a perennial pro-bowler arguably the best LT in the game which Leaves a HOLE in the Line so your new QB can get killed...um NO.
  • Don't tell anyone but with Philbin we may actually have a high scoring offense...shhhh.
  • Our D is solid and in the Top 10, I think retaining Bowles would not be a bad idea.
This is an argument of why I feel we can be contenders Now in 2012, not a pipe dream, but it all begins, and is only possible with, the HIRING of PHILBIN as our Head Coach.....nice job Ross ...you may have just brought back credibility and legitimacy to our proud franchise!

I wouldnt say contenders...

and I am by no means sold that Flynn is a Franchise/Championship caliber QB. I would much rather get RGIII. Once RGIII learns Philbin’s offense, he would be scary. Plus, getting RGIII wont cost Long, just picks…

I don't get it

people aren’t sold on Flynn because he only played in two NFL games (which he did really well in both) but they are completely sold on RGIII because last time I checked he has played 0 NFL games. Don’t get me wrong I like RGIII and would be stoked if we got him in the draft but I wouldn’t trade a host of good picks just to find out if he’s legit, Luck on the hand I’d do the trade in a minute.

by kermit the frogger29 on Jan 21, 2012 3:46 PM EST up reply actions

im not saying I am completely sold on RGIII...

but i think Flynn may have been a product of the great situation he was in. And when I look at RGIII, I literally see every tool (both on and off the field) I would want in a Franchise QB/Face of the Franchise. He has a great arm, world class speed, was extreemly accurate in college, and is a great kid. Obviously, I dont know him personally, but, from afar, he seems like the kind of person who will work through adversity and find a way to be great. Really the only thing I see wrong with him is he may be an inch or two under prototypical size, but I dont think that is reason for concern…

The potenial problem I see with drafting RGIII

and missing out on Flynn, is Philbin would now have the task of installing his offense and having to bring two QB up to speed (Moore + Griffen) this would surely be a disadvantage to us in the beginning of the season and would probably take an additional year to get things running smoothly.

Now if we get Flynn we got a guy that has came up through this system knows it in and out and will be ready for week 1 no problem. Now we have the luxury of drafting a QB in the later rounds and taking our time bringing him up through the system just like Flynn did in Green Bay.

Essentially what I’m saying is Flynn would give us the greatest immediate sucess. It was telling today when Ross said in the press conference that Philbin gives us the best chance to win AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

by kermit the frogger29 on Jan 21, 2012 9:27 PM EST up reply actions

Flynn may give us the best chance to win asap...

but if Griffin pans out, he turns us into one of the premire franchises in the league, something they were also talking about today. Picking Flynn over Griffin just seems very short sighted IMO

one was a 7th round pick...

One is going to be the 2nd pick in the draft. When you look at raw talent, it is easy to see who has the higher ceiling, not because of where they were drafted either, but based on raw physical talent. RG3 was almost an Olympic hurdler.

We had [Brady] down… but we didn’t kick him. We helped him up and gave him a PowerPuff Girls band-aid for his knee. What exactly did you expect would happen when we did that?

by Jason Scott_90 on Jan 22, 2012 9:12 AM EST up reply actions

And Willie Gault did make the Olympics.

What did it do for him? He was a career #2 or #3 receiver.

D?

I think that everyone is going to be very shocked at how bad our D is going to be next year. There wern’t to many more additions to our D after Nolan arrived, and we were pretty terrable before he got here. Our Defense isn’t to talented except for a few players, the rest were outcomes of a great scheme. The abscence of Nolan is going to be a bigger void then a lot of people realize.

by phins4day on Jan 21, 2012 11:06 AM EST reply actions

I agree that losing Nolan hurts team continuity, BUT

I would contest that it was the D that started very slow this year. How many times did we watch the D struggle and lose the game at the end, it was hold your breath and grab the oh-shit handle. Where was the pass rush?

Nolan tends to gravitate towards D’s that were characteristically bad when he comes on board, so it looks good when he improves them.

Denvers D did pretty well this year w/o Nolan, we’ll survive and still young with many good players as a foundation.

by FinFinatic on Jan 21, 2012 11:46 AM EST up reply actions

Agree ^^^

The way I see it if your offense can generate 30+ points a game, you can get by with an average defense, just look at New England.

John Clayton reported in November that Bowles had become more involved in play-calling.

Got the info from sources. Miami’s D was playing better though before that point and I think the biggest turnaround was Vontae Davis returning the to lineup.

after nolan arrived we had two straight almost-entirely D drafts! and huge D FA additions. we took linebackers, olb, got wake

dansby, odrick, misi, jones, burnett, carroll….the guy from tulsa that didn’t work out in the middle, retrieved w. allen, and on and on.
not disagreeing necessarily w/ your analysis, but hard to say we didn’t focus on d after nolan arrived.

Yes but this current config has been around for 2 years. Ireland is now the lone holdover from

the whole Parcells mess. You can even say that the current config has been around about two days if you take in to account that the entire coaching staff is about to get an overhaul.

You have two choices, sit back and continue to bitch about the mistakes of the past or look at the positives in the moves that are being made in the present. I for one can not be so negative all the time and besides sports should be a form of entertainment, a get away from day to day not something to add to your daily stress.

it is all about money, he ownes the the team to make money, however you cant get people in the seats is all that matters.

Fluff if that what you want to call it, selling parts to share holders is something a lot of teams do, Pats, Jets, Giants and Steelers to name a few. Having side shows to get people in the seats when your team is not performing well is a smart thing to do. He will address the team needs, I am sure his hands were tied up abit with the past off season and also with B.P. around and giving T.S. enough rope to hang himself with.

Also for example a huge celebrity fan of the Rangers, Charlie Pride is now a minority owner brought in by Nolan.

You can only coach with the cards (players) you're dealt with.

Bowles has been highly respected for several years. While I agree the secondary hasn’t overachieved, he can still be successful as a DC based on his philosophies, his relationship with the players, his work ethic, etc. From everything I’ve heard and read about him, the players absolutely love Bowles and many front offices have a high amount of respect for him. He must be doing something right if he has that much respect from players and front offices. If Miami wanted to go with someone with more experience like Del Rio, I’d be fine with that. But I respect the opinions of the various front offices where I’d be willing to give Bowles a chance.

I believe he means he was perceived as brilliant at the time of his hiring

He had been the OC of the Chargers, who were by far the best offensive team in the league

The SD offense was pretty good when he was there

Larger point: being a great coordinator doesn’t necessarily mean being a great HC. See: Cameron, Wade Phillips, Norv Turner, Chan Gailey, etc…

But sometimes it works out

in order for us to be "contenders"

we have to wait until March when free agency begins, see what we do there and how that positions us for April’s Draft… While I feel like “contender” is a stretch, in Harbaugh and Sparano’s first seasons they did make the playoffs and I feel like the Dolphins team has many pieces to the puzzle to be a playoff team, but it really depends on the quarterback—- in which ours is mediocre… and mediocrity doesn’t consistently make us a contender.

Philbin needs to bring in a QB (preferably RGIII in the draft, and address our line in free agency), then we can see about being a contender

Need to win now!!!

The Phins need to win now.Getting an offencive minded head coach is the right choice in my opinion.Philbin is the guy.I think they will pursue Flynn as the starter and keep Moore.Flynn and Moore have proven themselves in my opinion.Flynn is still young. The Phins need to sure up other spots in the draft, particularly WR,LB,TE…etc.I like Clay.He has big upside. The Phins will be good next season if all goes well in free agency and the draft. But I think Flynn is the key to success.

Rite you are, he has spacific information so that the coach will not haft to go into maticulas effert & training & we as a team will be that much futher ahead of where we were last year!

So i’m so into us saveing all the studs that it wood cost us to move up & get a Rookie, but it still hasn’t happened yet as the Seattle team has the GM from GB. What conscerns me more is the Washington team will Open there wallets & splash like fisher (i never did like him) will end up in different colors!

I'm not opposed to trading back depending who is on the board.

There are plenty of players we could use in the mid-first round and if Miami can’t land RG3 and Philbin doesn’t make a run for Flynn, we have 2 first round picks for 2013 to make a run at a top QB. I wouldn’t be disappointed with someone like Upshaw, Barron, Perry, Kirkpatrick, Jenkins, Dennard, or even Allen later in the first and then have 2 first rounders next year.

Tell me this doesn't get you excited

Quoting an interview with Joe Philbin about the aggressiveness of his offense:

“We’re going to strive to be a balanced offensive attack. Doesn’t mean 50 percent of our yards are coming from the run game, and 50 percent from the pass game. We want to be balanced from a run-pass ratio, a formation ratio, a personnel ratio. We want to be multiple formation, multiple motion, multiple personnel (team),” he said.

“We want to take advantage of what the defense gives us. We want to be a take what they give us team. If they are going to be playing bump and press, we’ll take some shots on them. If they are playing off and soft we’ll work underneath. We’re going to be a sound, all purpose team that runs clean plays.”

Hey one thing for sure is that Philbin is very smart and he will bring in someone smart to run our O, I like what he is saying.

and one other thing , Bush is NOT a every down back, he finished the year hurt. He can not handle it, he is way to small. I hope Philbin sees that.

I'm the only one who isn't feeling good about this?

I mean really. Bring in another “good” coordinator who never coached before. We all know how that usually works out for us. Not to mention that he just lost a son. Quite a bit of baggage. I just feel like he’s gonna mess around with this team, bring in a bunch of guys that won’t work out, and be out within two years. He’s gonna set this team back another 4 years.

How it usually works out for us?

You mean the whole one time we’ve tried it? And his son passing isn’t really baggage. That’s rather insensitive to even categorize it like that.

We tried it three times

Sparano, Wanny, and Cameron. All were assistants and then got HC job in MIA.

Every coach was a coordinator at one time. Both the good and the bad ones.

I know, I just would rather have some on proven (Marty Shottenheimer)

But I do like Philibin best out of all the coordinators. It was a solid hire.

Sparano was never a coordinator and Wanny was also a HC previously.

Ok so add that to another category that failed and make it 2 for coordinators. Though Don Shula was Coordinator too...

So position coaches failed (Sparano), college coaches failed (Saban), coordinators failed (Cameron), and previous HCs failed (Wanny). Let’s not hire anyone from these categories. Will that make you happier?
